Bettas a quite intelligent. They recognize their owner and other people in their environment and can be taught tricks. A happy betta need an environment with enrichment and lots of plants to explore. A sick fish in quarantine needs to be treated the way his rescuer treated him…
So...most of her bettas died from some disease that spread like wildfire among her tanks a couple weeks ago, and this little guy and another Petsmart rescue were 2 of the victims. Exactly! We need to spread and help educate people! Amazing! I love knowing that there's other people in the world that have the heart to want to save even the tiniest little creature. How rewarding to see him transform into such a beauty
For anyone who might not know this, including her, he might not be lazy but. His fins just might be too heavy for him to keep swimming for long. It’s kind of the downside to getting long finned fish. The fins don’t stop growing, and after a certain point it just might make it took difficult for them to swim by weighing them down
Yeah, I prefer "plakat" Bettas, they have shorter fins and look closer to the wild fish domestic Bettas came from. They've always been more healthy and active in my opinion, probably cause they don't have to drag around half their body weight in fins. I hope the glofish modifications they did to the Betta (this fish is genetically modified to be 'pretty' :/ ) doesn't affect their health in the long term.
Out of curiosity, could you in theory trim the tips of long fins to give the fish some relief? Or is the fin too vascular to safely trim without risking pain or infection?
As someone who has had only fishes as pets for most of my life, I really appreciate this! I did the same and tried to save a few fish in my life as well. Thank you
love this! :D my first goldfish, shona, was a literal rescue. my mum was outside chatting to a neighbour, and she saw another neighbours cat strutting down the street, all proud of itself. she thought she saw something in it's mouth, so she ran over to see, and it dropped a goldfish in it's garden and ran off. so mum grabbed the fish, put it in her sun hat and ran into the house with it. we got it into a basin of water, and started swirling the water, to try and help get it into it's lungs. it was touch and go, we kept an eye on her all night. in the end we gave her a cap full of whisky in her water, and she perked right up. i had her for i think 5 years after that. she had almost no tail when i got her, most of her fins were shredded from the cats mouth, and half her scales were gone too. but she grew them all back and had a stunning tail and fins! we did try and find out where she'd come from, but no one seemed to know. to this day, no idea. she was a great fish :D
That is absolutely shocking as most of the rescue groups I've been in basically say if a cat got it, it's more humane to put the rabbit, bird, etc. down because of the bacteria in a cat's claws & mouth.

@@victoriaserna1495 clean water, the correct temperature, and a cycled filter usually do the trick. They're usually suffering from ammonia poisoning in the store.
@victoriaserna1495 'little bowl'? That could be the problem right there. A single betta needs at least a 5 gallon tank (ideally 10 gallons or larger) with heater, filtration, and a stable nitrogen cycle.
I just rescued a betta with my fiance the other day. He’s so small he could barely eat and his fins have mostly rotted off. We tried crushing pellets but they’re too big still. So I got him flakes and he eats those no problem. He’s dark red and white now but had almost no color when we got him. His fins are still in rough shape but he’s happy and we’re trying our best.
I don't know if it's available in your area, but adding a bit of methylene blue to the water can help his fins heal. We can get it in little bottles of liquid at the pharmacies where I live. If you can't find it there, you might try looking for it online in a preparation for aquarium use.

