I could NEVER imagine buying some wooden pencils for almost $200. I would just loose them all in 10 minutes…

Now THIS is how you turn something simple into a luxury product while also using leftover wood! Way to go Mr. Miyamoto! This is what the Louis Vuitton pencils should have looked like. I'm still flabbergasted about that trash by the way. :-|
Yeah, you'd be better off buying these pencils. You'd spend less and get a higher quality product.

Honestly I think even if an art supply is expensive, I feel like the overall design and vibe of them can inspire some sort of confidence and determination in your work, whether it's "these are expensive and I don't want to waste them so I'll take as much time as I need on this piece using these expensive materials" or "the aesthetic of these are one-of-a-kind and working with them is a privilege," etc. Or even role playing some extravagant fine artist using expensive supplies that eases anxiety through the process.
Concur.
I have artist anxiety so if my tools are too expensive i will just put off using them forever because I’m afraid ill waste them or ruin them 😭
It's like how Stradivariuses aren't genuinely the best things ever in terms of material and construction these days, but the history alone makes them stand far above the rest giving players more of a mental boost than if they just used modern top of the line violins.
I would use them when drawing like a cafe, or warm colored drawings since it gives the vibes
Excellent point. No pun intended.
They still are a work of art in itself 😊 I worked with a scientist who’s specialty was wood identification. This is a one of a kind treasure to enjoy and I can bet these pencils don’t lose their smell. My favorite part was the case of birds eye maple and if you ever seen a piece of furniture made from it is like the shiny way you showed us the pencil case❤️❤️ thanks for your dedication to get these pencils.
Lacewood is one of my favorites!

Aww, I really wish these were colored pencils and the colors would match the tones of the wood.
That would be awesome.
That's a really good ideea
Now you are giving Mr Shigeki ideas.
Damnnn that would be so cool
That's what I hoped too.
You going "smell this pencil!" reminded me so much of my woodwork professor at university who came up to us while we were doing stuff in his workshop, picked up a handful of sawdust off the floor and went "smell it!" to us every day xD He was a great guy. Also I like to imagine that Shegeki Miyamoto watches your video and goes "finally someone who can appreciate a good piece of wood!"
ruclips.net/video/KhxXSykVvLY/видео.html🤗🤗
As someone who LOVES loves the smell of different types of wood I think just the fact that they're pure wood and you can smell it makes me wanna buy them ♥️
ruclips.net/video/KhxXSykVvLY/видео.html🤗🤗🙏
Japanese Cypress (Hinoki) is a very expensive wood that is known for its amazing smell. You can buy blocks of it to put in the bath to make your bath smell nice, but I’ve never had that kind of cash 😂
Indian sandalwood from Mysore is even more expensive, and the fragrance when the wood is ground with water, is heavenly.
Hinoki is also awesome for kitchen cutting boards.
When things are actually of quality I don’t mind dropping a lot of money on things. I’m not shocked since Japan is the same country that has fruit growing down to an exact art form
Japan has some of the finest art supplies besides Europe. They did make back in the 80 some very nice school supplies which were sold in Europe in the gift shops. It was not only cute but also functional. Yes what a contrast. Japan with high end school and art supplies and then there is China with all the low quality plastic junk runining the earth with one-way unrefillable and non recicable supplies.
@@ladyinblack3398 Several major companies moved their factories to China decades ago to save money. Then when China got rich, because they were now a major supplier for the entire First World, these same companies turned to others in Asia, hunting for more cheap labor to exploit. China is at fault for a lot of the damage, but they aren't the only culprit. It's a global chain of indifference. Also, not every company in Japan produces their own goods... many of them still outsource to China, so Japan isn't entirely guilt free.
I don't mind paying for quality, but arguably, this is 99% paying for presentation.
In what way is the end result going to differ from say, a set of Faber-Castell pencils? It's still graphite at the end of the day. Most of the gushing over them is to do with the wood that confines the lead.
If that's your thing then it's perfect, but for me personally, I wouldn't consider these paying for quality in terms of an art product, but it is paying for quality in terms of presentation. It's there to look pretty.
@@Grigeral Thanks.
Japan remains the only place I have ever been able to buy an apple approximately the size of my head (in Aomori). To top that off, not only was it not of a woody texture, it was very delicious. ☺️
As a fragrance enthusiast it was so cool to hear the difference between aroma on these different type of woods.
ruclips.net/video/KhxXSykVvLY/видео.html🤗🤗🙏
i literally bought these, drew one thing with them that was sketchy and nature based, and then put them in a shadow box and they now sit beautifully on a shelf under a light in my room. they're my biggest bragging right 💀
ruclips.net/video/KhxXSykVvLY/видео.html🤗🤗🙏
Sounds to me like none of the sellers -- regardless of what they said -- actually had the pencils in stock. Sounds to me like they were all waiting to get an order, then ordering from whatever the higher-up source was, and were all finding out that it was out of stock or way backordered or whatever.
I suppose it makes sense that a smaller seller wouldn't tie up whatever the wholesale price is on a set of $150 pencils. Having that, and other similar $$$ items just lying around can put you out of business unless you have a *lot* of capital lying around, which isn't economically smart for a small retailer. But it's still annoying that they'd be all, "Oh, yeah, I totally have this!" and take your money when they don't have it and turns out they can't get it. :/
ETA: I'm massively impressed by the intense *black* you were able to get in the background of the drawing you did. Most graphite can't get that black. Maybe it's an artifact of the video, but it looks damned impressive from here.
it’s called drop shipping
@@Jacqueline888 no its fraud lol. in etsy read to ship items are different from made to order or drop shipping

