Nice thought Paul! Only Allah knows upon which Deen shakespeare died and would be raised. I remember the story of one revert by the name of Samuel. He said as a child, his mom a Christian would often take him to the library and get biblical story books to read to him and would sit him on her laps and would say to him, Sammy, Sammy remember your God is the God of Abraham and he worshipped one God alone. Subhanallah! That woman in the 50s in the US might have never heard of Islam the way most people do these days, if at all. Yet her fitrah was upon islamic monotheism. I am not a scholar or anything and only Allah knows but I would like to believe she died and would be raised as a Muslim insha'Allah. So if shakespeare held such beliefs, then we would positively hope he was a Muslim too.
My father also told me about Abraham, peace be upon him. I was also told about Abraham and the star, moon and sun. It is in Qur'an 6:75. I think it must have been Dad who told me. He was a hardworking English farmer about 4 miles from Lutterworth, who was kind to the animals.
Thanks bro Paul for introducing the broader concept of Islam/Muslim to your audience. As you may be aware, both Muslims and non-Muslims confine Islam to prophet Mohamed's(pbuh) mission with Muslims doing so inadvertently. Non-Muslims totally think so while Muslims know that all prophets and messengers before Mohamed(pbuh) were Muslims. Still when confronted about Islam, they only refer to prophet Mohamed's(pbuh) period instead of fending off with statements like Jesus(pbuh), Moses(pbuh), Abraham(pbuh) were Muslims. The first Muslims were Adam(pbuh) and Eve(Hawa-Gbph). Shakespeare may have had the "Fitra" or the natural inclination to God(Allah) but the only way to know whether he was a Muslim is to find out whether he associated partners with God(Allah) or not because it's the essence of Islam and being a Muslim- Submission ONLY to God(Allah) without associating partners with Him in worship(e.g. Trinity) or worshipping other deities- Zeus, Apollo, Jupiter, Osiris, Baal, Hanuman, Lat, Uzza, Manaat etc. Allah or God is The One(as in One in One) Trinitarian Christians mistakenly call "The Father of Jesus".
As always, excellent production, Paul. I remember studying Shakespeare's plays in secondary school and the Merchant of Venice was one of my favourite along with Macbeth. The portrayal of Shylock the Jew, as a usurious lender really struck me because, as a Muslim, I knew of the interdiction of usury. Anyhow, such is the popularity of Shakespeare's works that no one has been able to criticise him for his accurate depiction of the jewish lender. However, I doubt today that a western filmmaker would dare make a movie out of it.
"They produced a movie called 'Merchant of Venice" starring Al Pacino, in which they made an effort to dispel the negative image associated with the character."
Ending the blessed month of Ramadan with observatons about God's attribute of Mercy in Shakespeare''s work similar to islamic content is interesting. The natural disposition 'fitrah' can bring people to such understandings. As God is Almighty and fair in His judgement and He takes into consideration the circumstances, the exposure access to knowledge etc,, - for being a pure monotheist he could be considered muslim..Allah knows best.
What do you mean by "this," Omar Alqrni? Is it the fact that both The Merchant of Venice and the Qur'an mention mercy? Going back through my files, I see a couple of my own mentions of mercy. Do you suppose that makes me a Muslim? How desperate can Muslims become, anyway?
I remember my English teacher reading this story when i was in elementary school. The story was compressed in our book but my teacher, who like me is a muslim, still emphasised the fact that mercy is a quality shared by man and God both. Years later i came to know about the fact that "God created the man in his likeness", which made me all the more fascinated about the coincidence. It'd be really interesting to discuss this with my long seen teacher.
…”God created the man in his likeness”…this is not an Islamic line. Quran says there is none like Him. 112:4. It is the Bible that says God created man in his own image. 1:27

@@waseemsstudy9140 What is meant, according to the scholars, is that Allaah created Adam with the ability to hear and see, and to speak when he wants. Sufism is not from Islam. My dear friend, never be a prey to the trap of so called Sufism, Tasawwuf or Mysticism as its not from Islam. Its not proven from the Islamic way of life. May Allaah protect you me and all from all sorts of deviations, bid'aat and heresies. Aameen.
Sufism is the way of Ihsan, majority of the Islamic scholars were sufis or had such connections, majority of Islamic warriors were sufis such as Malik Nurudin, Salahaldean Ayubi, Shaykh Shamil, Shaykh Omar Mukhtar, Shaykh Othman Dan Fodio, Shaykh Abdalqadir Jazairi, Mohammad Ahmad Mahdi, the Ottomans etc. Shaykh ibn Teimiya and IbnulQayim Jawziyya and also ibn Rajab ( big alem in the same lineage). Sufis spread Islam throughout the Balkans, Africa, Indonesia etc. Sufism is taught as science in Islamic universities world wide. Sufism was a target of petro Islam, because it was right and some people wrongly think they can extinguish the light. Sufism is also about loving the Prophet pbuh and his noble family an important Amana that the Prophet pbuh left us and which is nowadays widely forgotten outside of the sufi circles. Sufism is the heart ❤ of Islam and it is attacked by the heartless and envious.
The heck is Sufism?! There are no other sects of Islam but Muslim. No Wahhabi, Salafi, Sufi, Sunni, Shia, no. By claiming you are any of these sects is going against the Lord’s words.
Alhamdulillah! May Allah continue to bless you with courage, dear Brother Paul. It seems there is no academic proof of Shakespeare's contact with Muslims or withThe Qur'an, but there were times when he had potential access to a Latin " translation" of the Qur'an, and he had had to study Latin from 5 years old in Stratford. Additionally, there were Muslims in London in his time.
What's interesting? That Shakespeare might have had access to a Latin translation of the Qur'ān? That, according to Denise Wan, 1) he'd had to study Latin from the age of 5 and 2) Muslims were in London during his time?

