Well, every teenage student of a music school is required to play a concerto by heart. That is a norm, nothing amazing about that. Amazing is his playing.
Le must du must... délicatesse et sensibilité rare... moment magique à vivre les yeux fermés ... il ne reste qu'à arrêter le temps... Merci pour ce moment de bonheur.. Michèle
Ma and du Pre play differently and beautifully. Please have more respect than this rivalry that hurts music. It is not meant to divide us but rather unite us.
I feel so frozen in time when listening to this concerto. Every movement has something so unique and intoxicating. This movement (and the end of the 4th) make me melt.
this is so very, very english. i thought du pre would always own this concerto, however this is something else. this musician is totally mesmerising, the performance is almost hypnotic. this is good, very good. thank you.
Ok, get it right, it's Cellist. Not celloist. But I admire your candor. I have been playing cello for about 11 years, but This man, my word, he is AMAZING!!!!!!! Him and Rostropovich are the worlds best cellists. This song is beautiful. Thank you for posing it.
He's so good... The feeling put into it is astounding. Every single note has feeling; none are more important than the rest. I personally play cello and, on any instrument, this feat is terribly difficult to master. Bravo, just bravo. It's terribly sad to think that people would rather listen to bands than this kind of music........
I've found that, for me at least, orchestras tend to have a more pin-point approach, that's why movie soundtracks are produced mostly with orchestras. Bands usually have a more blunt approach, either because that's how they do things or because they're experimental. I've learned to accept both.
Enix5548 , I guess we can call that MATURITY. He definitely symbolizes the pristine joys, 'beauty' and responsibility that accompany age. May we aspire to be like him.
@sutphoe I think I'll speak for most if not all musicians when I say this: you really don't seem to get it. True, music is vibrations of the air which our ears interpret as sound, but it's sooooo much more than that. Elgar had a message to convey; a message of sadness, joy, then once more sadness. If the audience is able to understand that just by listening, three things have happened:
This recording is definitely of better quality than Dupre's. 100% due to the fact that current recording technologies are far superior than those of the 1960's. With this in mind, I prefer Jackie's interpretation/performance despite the audio quality of the video.
yeah that's what i meant; any peculiarities just become part of his charisma. his memory was phenominal, he just lapsed occasionally. probably because of pressure/stress. excellent memory and great musicianship can be two seperate things, yes but it's very rare, i think a very central part of musical ability is the ability to mimic; mimicry is what one builds on, but the shape one gives to one's music comes from a type of love that has been the driving force of every great art work in history.
richter was such a strong player that i don't think it mattered whether he followed any rules. he played from the score because he had some memory lapses in concerts if you don't know. he had a very good memory indeed but i guess he had the type of mind that panics and drops things when under pressure. that comes with introspectiveness i think. i'm the same :-)
absolutey beautiful !!! watch his fingers watch the way he guides the bow and ... LISTEN then ... if you are still busy critizising his facial expressions - please switch the chanel.
This is going to sound hokey, but this piece really makes me want to cry or laugh or do something in response to the amazing music. It frustrates me every time that my body can't figure out exactly what it needs to do to channel the music.
1) Elgar did a tremendous job of writing this piece; 2) Barenboim did a hell of a job interpreting the piece in his own way so that the message is conveyed; and 3) YYM and the orchestra (but mostly YYM, because he does it on his own) read Barenboim's signals and in turn interpreted the piece beautifully.
I did cry, this mov. is so beautiful. I watched jacqueline du pre play this mov. and she was too fast imo, yo-yo ma takes different cello concertos and kinda slows them down taking in everything. That's why I like him, no homo.
At :33 you can hear the faintest mess up by him. That's the only time I've ever heard him mess up, and he moved his cello forth, so I'm guessing he was aware that messed up. Still amazing, I'm not a hater, I just didn't think it was possible for him to mess up lol.
People need to realize that if he wanted people to care what his face looked like while performing, he would have been an actor. He chose to be a musician. You are supposed to LISTEN to him. Don't judge him for anything unrelated to what his music SOUNDS like. That is all.
