  • In this video we take a look at the Savotta Jääkäri rucksack. Made over in Finland and used by the Finnish Border Patrol, this is the 40-60 litre option from a choice of four sizes. I originally bought it as a large day pack and for multi day use, as the pack has the capacity to hold all the gear needed for both short and longer trips. The build quality is excellent and the pack is very comfortable to wear. It is not cheap, but certainly worth a look if you are looking for a top quality, reliable rucksack. Thanks for watching..........

    Excellent pack, i ended up getting the size large jääkäri but found using the bottom zip to access kit a bit of a pain when fully loaded so moved it on and got the XL version which is much better for my needs, but Savotta is bombproof kit and very comfortable to when full of kit etc.

    Hi Mark,
    another great video full of good content. Thank you for doing a more in depth review on the Savotta Jääkäri rucksack. As I said before great looking rucksack, it certainly looks well made and up to the task in hand. Great use of the space it provides, putting the hydration bladder in the same pocket as the frame. All in all a nice looking, hard wearing, well made rucksack with plenty of options.
    Thanks for sharing Mark, have yourself a great weekend. Looking forward to your next video.

      Hi Paul, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, so far, so good with the pack. I was out the other day with it and I am finding it to be the most comfortable pack that I own. The only down side is the price. But once you have got over the shock, you have a pack that should last for years. I have been very lucky and a very kind gent has sent me a couple of external pouches for it. So that is giving me more options to carry extra gear on the outside of the pack :) I hope you have a great weekend too Paul :) All the best, Mark.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Rich, I hope you are having a nice weekend :) Yeah I think that is the idea of the battle belt. I suppose if you had a set of pouches on the outside of the pack you could take them off and fasten them to the belt. This would work well for water bottles, fire and first aid kits etc. It is a neat idea, like you say if you needed to move away from your main pack and just carry the essential items. I may look into buying a few of their pouches. Once I have got over the cost of the pack lol. Thanks again Rich. I hope you have a great week too :) All the best, Mark.

      Hi, thanks for sharing. Did you bought it? Can you help?
      -i can see that the interior stiched seams arent reinforced in the same way as the ones on the lid interior. ( Same way as the lid, belt and shoulder straps are finished at their perimeter) (No linning and uncovered inside sewing?)
      On their website you can see the fabric on that seams,that hold the MOLLE/PAL webbing to the backpack fabric too, its gettting loose fibers, like the fabric falling apart...
      Should we be concerned about this issue? i think, over time it will only getting worst. Only with normal use.
      -I can see that in some photos, the vertical stiching is at the outside , where it holds the MOLLE/PAL webbing, but in others the stiching is at the inside, making it less fragile.Rocks and friction will break the exterior stiching.Where should we expect to find them if we buy one?
      Is the interior stiching an upgrade of new modells?
      -It looks like the snow will stick to the padding fabric. ( Belt, shoulder straps, and back padding). Is that correct? Thats not the best solution for winter.
      -Does the belt transfer the weight in a good way? Could it work pulling a pulka/sled?
      I hope i explain myself .
      Thanks in advance.

      @@markbailey2981 Mark -- Really digging this pack in concept. Thoughts/philosophy on the medium vs. the large? Is the weight/bulk difference really so much that even if 99% of the time the pack's going to be used for day hikes -- and, much more rarely, a few 24-48-72 hour stints with my State Guard unit (and maybe as the once in a lifetime GHB in the event of the zombie apocalypse) -- one shouldn't opt for the larger pack even if all the capacity is rarely if ever used? BTW, I'm 5'8" or so and about 175 pounds (over 50 - got some fluff to work off). For longer backpacking trips, which I'm just starting to get into with my sons, I use a Zpacks Arc Haul. -- Cheers, Mike

      @@michaelkent2203 Hi Mike, I hope you are keeping well mate 👍. I was also looking at the medium pack before I bought the large, but I have a couple of packs around the 30ltr size. I was looking for something specifically to use for overnighters where I would have to carry a sleeping bag, cooking equipment etc. I could of got away with the medium pack if I had bought the side pockets as well, but I didn't want to run the chance of spending the money and still struggle from time to time. I have used the pack on a number of day hikes and because it can be rolled down it didn't feel too big or cumbersome. I suppose it depends what you usually carry on a day hike. If I was looking to buy one mainly for day hikes in the climate where I am, then I would of opted for the medium size. If I needed more capacity then I would add the side pockets. They are quite large when you see them close up. I hope this helps Mike. Take care buddy, all the best, Mark :)

    I'm struggling to make a decision between the large or medium version of the pack. This definitely looks like the pack I want, I just wish there was a 40-45 liter option so it could double as a nice little day hiking bag or allow for an overnight camping trip.

      @@Bobby_Rib I ended up getting the medium and it's actually bigger than I though, plus you can strap a lot of pouches or sleeping equipment to the outside to make more room. But I am a little bit astonished, that Savotta did not include a raincover. Maybe because of the material and the PU-coating, the Rucksack is water repellent enough to withstand a short rain shower?! I see that they sell them separately, but even most lower priced packs come with them nowadays. Hi Brian, I hope you are keeping well brother :) That's a tricky question!! I love the 5:11 for my everyday day pack, but the Savotta is for more longer trips. So it would be hard to compare them that way. But the materials that savotta have used seem more durable and the stitching is really good. The 5:11 packs are so well made that you can't really fault their packs either. Yeah the spring rains are here. There is a bit of blossom out on the trees and the new buds are starting. A few nice warm days and we will be into it. Typically it started to snow this morning, so that will nock things back a little no doubt :( Thanks as always Brian.... Take care :)

    Hello Mark. Thank you very much for mentioning your height. I find that missing from many reviews when a reviewer says "it fits well and is comfortable". Ideally we'd know your torso length, for that's what actually makes or breaks the fit, but that data might be a bit too intimate.