The history behind this story is very interesting, Venice was the first place in Europe that Jews established a community, it is also where usury was first introduced to Christians who viewed it as a sin until then, from there it infected the whole of Europe.
The "merchant of venice" also contains an interesting part about music. Act V Scene 1 The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stategems, and spoils. The motions of his spirit are dull as night, And his affections dark as Erebus. A summary reads like this: "Lorenzo gives a passionate speech on the power of music. Lorenzo is very fond of music and says that night time and quietness is the ideal situation to listen to music. He asks Jessica to admire the beauty of the night, the grandeur of the stars, suggesting that even the smallest twinkling star looks like it is singing musically to Angels. He decries humans' incapability to be ‘harmonious', like the ‘immortal beings. While he is talking, the musicians arrive. Apparently, Jessica is not very fond of music. Lorenzo tries to explain the power of music to Jessica. Even the most savage, unruly and brutal herd of animals are silenced by music and says that Jessica is not able to love music as her spirits are attentive. He also cites the example of how Orpheus, a musician in Greek myth, could even make the stones and rivers listen to his music. *Music has the power to change man's nature into good. A person who does not appreciate music is untrustworthy, treasonous and has evil purposes.* He makes a reference to the Greek god of darkness, Erebus, explaining that *a person without music has intentions as dark as Erebus* He impassionedly cautions Jessica to *never ever trust this kind of a person with no love for music.* What was Muhammad's stance on music?
Well the answer to the question firstly needs a definition of what you mean by ‘music’? If you mean melodious reciting of verses then the Prophet peace be upon him was really moved by it. But if you mean nightclubing and similar typre of music then He was strictly against it… if you are curious to learn more on the stance of the Islamic Sacred Law then I would recommend reading Imam Gazali’s accord on this matter. May God Almighty’s peace be with you…
Or an even better Idea is to listen to the lecture ‘Music in the Islamic Tradition’ - Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad. It would be great of you to consider it…
@@klajdixhambazi9338 My definition of music doesn't matter much. Shakespeares definition of music is what matters for the argument. He integrated various traditional english folk songs into his plays, performed by singers and instrumentalists. Often entertaining, joyful ones. Those songs are based on form, harmony, melody and rhythm. In short: it was music as it is widely defined by almost every culture in history. Shakespeares music is clearly the kind of music that muhammed hated so much. The mentioned "melodious reciting of verses" usually has no instruments, harmony, rhythm or melody. Thats why even islamic scholars do not consider it to be music.
@@grnzrn As a general rule, like most things, good music is good and ugly music is ugly. Today's pop stuff is mos def ugly. Simple. One can be aesthetic while other repulsive.

Interesting thought. What also comes to thought is that Mercy is also a strong attribute in Judaism. And considering the fact that Shylock has been presented as quiet a dislikable character, is it also possible that Shakespeare has picked it up from the Judaic script to portray that Shylock, a Jew and an usurer, who is not a follower of the script and hence lot a likable person. By doing that, Shakespeare can also absolve himself from the anti sematic position if any. Just a thought.
@@madyasiwi Agreed. Error in my statement. I know, Judaic scripture allows usury. Thanks for pointing that out. Remembering Shylock's famous saying, "I'm a Jew. Have a Jew no eyes?"

On the contrary, Shakespeare likely had interacted with Muslims in London, particularly in and around the court of Queen Elizabeth I. She was courting favour, vassalage actually, with two powerful Muslim monarchs during her reign: the Ottoman Sultan, Murad III, and from the Moroccan Saadi regal line, Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur. The latter had sent as his envoy, one AbdulWahid al-Annuri, to reside in London for a time. Annuri's surviving portrait is the oldest one painted of a Muslim in England. As for the Ottomans, Elizabeth I repeatedly offered to make England a subject of the Constantinople-based Islamic realm. In her letters to the sultans, she emphasised the relative monotheism of the Protestants compared to the idolatry of the Catholics. The first complete English Quran translation was completed in 1649, but partial translations were around earlier of course. Imported Muslim products, food stuffs and fabrics were much sought after amongst Elizabethans. And, of course, with Othello, Shakespeare had a nominal Muslim as his lead.