Onesockanda Song It was uploaded in 2007, old RUclips allowed to upload max 10 min. videos, so he couldnt split movements correctly; thats why 1st movement ends earlier that it should end
When I play cello, I find that having the cello lower puts it at a more convenient angle for string crossings. Maybe Yo-Yo is using this to his advantage. That or it's a coincedence. We may never know.
i think when it comes to string playing instruments, there is no "hardest" all string instruments are equally hard, but sometimes it is a little more difficult for different people. For example, if you are short it's a little MORE difficult for cello and bass players( not be stereotypical, it's just hard for meh) vibratto is always hard, no matter what string instrument, However, it's the different perspectives and personalities of people that decide which insturment is best suited for them =3.
I agree....but viola is tied with cello. I think both instruments are very beautiful and have a rich sound to them. I can't decide which one I like better. I play viola fyi.
Who is brainwashed? You call me brainwashed because I don't believe what you believe. I believe there is a greater reason in the universe than myself, that there is a greater power than we frail human beings and that we are not just victims of chance. I am not oppressed by my beliefs but liberated.
Noah Byrd this is and old comment, but who's gives a crap about clapping between movements. If people enjoy the music they should express it. It's why other people don't go to these concerts, they always get scalded by people like you. If they want to clap, let them clap. Don't judge
@YourDailyLaughz I really wouldn't call that a mess up... More like a noisy string change... I suppose at a performance of this caliber it could be considered a mess up but you have to get the bow from one string to another somehow :D
@sutphoe vibrations are the rhythmic transfer of energy along with all things that we experience. Since energy is transferred through space and matter in various wave lengths thus rhythm, all things acquire this rhythm as a ripple effect. this rhythmic transfer of energy along with gravity and all other laws of time and space pull things together and create objects of order, and beauty. this song along with his others are wonderful examples of our rhythmic minds harmonizing with that of the music
see thats funny, i played violin, then switched to cello and it was quite an easy transition granted i did develop some bad habits from the violin but ultimately fixed them when i started lessons in college. granted im a sophomore but none-the-less
yeah thats right LegionMCR, but just to tell you I've been trying to learn cello and it's easy but still has it's challenges because of fingering differences...violin is a lot easier cuz of position fingerings, etc, but I'd have to say that cello is a lot better---i can't stand the high notes on a violin. So yeah DrBananaCampbell, you can pretty much play cello and then viola or vice versa and the violin with viola...probably not as well to switch to cello after violin. It's a bigger diff. :D
Sure he has amazing inborn talent, but that is useless without developing technical skills, which takes serious devotion. Cello has been his life since he was a little kid. You have to devote your life to it fi you want to be that good!
I was feeling pretty down but after listening to this music and watching Yo-yo Ma I feel better, it's amazing how God makes good music so healing
It is not god. It is humans.
Marvelously brilliant. Yo-Yo Ma plays with such energy one is 'charged' and always enthralled by his performances.
Bar lines melt away. How can one eliminate the beat so completely and replace it with an endless belcanto line. Unbelievable.
incredible he does this whole concerto without any sheet music in front of him. amazing
Well, every teenage student of a music school is required to play a concerto by heart. That is a norm, nothing amazing about that. Amazing is his playing.
I am in tears❤ what an incredibly beautiful performance and composition
Le must du must... délicatesse et sensibilité rare... moment magique à vivre les yeux fermés ... il ne reste qu'à arrêter le temps...
Merci pour ce moment de bonheur.. Michèle
Thank God for giving humanity the mental capability to create such beautiful music and instruments.
I've never cried listening to a song, until now. This was absolutely heart breaking.
I think this is the first time i've truly felt i understand and appreciate a piece of classical music, simply superb.
Yo-Yo Ma....A Giant of our time... The Elgar Cello concerto is a marvellous one!!
Ma and du Pre play differently and beautifully. Please have more respect than this rivalry that hurts music. It is not meant to divide us but rather unite us.
A Smith RUclips comment sections fortunately don’t represent the majority of the classical music community.
Sol Gabetta & Simon Rattle is another worthwhile interp, on youtube. She plays the slow mvt much fleeter.
I feel so frozen in time when listening to this concerto. Every movement has something so unique and intoxicating. This movement (and the end of the 4th) make me melt.
True.
