  • Today I walk in flooded Abingdon. The Streets in Abingdon have been affected by severe flooding. There are 27 flood warnings in place across Oxfordshire at the time.
    Abingdon , located in Oxfordshire, England, is a historic market town with a rich and diverse history.
    Abingdon-on-Thames, as it is officially known, has ancient origins dating back to the Iron Age. It was originally a river crossing and an important settlement for the local tribe.
    During the Roman era, Abingdon was a significant town named Abingdonium, boasting an important abbey and a prosperous trading center.
    The town grew in prominence during the medieval period, gaining a royal charter in the 14th century and becoming an influential market town.
    The market has been an integral part of Abingdon's history, serving as a hub for commerce and trade, with markets dating back centuries.
    Industrial Revolution: Abingdon played a role in the Industrial Revolution, witnessing growth in industries like brewing, milling, and the manufacture of cloth.
    Cultural Heritage: The town is home to several historic sites, including the remains of Abingdon Abbey, which was one of the wealthiest Benedictine monasteries in medieval England. Additionally, there are various landmarks like the County Hall Museum and the riverside walks along the Thames.

      I just found your channel a couple of weeks ago. This is my favorite walk so far, but I've loved them all. I don't know if it is just me, but when you pan across a scene fast, it is blurring and making me dizzy. I like to be able to see every picturesque detail. I am stuck living in a place where everything is modern and it all looks alike. I can only dream of living in a place with such character as the ones on your walks. Thank you.

      Hey meagie,
      First of all welcome to the channel. I couldn’t see any blurriness regarding the video. I will make sure when panning to go a bit slower thanks for your feedback. Thanks for watching much appreciated.

    Abingdon looks like a delightful town. Love the church and the other old buildings. So sad to see the flooding, no matter how small there is always damage and a lot of cleaning to do. Hope it subsides soon. Thank you Kevin for sharing. 🥰

    You probably should have extended that walk slightly to include the abbey ruins and the surviving buildings of the abbey (The Checker), which dates from the 13th century. Also, for those wanting to visit, a walk through the park beyond the ruins to Abingdon lock and across the river is very nice. You can then usually walk back down the river to the bridge where Kevin started the walk, except when it's flooded as shown here. It's a lovely circular walk especially when the weather is pleasant.

      @KevinTheCountryman  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey James, that was the plan at first but when I arrived there it was flooded so I had to cut the walk short unfortunately. Planning to go back in the summer to do the whole circular walk. Thanks for watching.

    • @James-dx8qb
      @James-dx8qb 8 месяцев назад

      Hi Dave. The abbey ruins and Checker could have been included with just an extra 4 or 5 minute walk, but I know this because I'm a local. I look forward to the whole circular walk when you do it. There's lot of nice walks within easy reach of Abingdon, but an especially good one is from Dorchester Abbey to the Wittenham Clumps via Day's lock. It's both beautiful and historic, takes about an hour I think. Highly recommended. :)@@KevinTheCountryman

    😢😢😱😓😢😰😨😥😟😮😦😱😓😨😰😥😟😮 let's weep rivers of tears of grief friends, trying to wake up people what on earth are we doing is still ...mission impossible 😢😢😢, learning to invert the global warming and live in good harmony with the environment...before we go washed to the sea for good...if people do not care, our planet why should she care? Seems a human specie exclusive, this arrogance vanity narcisism and selfishness, this cruelty beyond any decent limit and lack of understanding, yeah... help us Lord have mercy indeed, let's wake up people before it's too late. Scientific knowledge is average TV entertainment by now, everybody knows how climate change works and how to invert the global warming...once it was the excuse, TV networks can not afford themselves to be all over the places, well, now any single individual is holding a camera, everything is caught on video and web technologies raise them shootings public, nobody can say, they did not see what happens, wake up people before it's too late

    Боже, какая же красотища! Не устаю восхищаться этими милыми улочками, этим манящим светом в окнах, этими величественными арками домов и костёлов! А какая стихия воды! Какой мощный поток! Какая сила! Спасибо, Кевин, за романтику Ваших прекрасных видео! Люблю Англию с детства. Была всегда окружена английскими книгами. «Сагу о Форсайтах» Голсуорси перечитывала раз десять, наверное. Кстати, смотрела видео и поймала себя на том, что пью в данный момент кофе из чашки, купленной в Лондоне. Посчастливилось побывать там восемь лет назад. Всего Вам хорошего, Кевин! ❤🌲🎅🌲❤️

      Yes, there is a difference between a village and a town. I guess a village has more of a community feel and people are more comfortable saying hello to each other.