Yes. After prophet Muhammad, the therm of Muslim is referring to syahadat.

@@waseemsstudy9140 they both say similar lines, but Christians use it to defend the blasphemy that God is a man or looks like a man.

Muslim (2612) narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When any one of fights his brother, let him avoid the face, for Allaah created Adam in His image.”
@@CraigTheBrute-tf6hx thanks for the reference. I recall having heard it as a kid. It meant that since every person has somewhat uniquely God designed face, hitting on the face is like tempering God’s creation. other body parts are also designed by God but when looking at face one is reminded of God, he would stop fighting.
@@waseemsstudy9140 What is meant, according to the scholars, is that Allaah created Adam with the ability to hear and see, and to speak when he wants. These are also attributes of Allaah, for He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, and He speaks when He wants, and He has a Face, may He be glorified and exalted.
But it does not mean that there is any resemblance or likeness. Rather the image of Allaah is different from that of created beings. What is meant is that He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, and He speaks when He wants, and He created Adam also able to hear and see, with a face and hands and feet. But man’s hearing is not like Allaah’s hearing, his seeing is not like Allaah’s seeing, his speaking is not like Allaah’s speaking. Rather Allaah has attributes that befit His majesty and might, and man has attributes that befit him, attributes that are finite and imperfect, whereas the attributes of Allaah are perfect, with no shortcomings, infinite and without end.

After God has guided you, would you still seek the path of transgressors

The history behind this story is very interesting, Venice was the first place in Europe that Jews established a community, it is also where usury was first introduced to Christians who viewed it as a sin until then, from there it infected the whole of Europe.
Supposedly he took a ton of inspiration from the Muslim World

The "merchant of venice" also contains an interesting part about music.
Act V Scene 1
The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stategems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
A summary reads like this:
"Lorenzo gives a passionate speech on the power of music.
A person who does not appreciate music is untrustworthy, treasonous and has evil purposes.*
He makes a reference to the Greek god of darkness, Erebus, explaining that *a person without music has intentions as dark as Erebus*
He impassionedly cautions Jessica to *never ever trust this kind of a person with no love for music.*
What was Muhammad's stance on music?
Well that is not the case, there is a difference of opinion amongst Islamic Scholars regarding the question of instruments. The actual Shaykh of the most authoritative knowledge institution in the world ,the Az’her University, has issued a fatwa which considers music as permissible.

I threw it in the garbage with pleasure (even before reading the bad part about Muhammad pubh) .. but your original post provoked in me the internal debate of reading vs. browsing etc..I have that thought always. I only read novels when I was learning a language to make the process more fun, but find internet more specific. Here is an example, I debate with many people about spirituality , Islam, Christianity etc.. and once I wanted to know the original name of Yahweh (which I had feeling it was from Arabic, Ya hay "O living one" just a guess, would you go and buy a book for that? on internet I quickly found an article in torahcom which says it is very possible it is from Arabic but they gave different words as the origin of the word, an article of maybe 3 pages.
here, "yhwh-the-original-arabic-meaning-of-the-name.. "
I notice that reading little article here and there give you much more advantage to be well rounded, and make reading much more fun and less dry, yet for specialized knoweldge books are better and more efficient. what do you think?
If you are in Dawah and read his other videos you will see many many good points and arguments, that save you huge time to read through all these book, still it is not the same as reading them yourself but the time saving is huge if one know where to look for on the net. feel free to refute, add, discuss, have a nice day. I always think that he may have highlight the parts he like in a book because I myself do that, so I can find it easy when I want to re read it, instead re reading the whole book again which I would not do. I think many uses highlight, write on the margin, or notebook. I sometimes write it down in notebook if it is short info, (mainly if it is on the net , some may copy and paste, if it is some info from the net)..
It's came to my mind when was reading Hamlet. Particularly the dialog with ghost.
"Doom'd for a certain term to walk the night, And for the day confined to fast in fires, Till the foul crimes done in my days of nature Are burnt and purged away. But that I am forbid To tell the secrets of my prison-house, I could a tale unfold whose lightest word Would harrow up thy soul, freeze thy young blood, Make thy two eyes, like stars, start from their spheres,
Thy knotted and combined locks to part And each particular hair to stand on end, Like quills upon the fretful porpentine,
But this eternal blazon must not beTo ears of flesh and blood."

There is also an article "Shakespeare and Sufism" by great Martin Lings.