I love this piece way too much! It's such an emotional piece!!
this is so very, very english. i thought du pre would always own this concerto, however this is something else. this musician is totally mesmerising, the performance is almost hypnotic. this is good, very good. thank you.
The key change at 3:55 might be the most skillful key change ever. I love everything about this concerto!
Not a key change but still an ingenious bit of composing
This is the most beautifully spoken piece of music I have ever heard
Barenboim y Yo Yo Ma... Maravillosos!!!! Un placer escucharlos !!!!! ♥
@PChanmisao That's one reason I love seeing kids hear/see music like this. Their visceral reactions are just absolutely priceless.
Several bands have their merits, and so does Yo Yo Ma. They difference is the emotions each want to pass on to their listeners.
I love to listen to this to help me sleep.
cello is the best instrument. period.
Sitting here listening to all the movements, it amazes me when one ends. I do not notice the 10(ish) minutes go by.
He's so good... The feeling put into it is astounding. Every single note has feeling; none are more important than the rest. I personally play cello and, on any instrument, this feat is terribly difficult to master. Bravo, just bravo. It's terribly sad to think that people would rather listen to bands than this kind of music........
Appreciate how each one feels and plays.
We musicians must memorize whatever pieces we are playing.
Yo Yo Ma truly owns this piece. More than DuPre, although that isn't saying she is bad.
dasd282 she is better than you think the quality makes it sound worse but I kind of agree
both great musicians
the cello is meant for Elgar.
both Yo Yo and Jacqueline played the same cello on the same piece
they are the best candidates for this piece.
that adagio is so beautiful
ikr I was listening to this in class and I almost cried
The opening of this movement is epic.
Look, I can't make you believe that God works all around us and through us. I just stated what I believe. God bless you and have a great day.
@PChanmisao that is the beauty of good music.
I've found that, for me at least, orchestras tend to have a more pin-point approach, that's why movie soundtracks are produced mostly with orchestras. Bands usually have a more blunt approach, either because that's how they do things or because they're experimental. I've learned to accept both.
wow, his tone and overall sound is so rich... honestly i think this recording is better than dupre's
this is amazing.
Enix5548 ,
I guess we can call that MATURITY. He definitely symbolizes the pristine joys, 'beauty' and responsibility that accompany age. May we aspire to be like him.
i love yo yo ma's passion when he plays!
@sutphoe I think I'll speak for most if not all musicians when I say this: you really don't seem to get it. True, music is vibrations of the air which our ears interpret as sound, but it's sooooo much more than that. Elgar had a message to convey; a message of sadness, joy, then once more sadness. If the audience is able to understand that just by listening, three things have happened:
beautiful movement...had a recording with Pierre Fournier...he played it beautifully, too...long time ago...
This recording is definitely of better quality than Dupre's. 100% due to the fact that current recording technologies are far superior than those of the 1960's. With this in mind, I prefer Jackie's interpretation/performance despite the audio quality of the video.

It sounds very much like Jacqueline Du Prés version. Incredibly beautiful.
not to mention conducted by Barenboin, he was meant for this too
Increible, es el mejor!!!
richter was such a strong player that i don't think it mattered whether he followed any rules. he played from the score because he had some memory lapses in concerts if you don't know. he had a very good memory indeed but i guess he had the type of mind that panics and drops things when under pressure. that comes with introspectiveness i think. i'm the same :-)
Yes, music is just sound in the elementary level, but when 'deliver' in the right way, it can resonate the human soul.
Outstanding
absolutey beautiful !!!
watch his fingers
watch the way he guides the bow
and ... LISTEN
then ... if you are still busy critizising his facial expressions - please switch the chanel.
how can anyone dislike this?
bravo, bravo, a thousand times bravo
This is going to sound hokey, but this piece really makes me want to cry or laugh or do something in response to the amazing music. It frustrates me every time that my body can't figure out exactly what it needs to do to channel the music.
Mother: Son, you should learn to jump-rope.
Son: Well, you should yo-yo, ma.
1) Elgar did a tremendous job of writing this piece; 2) Barenboim did a hell of a job interpreting the piece in his own way so that the message is conveyed; and 3) YYM and the orchestra (but mostly YYM, because he does it on his own) read Barenboim's signals and in turn interpreted the piece beautifully.
magnifi!!!!!!!!!!
