I am gob smacked by the technology that has evolved in off-shore oil and gas exploration and development. It rivals the space program, I think. To be able to drill wells without having any deck hands during normal operations is amazing. But the more people needed to do the work, the more expensive the product will be. Crew have to be rotated on and off the rig, which can mean long helicopter flights or boat rides. And everything has to be done remotely underwater, as no divers can go below 100 meters without very special equipment. So remotely-operated vehicles which can withstand enormous pressure have to be used.

Its quite scary to see how far we can think of such ships

How cool, for how long have you been working on the Noth Sea? Asking as a Dane who consider to take a Bachelor in Technology Management and Marine Engineering and go offshore to the drilling rigs.

Hello, I was wondering where the water enters the platoon and How does it remove the water in an equitable manner, avoiding one side from having a heavier weight? Some vertical legs will have a center pipe linking one another, I'm presuming to keep the same weight?

There are multiple ballast tanks in each pontoon that can be individually flooded or de-ballasted. Computers help to control the stability of the rig. Often, pumps are used for moving water from tank to outside, while opening a valve will allow tank flooding. As fuel is used up, ballast must be taken on to keep the rig stable. When supplies are loaded, de-ballasting must occur. The rig is ballasted to ride low in the water when on station, which reduces the effect of waves. When moving from site to site, the rig is de-ballasted to where the pontoons are awash or riding with free board.

It's called an "equalizer" where ballast is pumped to maintain itself plumb.

You could've provided real pictures of that rig, not animations! Lazy work!

I worked the oilfield for 20 yrs. I've explored seismic, drilled, workover, wireline (.030, stranded, conducted for logging), coiled tubing, rig welder, roughneck, derrickman, etc.