      Hi Kartofff, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. As packs go, I have been very happy so far. I am not the tallest of people, any shorter and it would have probably been too long in the back. There are some adjustments that can be made, but unlike some top end hiking packs that have fully adjustable back systems, this is done by taking the waist belt off and moving it to the position that suits :) Thanks again for taking the time, have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

      @@markbailey2981 Yeah we can see, when you show your profile, that it's pretty much perfect for you, which means it wouldn't be for me (tall guy with a back that needs some care). By "moving the waist belt", I suppose you mean making the choice between crushing the upper abdomen, or crushing upper thigh muscles. But please give an answer to this tiny hope that's left : am I wrong and do you actually mean the waist belt can be moved up and down along the frame a little ?

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад +1

      @@kartofff Hi Kartofff, the waist belt is fitted to the pack in the same way as the pouches are. It is connected with pals and MOLLE webbing, so it can be fully removed. They also make a few different choices of waist belt, so I suppose it was designed this way so that they can be removed and replaced by choice. But the way it is connected means there are couple of different height settings that the belt can be set at. I have it set for the shortest height, then the belt can be lowered again for a taller person. My friend uses one who is just over 6' and it fits him well. If you are unsure I would order one, try it around the home for a while (loaded up) and see how it feels. If it is the wrong size or too uncomfortable then send it back for a refund. I worked in an outdoors shop for a number of years and this was a common thing with people buying online. I will leave a link to Savotta's website. They have a few videos on there about fitting and sizing the pack. It is in Finnish, but I went off what I was watching. finn-savotta.fi/en/products/jaakari-l/ I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)

    Hi, nice review ,thanks for sharing. CAN ANYBODY HELP?

      Thanks Mark B. for answering , dont worry, just wondering if real users could share their opinion. At your video , when you show the aluminium frame, i can see that the interior side of the seams or stiches, that extra fabric, and it isnt reinforced as the ones of the interior of the lid for example..
      I asked Savotta , and it looks like thats the way theyre selling/producing the backpack. No seam or fabric end cut reinforcement on the inside. It would be a quality detail to have that solved as i think..
      The other thing, the Molle its sewed on the inside and on the outside on the newest modells as they say. For me its better to have on the inside to be more protected, as older modells use to have.They told me that it has on the inside and outside to reinforce the area...but really necessary?
      It would be nice to hear your opinion when possible. Are you happy with the backpack? any issues? Would you recommend the belt as a pulk pulling system on its own?
      Again, thanks for taking your time answering and sharing your experience, we apreciate.

      @@chemawatersa377 I am glad that you managed to speak to Savotta regarding the queries you had. In general I have been very happy with the pack. It is well thought out and with the extra features that you can buy, you can get it to suit you needs more. I love the roll top design. It means you don't have to make many adjustments to the pack regardless of the amount of gear you have packed. If anything I would of made the shoulder straps slight narrower in the fit. I am not the biggest of people, so it would of suited my build better, but this is just nit picking. As for using the belt for pulk pulling, it isn't something that I am familiar with doing. I know you can change the types of padding on the belt according to their website. But I would hate to say it would be a good option as I don't know. I'm sure it would be strong enough,. • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад

      Hi Alan, I have only seen the 90ltr on videos. It would be too large for me personally I'm not very big and I think it would drown me lol. I was looking at the Karrimor Sabre 75 which is a popular pack, but then I came across the Jaakari. They make a larger version of this. It is about 90ltrs. But the 40-60 is a good all round pack. If I'm going for a day in winter I can roll it down to the 40 ltr and if more gear is needed I can simply extend it. Plus it has webbing underneath to fasten gear like sleeping bags, and you can add pockets if you want to make it bigger. It isn't cheap. But you can tell how well made they are when you see them close up.

    • @AlanAlanAlanDave
      @AlanAlanAlanDave 4 года назад

      The cheap price (army surplus) and the ability to modify it by moving a few clips (ability to make it smaller) and adding zip on pouches making it up to 90Ltrs is the appeal for me over a new more expensive sack. It’s a difficult choice. Do you believe I’m going to end-up buying something then finding out it’s not quite right? Do you have any gear that is now redundant? Not asking for myself just interested.

      Hi Michael, I am from a place called Staffordshire. We tend to still use a lot of old English in the dialect. I once read that because the area used to be such a highly skilled area for pottery, that very few outsiders were needed and moved here. So a university did studies about the variants in the accents and speech, and it turned out that due to the lack of influence from the surrounding areas we still use a lot of words that were used hundreds of years ago. It is slowly going out now as a lot of the younger generation don't tend to talk with the local dialect anymore. I think we must be backwards lol. Have a great week, all thee best, Mark.

      Mark Bailey Fascinating. I hope we find a way to preserve your dialect and others that seem to be rapidly vanishing.
