Kudos, well done & thank you guys for the electronics chats with Mr. Grimani! 👍
A quick story of thanks to Anthony if I may.....
Am spending a July 4th weekend watching / rewatching [clearly by my new comments relative to your publication date(s)] many of your various "series" vids w/ Anthony as I fabricate my custom spkr & line level cables for friends & clients which I still call a hobby but that is also so enjoyable & therapeutic. Started with your 3+ "Amp Chats" early before sunrise and am closing in on the end of the 3rd vid at lunch time; I often rewind & replay MANY segments simply to drive a subject/chapter home. =Nerd Fun while I work!
Having followed AG for decades & attended many seminars over two decades at CEDIA, an AES I believe, and some other events, I've been blessed to make a living in the higher-end custom HT market and corporate boardrooms & facilities WITH a 2ndary focus, always, on aesthetics of the media space / room with my AID interior & architecture friends.
I attribute some of my success & certainly career direction to Anthony going back to the early 2000s unbeknownst to him of course and so I wanted to share my history + send a brief note of thanks to AG and you Gene. 👏 ♥
    All the best.

Liked the 3 part series. Anthony mentioned certain KEF speakers as having pretty flat impedance over frequency. KEF 107's were measured by DB Keele in the Feb'88 Issue of Audio to have an impedance magnitude between 3.6-4.8ohms from 20Hz-20KHz.

    Great video.
Funny enough, when you talked about damping factor (I learned a lot), saying it was a spec not published anymore, I thought about Accuphase, which still publish it, with a lot more.
I think that it is a key take away: do not even consider a brand that does not publish those specs and measurements.

Cudos and thanks to Anthony Grimani. Besides AudioScienceReview, the best info on Audio anywhere. For info on amps, the best, bar none. What I still don't get is when it important to focus on volts when on watts. E.g., why is it S/N at 1W or 2.8 V, but not at 0.35A, which would be equivalent. Why not? And loudness = volts, but there is lots of talk about current (= amps) delivery. Why once focus on V/U, other times on A/I?

@21:00 Gene, please correct me if I'm wrong but it's my understanding that the port is at the bottom of the two peaks when measuring a loaded woofer in a ported box. It's not at the highest 1st peak.
I think Anthony is remembering that the unloaded subwoofer resonance is at the peak and there will always be a single peak. But once you take that subwoofer and put it into a box that is tuned to a certain frequency then the impedance of that loaded woofer will be the middle of the two peaks.
A really great way to verify this is to open WinISD, load any subwoofer in any port design and look at the Port tuning frequency and then look at the impedance graph.

What I want is a specification that describes the broadband hum/ hiss amps often pass through to speakers. So in other words, the noise floor of the amplifier as revealed by a standard high sensitivity driver, like 100db sensitivity. This would be functionally similar to the "self noise" rating of an active studio monitor, except using a standard sensitivity driver allows you to estimate how much noise you will hear through your speakers.

I was wondering if you could provide information or suggestions on an affordable upgrade to my power problem. I have th Focal 806 with matching center channel speaker and the 605 rear speakers. I am currently driving these speakers with my Onkyo Rz820 AVR so I know that power is not the best. Is adding a 5 Channel amp going to give me the great sound and separation to the channels or is it separates only that will achieve this?
And what affordable options for a 5 Channel amp?
Thanks in advance for your help 👍

Thank you so much for this video, it is really useful.
I have a question regarding the specs of some PA amps which offer a huge amount of power at a low price.
Some of these amps have a good S/N ratio (well over 90) and good damping factor (well over 50), but THD is usually "< 0.5 "
Could it still be used for a home hifi setup?

Great chat. I studied cognitive psychology and psychophysics in the early 80s and the information about the auditory nerves firing on the negative side of the waveform (rarefaction) is new to me. There is some great information here from people who have a profound amount of experience in their fields. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Gene, we love you but ease up on Don a little. Be a little more patient and don't cut off his mic. The dynamic between you three is entertaining. Just my two cents! Keep up the great work! Will you ever have Sean Olive on a chat? He too has vast experience (scientific and empirical), is old school and no nonsense. I'm sure you two would have some very interesting ideas to share. Maybe get Dr Floyd Toole on at the same time (if he's willing) and have a chat about the evolution of audio and how we got to where we are.

Ground lift isn't dangerous regardless how it's accomplished, because neutral is ground in your breaker panel. In other words, your green and white wire all go to the same point source, so when you lift the ground the only thing you are changing is the chassis ground or the input ground from chassis. All inputs should be isolated anymore so this never becomes an issue and on some equipment they are isolated.

Depends on the AVR. I have an Arcam AVR300 with a true 7 x 100wpc. It has a built in bi-amp setting for channels 6 & 7 to power the mains with 200wpc. However, many modern AVR’s don’t have equal power on all channels, unless it’s a high end one like Arcam or Anthem.

I see Crown amps in the thumbnail. If commercial theaters use Crown amps then why isn't as popular with Home Theater enthusiasts? Wouldn't you want to use what they use? I mean we've all been in these mega huge theaters and their sound is huge and with amazing clarity and crazy dynamic range.

You talk about noise on the crown amps If your listening to music at more 10 watts you will not notice the noise being ground hum or floor noise or fan noise the reason theatres use crown power amps or other pro amps is because like you mentioned power at a reasonable price in the old days I worked at a cinema and in the best theatre we used an old Ashley power amp and it sounded amazing dynamic and all of it’s good for the commercial realm it’s good for your home

Why is Don Dunn is so Anti-Crown? I would like to find anywhere on the web, that can explain to me "Why Crown amps are so bad. Especially the model XLS 2502 Class D amps. I am not a Crown fan boy, but, I never bash a particular brand unless for good reason. I have not heard a comprehensive reason from Don about his stance on Crown amps.

    • @DigitalDonAV
      @DigitalDonAV 3 года назад +1

I am not anti crown, I tried a couple of crown amps over the years on many high resolution speakers. I found them to be noisy and harsh sounding, however I used to feel this way about class D and my mind has changed. That being said, Harman is a great company and I am going to try out some of the newer crown amps...I am open minded. I am a "need to hear myself" kind of guy, I have tried many products over the years that people swore by, but found them to be wanting. One benefit of being in the business so long is the ability to actually jam out gear in my own home, take time and dig into them with ours of critical listing. If the new crown's are as good as many people say, I'll eat my words. :-)

Home Theater Systems is not audiophile and class D is good for it you never hear different, but if you listen to high resolution audiophile music with 24bit -144dB noise floor , I can tell you can NEVER GET IT WITH CLASS D, if you design DC/DC converter ( which is the same PWM controlling ) you will see how bad it with different load , CLASS D AMPLIFIER WILL BE NEVER AUDIOPHILE AMPLIFIER . but on the other hand they are good public amplifier when you need 10000 W for big stadium .

Sounds plausible to the uninitiated but what your stating is actually NOT factual. Many Class D amps today are SOTA and as good or better than the best linear amps.