I also took a Betta home with me as a rescue about 4 months ago. His fins were so short and rotted away that I wasn't sure whether he might secretly be a female, the poor thing! He went from a lethargic, sad fish to a beautiful Halfmoon Betta! And he's got so much personality, it's insane! @@JustaKarenDiscoveredTheIntrnet that blue stuff is Ich X.
Same thing happened with me!! I bought a small sad pink fish and now have this majestic red thing that thinks he’s a member of royalty.
I bought one feeling bad it was in a tiny cup. It was so full of life it always followed my finger around the fishtank. Sadly, it got depressed once I started working and going to school full time and stopped wasting to eat. I decided not to buy anymore fish since I wouldn't be able to give it proper time like I used to.
@@yuria2175I’m glad you decided to stop owning fish because one became sad when you couldn’t pay attention. Fish are like any other animals and can enjoy spending time with their owner
This makes me so happy to see him rescued. It breaks my heart the conditions in which these fish are treated and sold.
Darn right.
IMO the worst is the conditions in which they're bred, there's extensive spread of illness
I wish the stores that sell them would be honest about their housing requirements, that they need ideally 10 gallons and up, a heater and filter. They sell them off as these "convenient desk decoration" pets that can live in a cup and require very little care, when that's just not true. They're not ornaments, they're quite intelligent little creatures with personality and deserve to be treated humanely.
@@EmEm78 I say 5 gallon minimum with heat and filter. If I get a hint that they're going to be using something less than 2.5 I usually refuse the sale
@@EmEm78 not true chain pet stores will not advertise that they can live in a cup. Where I work we recommend no smaller than 5 gal. We tell customers one thing and are forced to sell those cheap fish bowls. Very frustrating.

@WORLD OF FAMILY GUY why are you talking such bullshit to persons you don't know?
After watching a video of some scuba divers interacting with an angel fish like it was a dog - Every dive, the same fish would come over and swim around with them and show them stuff. Like a tour guide for the reef - Ever since I saw that video, I'm convinced fish are just like every other animal... they have thoughts and feelings, too.

Thank you Dodo and Emma for publicizing the abuse fish often go through in commercial pet stores and educating people about betta care through your cute videos!!!
Exactly!
We need to spread and help educate people! The more people realize the utterly disgusting misinformation that bettas or goldfish can be in a tank 5 gallons or less, or sell those horrible bowls the sooner people can put a stop to the abuse.
The fact it's common for fish owners not to have filters, heaters, or think goldfish or betta only live a few years is just so sad. With proper housing, care- it's shocking how many people don't realize a goldfish can live 20+ years.

The fins don’t stop growing, and after a certain point it just might make it took difficult for them to swim by weighing them down
Wow, I had no idea that was a thing. Selective breeding, I assume. Thanks for the info!
Their fins contain nerves and blood vessels, so you definitely do NOT want to trim their fins.

love this! :D
my first goldfish, shona, was a literal rescue.
my mum was outside chatting to a neighbour, and she saw another neighbours cat strutting down the street, all proud of itself. she thought she saw something in it's mouth, so she ran over to see, and it dropped a goldfish in it's garden and ran off. so mum grabbed the fish, put it in her sun hat and ran into the house with it. we got it into a basin of water, and started swirling the water, to try and help get it into it's lungs. it was touch and go, we kept an eye on her all night. in the end we gave her a cap full of whisky in her water, and she perked right up.
i had her for i think 5 years after that. she had almost no tail when i got her, most of her fins were shredded from the cats mouth, and half her scales were gone too. but she grew them all back and had a stunning tail and fins!
we did try and find out where she'd come from, but no one seemed to know. to this day, no idea.
she was a great fish :D
That is absolutely shocking as most of the rescue groups I've been in basically say if a cat got it, it's more humane to put the rabbit, bird, etc. down because of the bacteria in a cat's claws & mouth.
You gave a fish whisky to heal it? Like an old cartoon character?

Hi. How did you manage to save them? I put fish antibiotics in my dying bettas little bowl but no signs of him coming back
@@victoriaserna1495 clean water, the correct temperature, and a cycled filter usually do the trick. They're usually suffering from ammonia poisoning in the store.
@victoriaserna1495 'little bowl'? That could be the problem right there. A single betta needs at least a 5 gallon tank (ideally 10 gallons or larger) with heater, filtration, and a stable nitrogen cycle.
Wow, this woman did her homework, when it comes to parenting! Thanks for your efforts!!🎉
How can you not save that sweet face? ❤💞❣
I am glad the little guy a second chance. So amazing how he developed.