Yoyo ma for the win! Cellists all the way!
I did cry, this mov. is so beautiful. I watched jacqueline du pre play this mov. and she was too fast imo, yo-yo ma takes different cello concertos and kinda slows them down taking in everything. That's why I like him, no homo.
excelente..........

Very impressive

why are the movements split incorrectly?
I noticed this too.... kind of irritating
dasd282 Very much so.
Onesockanda Song It was uploaded in 2007, old RUclips allowed to upload max 10 min. videos, so he couldnt split movements correctly; thats why 1st movement ends earlier that it should end
tru..
Kapsek1 This isn’t true though. The video with the first movement actually contains part of the second movement as well.
I wish I had a cello!
When I play cello, I find that having the cello lower puts it at a more convenient angle for string crossings. Maybe Yo-Yo is using this to his advantage. That or it's a coincedence. We may never know.
no one can do better.
Wow what's the evidence? When's he coming? I'm free Monday!
Yes, we should enjoy the music here, I don't mean to come across hostile either. Have a good one.
@sutphoe I have yet to meet such a musician.
@lostpebble Yes! Well said.
i think when it comes to string playing instruments, there is no "hardest" all string instruments are equally hard, but sometimes it is a little more difficult for different people. Hes an incredible musician. This music is amazing! Those who cannot appreciate it should just go elsewhere.
@PChanmisao
i like to channel it through work. it calms my mind and helps me focus
I love when he starts to get out of his seat at 6:10 =')
@AlkaloidsAreFun I honestly think they just missed the like button.
I agree....but viola is tied with cello. I think both instruments are very beautiful and have a rich sound to them. I can't decide which one I like better. I play viola fyi.

I like this audience. They're sophisticated enough to know not to clap between movements.
Noah Byrd this is and old comment, but who's gives a crap about clapping between movements. If people enjoy the music they should express it. It's why other people don't go to these concerts, they always get scalded by people like you. If they want to clap, let them clap. Don't judge
I don't understand music but I hate that TBH. How can one not clap and cheer after the second movement?
@YourDailyLaughz
I really wouldn't call that a mess up... More like a noisy string change... I suppose at a performance of this caliber it could be considered a mess up but you have to get the bow from one string to another somehow :D
oh my yo-yo ma looks like he is going to pass out from constipation.
@sutphoe vibrations are the rhythmic transfer of energy along with all things that we experience. see thats funny, i played violin, then switched to cello and it was quite an easy transition granted i did develop some bad habits from the violin but ultimately fixed them when i started lessons in college. granted im a sophomore but none-the-less
i harmonize with my voice
Daniel Barenboim :)
yeah thats right LegionMCR, but just to tell you I've been trying to learn cello and it's easy but still has it's challenges because of fingering differences...violin is a lot easier cuz of position fingerings, etc, but I'd have to say that cello is a lot better---i can't stand the high notes on a violin. @Boxoz you just did if you watched it.
play the fuck out of that cello, yo-yo!
He is best cellist with Mischa Maisky.
At 1:49 gets me every time...
when was the last time you felt that way??/ what was the piece called??
@PChanmisao Play the cello :D
why is this so sad!?
That's the way Elgar wrote it. :-) Wait 'til the next part.
dorfler strad you can blame the people who didn't accept Elgar and his music
Because Elgars wife had died, I hear.

no matter u look at the score or not u hav to memorize the music.
otherwise u are sight reading LOL
你说的对,这也是为什么我喜欢他的原因之一
@ByronPhillipWilliams its fun
By the same argument it is unconscionable to compare Rubenstein with Horowitz or Arrau.
Jacqueline du Pre è insuperabile!
Actually, he's using Du Pre's Strad in this Concerto
Nope, this is his Montagnana
Sure he has amazing inborn talent, but that is useless without developing technical skills, which takes serious devotion.
Cello has been his life since he was a little kid. You have to devote your life to it fi you want to be that good!
cool

@omnimage446 Thanktyou!- I agree this person is not correct at al. (I am cellist)
