We have sweet potatoes in Bangladesh, but ours aren’t purple. Again, there is a regular potato which has slight red coloration in them when you cut it. Is the sweet potato of ours same as the okinawans?

100% agree Jesse. I love the way you mix karate and food in all your videos. My teacher, Kiyoshi Yamazaki, taught me to change my diet to the Okinawan after age 50; so I did. I'm a vegetarian, and where I live (Thailand) we eat Japanese sweet potato (Satsumaimo さつまいも) that grows all over this region. I'm 71 now, and I've just resumed training after a hip replacement. Back to white belt, but the belt isn't important, the training is. Keep up your inspirational work. I've learned a huge amount from you. Thanks.

And as you should know, pork is amazingly rich in thiamine and niacine, substances that build our immune systems. It has the highest concentration of these substances compared to any red meat (wild boar the highest). It is also interesting to see that in the blue spots around the world people also are inclined to consume pork for meat. Thank you Jesse for your very nice programs!

I shocked my Okinawan hosts the first time we went out to eat after our first day of gasshuku. Almost everyone in my American group ordered Okinawa soba, but I ordered goya chanpuru. I didn’t have a problem digging in to a bowl of ashitibichi either. As a foreigner, if you’re eager and willing to be on good terms with your hosts, enjoying their “soul food” can take you far.

Excellent video. One thing I would suggest is that rather than the traditional three large meals, four of five smaller meals spread throughout the day would create the 80% effect. I would also add that for older people with arthritis (like me) sardines and pork are NOT recommended. For those with arthritis, consult a health information website for a list foods to exclude from your diet. However, 95% of what is in this video is VERY good advice. Everyone should take it as a starting point and modify as needed to suit your particular medical issues. Finally, let me say that I love the advice about turmeric and seaweed! I am 70 and still practicing karate.

The traditional Okinawa diet is low in calories and fat while high in carbs. It emphasizes vegetables and soy products alongside occasional and small amounts of noodles, rice, pork, and fish. Additionally, Okinawan culture treats food as medicine and utilizes many practices from traditional Chinese medicine. As such, the diet includes herbs and spices known for having health benefits, such as turmeric and mugwort... Okinawan lifestyle also emphasizes daily physical activity and mindful eating practices. Their unique diet and lifestyle are credited with giving them some of the longest lifespans on the planet.

I'm not a karateka yet but I consume all these foods on a regular basis. The only thing that irks is the soy or soy based products, I've read multiple credible studies that have shown that soy tends to bind your free testosterone. And as a male I would like as much of my testosterone free and abled to be utilized. All in all insightful video. 🤜🤛

The blue zone survey of the Okinawan diet was taken post ww2 after their livestock populations were decimated in the war. Their high health at the time of surveying was after a majority of their life eating pork. Also look into Takota koen on RUclips growing high omega 3 pork. It’s not as simple as “pork is bad” it’s more to do with the breed and the diet/ life of the pig. Ultimately it’s a soil health thing.

    A. Mackerel is awesome. If you buy it fresh, it needs to be eaten the same day or it goes bad. I usually can't find it fresh in British Columbia so I eat salmon, snapper, or pacific cod. Maybe Jesse can ship me a can of Surstromming :D. Buy an instapot/pressure cooker. I do this with various meats, but particularly the bones for collagen. As I understand it, the efficacy of powders is unproven.
    B. I've been bringing in sweet potato and yam into my diet, whole grains in small amounts also.
    C. I have been backing off most dairy, except yogurt (skyr!). I find my dairy intake is higher in winter.
    D. I have been increasing the amount of fruits and veg I eat significantly. Divide the plate in half for veggies, then one half into two quarters for meat and carbs.
    E. Eating until 80% full - admittedly a tough one. But I learned to live with a modicum of hunger once, I can do it again.
    F. Definitely no issue getting vitamins C and D, especially given how much of my vegetable intake is based on dark leafy greens.
    G. I have definitely cut back on alcohol.
    H. This is wear I really have to improve. Between working shift work and trying to write a book, I find myself struggling to fit in physical activity aside from cycling and walking. Cost is a big thing keeping me out of a martial art.
Thanks Jesse, you are awesome and inspiring.

Thanks for this video. I got into boxing and M.M.A. recently and I have been eating a lot better. However, this was good to see that I can continue to improve the way that I eat and treat my body. ✌️
