I gotta give Jeff Fowler a bit of slack cause the guy did at least listen and knew he had no idea wth he was doing and looked elsewhere for help in the form of fricken Tyson Hesse. I dont mind the test footage look to be fair. Its def not bad but im guessing it changed due to early leaks more than anything else which is a bit of a shame but hey Sonic looks great now so i call this a win.
@@WarpingFist Hey! For one of your next videos, you should cover the various rejected Ranger and Zord designs for Dean Lionsgate’s 2017 Power Rangers reboot. They look very alien.
Looking back, Sonic's 2017/18 design could've worked as it still resembles the original character and it also looks like a more realistic iteration of the current design we now have. Alas, glad they changed it for the release of the final film
@@andrewd5139 Yes it would have. I actually like the 2017/2018 design it could've worked in my opinion. But if it came out in the 90s or 2000s would Jim Carey still be eggman or somebody else
This in my honest opinion was barely anything like Alvin and The Chipmunks. Hop, I agree, but Alvin and The Chipmunks I hardly could see it as. 😂. I always thought Fast and The Furious but with a Hedgehog 😂
The art evolution of Movie Sonic is like a Snicker ad in a nutshell: *Ugly Sonic:* UH, MEOW? *Tom Wachowski:* You're feeling a little too slow. Grab a Snicker! You're not you when you're hungry. Better? *Movie Sonic:* Better! GOTTA GO FAST!!!
According to the Russian Dub person who pictured the (Original Sonic Design Test Footage) he said that he actually "liked this design", describe as "cuter and chubier" but he "remember changing the design after the poster critical reaction in December 2018" I'm assuming they changed it around like January 2019 (before Ugly Sonic + the test screening and change the opening scene)
Since the Blue Core Studios fanfilm was mentioned, we gotta give a major shoutout to Project Shadow, the live-action fanfilm by JoaoFilipeSantiago that adapts extremely faithfully Shadow's origin in the style of the Paramount movies. It was so beautiful, so well-written, so well made that it got nominations and won awards for many film festivals, like the Toronto International Film Festival!
The 2017-18 design coulda came out in the 90s and it woulda been awesome. I liked that look honestly it was the right blend between realistic and cartoonish
This brings me a lot of nostalgia and memories from the hype of the sonic movie and am just happy that we have come this far for the sonic movie franchise good work as always WrapingFist👍💙💙
Honestly I think what bugged me the about the pre-redesign more than the uncanny realistic proportions was the lack of gloves and socks. Him just having those random red shoes and seeing that all over the marketing was so annoying
I genuinely want to see the whole movie in the old design just to see how it would look like. Or just the only scenes that were finished with the old design.
Original plans 1. TriStar Pictures was going to distribute 2. Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy, and Shadow were all supposed to appear, but they were cut due to budget constraints 3. Sonic was not gonna have shoes 4. The film was gonna be titled “The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog” 5. Sonic was gonna originally gonna be voiced by Veteran Sonic actor Roger Craig Smith 6. ASAP Rocky was gonna originally do Seuco The Childs verse of Speed Me Up, but dropped out due to budget reasons 7. The film was gonna be directed by Tim Miller, and written by Deadpool’s Rett Reese and Paul Wernick 8. The film was gonna be scored by Hans Zimmer, but he said he was done with Superhero related stuff, so he would eventually be replaced by Tom Holkenborg (AKA Junkie XL)
The weird thing is the original deisgn from the Chris Pratt poster looks good, but something about the test footage makes it look really bad to me. I think it's the blue hands, and the really long quils looking like realistic hair, and looking way too chunky. Final design is goated though obviously.
I never liked that early sonic design it made me think jesus the movie will suck but thank God they did fix it and everything after the fixed design was so much better
I hated that era for movies where everything had to be "realistic." I'd say around the 2000s to late 2019, we were getting movies that tried to take fictional or whimsical characters and put them in grounded backgrounds like the DCEU, Spider-Man, TMNT, and even Godzilla. But I think after studios began to see that not every character needed to be dark and realistic, movies now are beginning to embrace the campy charm of the original property and something more faithful to what fans were imagining a movie with that character to be like with color and style. Now we're getting a fantastical DCU, the Spider-Verse films, Mutant Mayhem, and the new Godzilla/Kong films.
Personally I still think a true live action Sonic is somewhere in between the two versions of his designs. More realistic proportions and eye size but having glives and his new shoes. Also just made somewhat shorter.
Actually, there's 3 old designs: the test one, the one from 03:55 (which it's totally different from the 1st trailer), and the 1st trailer one. The 2nd one can look similar to the trailer one, but it's not the same. There was 2 version of this 2nd design: one with blue hands and one with white hands

So rare for a studio or director to take fan complaints seriously. Yeah, at least fowler knew he messed up and did all he could to fix it.

The initial Sonic design in the early 17/18 concept art still looked FAR better than the design we saw in the first worldwide trailer 🤣
Funny how the Sonic movies went from a Alvin & The Chipmunks/Hop clone to something akin to Marvel

The final look is obviously the best but that test footage look was pretty decent. Weird that the ugly sonic look was so creepy.
Yeah, I thought the test footage design looked pretty good, but I know a lot of people don’t like it.
Thank God for the better Sonic redesign we've all asked for. 😇
Imagine if they kept the old one 😶
