Back in Pai, Thailand: How Much Has Changed?

  • It's the grand finale of my epic Mae Hong Son loop adventure!. Today's the day I conquer over 800km of scenic twists and turns, rolling into the bohemian haven of Pai in Northern Thailand. After 4 days of gripping motorcycle madness, I finally park my wheels at my Pai hotel for a well-deserved breather.
Quick change, and I hit the streets of Pai like a local on a mission! It's been a whole year since I last graced this town, and let me tell you, things have changed. But hey, change is good, right? First stop, the legendary Two Huts Cafe - a spot where the vibes are as chilled as the beers. I grab a cold one and soak in the jaw-dropping views, reminiscing on the wild ride that brought me here.
As the sun sets, we dive headfirst into the electric energy of the Pai Night Market. Prepare your taste buds for a journey as we navigate the bustling streets, eating some amazing Thai street food along the way.
The morning after, it's time to rev the engine one last time for the final leg back to Chiang Mai. The Mae Hong Son loop has thrown challenges my way, but nothing beats the thrill of conquering it. Pulling into Chiang Mai, I grab a seat, reflecting on the highs, the lows, and the sheer happiness of completing this legendary loop.

Brilliant adventure Wayne, it was a delight to come along with you! How and what you presented along with your personal insights I think was the perfect balance. Truly a must watch sires for anyone visiting northern Thailand, especially your recap at 22:40. What you say about having so much solitary time to think amidst formidable challenge that brings so much reward, is really what life is about isn't it?
Your riding tips were essential too. At 26:00 what you said about 'trancing-out' is something few mention or maybe even realize about what they are in when they are in it. Having worked for a master hypnotist/hypno-therpist how you described the trans-state everyone falls into when riding or driving described it very well, and if you take a moment, a break to set back and observe that trance state, you become more aware of your own mind and live in general, and discover that most of us go life, work, relationships, eating, entertainment pretty much everything in that video game tarns-state, and if you take a moment to observe it like you often share, it can bring some profound changes in understanding the world and one's self, and perhaps what I enjoy the most about coming along on your adventures.
When you mentioned about distraction of the big city and constant motion, and restlessness in moments of calm idleness, I thought about what Pascal said: “I perceive that all of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone”. Perhaps allowing ourselves a moments to set quietly away from distraction is what shows us most about what we need to see about our unseen self that keeps us seeking distraction, and what you mentioned about Pai being good for twenty somethings but uncomfortable for we older chaps who've been down the trance road long enough to relish our quiet time in reality?
Thank you for the inspiring and humbling time, much appreciated.

Wayne, you have hinted at this topic before, but I want to ask about this as possible vlog one day - The challenge of staying busy and engaged in Thailand and not falling into depression. The freedom and beauty of Thailand is so appealing, man, but my real worry is about the boredom and restlessness that can occur with the day to day life. I can sense this struggle in so many vloggers that I try and follow. How do you find balance? Appreciate your honesty and transparency, Wayne. Thanks for always allowing us to ride or waffle along with you.

    • @WalkAboutWayne

Such a great topic. People think living in Thailand is all a bed of roses, when it's not. It comes with all sorts of mental health problems and things can go down hill here fast!
As you mentioned, I have talked about this before, but I do have this topic written down for a future video mate. It's such a great topic, that a lot of people sweep under the carpet. Thailand life isn't all shiny and perfect.
Great comment buddy, I will be doing another video on this in the very near future.

Wayne im loving all your north thailand stuff. I tried to find a video on the rules of the road (highway code) to drive in Thailand but nothing much available. Would you have anything you have done along the lines of - how to ride a moped safely, traffic lights and strange anomalies a westerner wouldnt know, what cc of moped for the loop, what to wear on the Mae Hong Son loop and things you wish you had known before doing the loop. Is the western side of the loop worth doing as it doesnt look all that appealing town wise as I have never seen much on that side apart from waterfall stops.
I am curious to see what MHS is like and as you say it appears that most people pass through.
I loved Pai as I never felt isolated there as a single traveller, the live music was great and that techno club was a real surprise.
Its a nice place for the so called hippie vibe and backpackers galore so plenty of people to talk with even if the beers on the walking street were in some bars way over the top price wise.
I watched a band in the walking street and they were great and when I asked if they could play that thai regae song that goes doo doo do dooter tam they laughed and said no problem which made my day and being pissed I gave them a massive tip.
Live music in Thailand I think is just amazing and so underrated.

Best thing to do is fly from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son then hire a bike.

That would take away the whole point of doing the loop though. If I go back, I might look into a flight though.

I do like watching your blogs, but can you stop singing the littlest hobo song as it's getting really annoying now, I've even started turning your blogs off if you sing it. Please, not every blog.

    First time here.
I love to travel. My therapist is my motorcycle. Her name is Now-O-Shka Nowoshka. She is a silver and red accents Suzuki Hayabusa. I bought her in japan and went from Aomori down do Fukuoka. It took two months.
I now like in Thailand. And I want to do this tour as you have just accomplished. I have always been addicted to motorcycle's and travel. Living on room service is the best. No woman has been able to tame this side of me. This is my first love. My Buda named Nowoshka. I have walked away from some very sexy and extremely gorgeous ladies if they come between me and Nowoshka. Never to return. I have three in Chang mi. Who would no doubt recognize my Haybusa so I ride very cautiously through there. Next year I'm going to do a run from Bangkok to Koh Samui. In Bangkok I stay at the Château De Bangkok. It's my second home. Everyone knows me. So I can't get away with a lot. The girls at the front desk give me a hard time. But it's all good. Keep up the good works. Maybe I might start doing these kind of videos.
    James Ray Bond.

Brother I think we both are lucky. I'm sure many wish they could live as we do. And I think we're more happier. My Busa is my therapist. If you know what I mean.
