I'm a bit late but it's so cool seeing a community less than 2 hours away from me address it's checkered past and try and learn from it. I just wish we could do this on a national level
Had to take some steps to amplify the audio, and thereafter it was eyeopening as usual. I have read his book Sundown Towns three times and this expands on even the content in that book. What a blessing to have someone as committed to the comminication of this ongoing, troubling and grave sin in America. Thank you, Mr. Loewen, for making this a part of your life's work.
I expect there will be more folks drawn here by Lovecraft Country. I've lived in Indiana all my life and had never heard about Sundown Towns or the concept of the American Nadir. Loewen needs more airtime and as some other commenters have said, the audio is pretty bad but understandable. Edit: if you increase the speed just a tad the audio comes together a little

I live in Illinois in a city surrounded by sundown towns by the way. And some people that live in this "international city" are sundown people too. Most people would ask me what it feels like to be surrounded... My answer is no different from any other time in my life that I was surrounded 🙏🏾💖🙋🏾♀️
I have so many questions...have you experienced any interactions with people who are from the sundown towns? Are they rude when u come across them? Do u have to deal with more racial bs? Did you know where to go & where not to go? Have you ever been to a sundown town? Have you heard of killings/assault from the sundown towns?
@@jenell6006 No, we don't hear about the murders of black people in sundown towns here. I find it funny that they had a BLM protest march this past Saturday. They really don't care, and I find it offensive that they pretend to even give a little bit of a shit about anybody here. They are good for cover-ups and forget-you-ever-saw its though... Just like the Black boy found as a strange fruit in the town in Indiana where Pete buttigege was mayor of
@@jenell6006 you've never heard the song "Strange Fruit" sung by a jazz singer back in the 1930's? Kanye West did a sample of the song as a single. It was a term used to define the Black people who were hung from trees. For instance, my Mama told me about a "strange fruit" tree in front of one of my brother's baby Mama's homes in Aurora Illinois. They used to hang people there in the 1920's and the tree was still standing in the 1990's. My Mama said she saw the spirits of the people hanging in that tree. That's a true story my mother told me. Also, a male acquaintance I made in this area told me about a *strange fruit* tree in this area of Central Illinois, on a road on the way into this town. It was the "White people friendly" way of them talking about lynchings to each other in front of their children...

Let's just say I won't be visiting any barns in the middle of the night any time soon. Cause from what my Mama tells me, there is a "group of men" here that go into barns and have animal sex orgies, where they be fucking animals. I can't corroborate that one. I do know that my oldest brother who past last year was caught in quite a few sundown towns where he would be calling my Mama and she said he would tell her he was running through a corn field. Surrounded by those out here too lol, and soybeans... I have a few other stories but they are *intimate* and I don't want to share those here. Illinois is full of soft and hard racist Whites with a lotta step and fetch it minorities who keep it holding together... That's about the lot of it as far as sundown towns around this city go. I was born here but not raised that way....but at the end of the day I’m a black woman, I’m never going to be looked at for who I truly am. So yea the strange fruit trees I’ve never heard of. Even studying slavery/Jim crow & etc I don’t even remember that term but then again so much has happened from the 1600s & now I’m sure I don’t remember all the terms. U definitely taught me something new today. And that’s crazy about ur brother running thru the fields that’s like some runaway slave shit smh. What was he doing in the sundown town during the day time anyways? And the bestiality I’m not surprised about at all...it’s crazy bc they’ll fuck animals but they don’t want to be around POC 🤦🏽♀️