So, 10 pencils at $154 gives you $15.4 per pencil. Apparently they are 17.4cm, 88 cents per cm.
After breaking the tip of all my pencils I find that, on average, sharpening them to point will shave 0.7cm off the pencil
That means (88 cents/cm)*(0.7cm), and each sharpening costs 61 cents.
Merely sharpening the 10 pencils costed Rae $6.16
And judging the lenght of the pencil at 16:41... Well...
Too much mAtHs

Hey guys!! I’m a woodworker and I couldn’t help but geek out about the pencils 🥺👉👈
I can’t afford the pencils but if I could I would get them simply bc they seem cool. And yes, wood has its own distinctive smell…I remember when I first started woodworking the whole “wood has smell” was soo cool. Like there is one wood that smells like lemon 🤯…but there is also one that smells terrible lol. My favorite wood atm to build with is walnut but cherry and maple are good options too!! Love your art/content and can’t wait for the next video!! 🥰
that’s awesome! i love the smell of wood, but never thought about different kinds smelling different. in my schools workshop that i went in last week for the first time, i was so excited about the sawdust everywhere that i may have accidentally inhaled some.. but that’s besides the point! im pretty sure our school uses oak, and my garage has oak in it ( probably the reason i love the smell of garages too… )
One day you might be able to buy or make some like these. :)
Time to take wood shop as an elective
Some woods have more resin or essential oils too. But I don't think resin or essential oil woods are better for pencil making, it needs more research to conclude it.
Loved watching your genuine excitement upon smelling the wood of the pencils as you sharpened each of them.
lmao whenever i watch her videos ( which is most of the time ) , i feel like im learning art history and having fun like it’s so entertaining and fun !

When I worked in a U.K. art school (no names) I never had to buy a pencil in 20 years... at the end of each year literally hundreds of pencils were just abandoned and swept up ... used to keep a box full for general use in the studio. It’s my theory that all the missing socks in the world turn into abandoned pencils...
Me buying dollar tree pencils: throwing them, constantly sharpening them, giving them away.
Me buying those pencils: still keeps them in the packageing to not destroy them!
I ADORE these kind of videos.
Personally, I used to prefer everything that was mass produced because of how perfect it is. But then I learned to value hand made stuff. Yes, they´re not perfect but that´s precisely what makes them unique.
PS
Who else here thinks Rae won´t EVER be using these pencils again? And she shouldn´t.
why shouldn’t she?-
cuz they’re like an art piece
@@ochako8322 Because of what others have said not to mention how expensive they were.
This is the type thing you buy if you're a collector/ admirer of the artist because they aren't pencils for function, they're art. The hamburger at my school were oddly good for being these slightly unnerving shades of brownish grey sometimes. There's something about some of the food you could get in school that was both delicious and unnerving at the same time. I guess I hold the few good food I could get at school very close as more often than not I wouldn't eat lunch at school since I was ( and still kind of am ) a picky eater.

I love this so much! I have always been fascinated with Japan as a Country and as a society. The creativity, practicality and ingenuity of Japanese products are unrivaled, imo. When it comes to Japanese products - across the board - the packaging and the products themselves always amaze me because of those little details that make things so much better. Even ice cream from vending machines in Japan have amazing features as part of the packaging. I can go on and on about that, lol. But yeah, the little divot (or whatever) in the piece of wood to help get the pencils out is the perfect example of Japanese ingenuity.

If you end up loving the whole experience, Caran d'Ache puts out special sets of pencils every year or so, each made from a different kind of wood. The sets are also perfumed by a perfume house in France, with each set having its own unique fragrance. Best part is that they're not $15+ a pencil -- the sets of six are about $40-ish, which is still super expensive, but you don't get the polished wood box to go with them, so...there's that. I've had one of the sets (5? 6 maybe?) for a couple years and the scent's still there, even. (Plus, it's Caran d'Ache, and they know how to make a good lead.)
edited to add: On a whim, I just checked Amazon, and the Les Maisons sets are there -- the most recent three, at least -- and range between 27 and 32 USD. They did go to just four pencils per container, though. And one of the new ones has a couple of the same woods as this set. :)

This is making me nostalgic.

I guess the first pencil was rosewood, rosewood is known for having a distinct floral note(like that of a rose). So yes, it is pretty distinguishable.
