    My only disappointment with the early Metallica albums is that the producer didn't have the bass loud enough. This is amazing stuff! Cliff rocked!

      I know this conversation is old, but White Fright, I absolutely agree lol. Ric's look and they are cool. But 'most' Rics couldn't get any further from versatile if it tried. Now some of their more modern basses, like the Cheyenne are a tad more versatile. But at that point, it is no longer the "Classic Rickenbacker" that soooo many people want. Until they attempt setting it up, more specifically that dumb two piece bridge. 😐

    Not a mistake. Shoot, listen to Orion Bass Track Only. There is a part where he is keeping time with the bass and has a harmonized solo overdubbed, just like a guitarist. 99 percent of the people who listened to that song think it is guitar for sure.It is just him getting out of the traditional bassist zone

    using a pick doent mean you are better or worse than finger plucking. It's a completly different sound, and you use whichever fits the sound you want. I use both, depending on if I want a cleaner, more pure sound, or a more hollow, deeper, melodic sound. No better or worse, just different.

    Question.
    This is probably gonna sound extremely dumb, but at 4:18 (and throughout Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) for that matter), how does Cliff get that growl on the bass?
    I know there's some form of distortion or fuzz in the mix (I'm not a total idiot), but would there be some Auto Q or Wah involved?
    Much appreciated.

    @powersheep8 theres nothing wrong with playing bass with a pick. Its just another style, and gives you a different sound. this probably one of the reasons I have a hard time talking to fellow bass players, because way too many have the same ignorant attitude about that you do that the only "right" way to play is with fingers. And for the record, I play with my fingers and Steve Harris is one of my fav bass players but some of my other favs play with a pick.

  • @ripperplaysclon152
    @ripperplaysclon152 3 года назад

    This tone is kinda weird for bass in metal. It’s probably because of three things:
    1. Cliff hadn’t changed his damn strings in ages
    2. It’s very midrange-y, and the low end is muffled a lot.
    3. It’s a Rickenbacker bass.
    4. Or all of the above. Which it is.

    • @NGC6144
      @NGC6144 3 года назад

      This sounds like it was taken direct from the mixing board or recorded that way with no amp which is a common studio recording technique but the sound that way has no balls and tone. I think this allows a greater play in adjusting levels later in mixing. It's not the Ric. Any bass will sound as dead. The Ric has a much lower midrange than say a P-bass.

    @darkragnarok21 I have a big muff, but sadly no wah wah, so i can't quite do what cliff's bass did. I'm not sure exactly what he used, but i can get it pretty close with mine, so he very well may have used said pedal.

  • @jaybirdk74

    Since we're doing the whole pick versus fingers thing here, I'll take the bait...
    As a bass player, I use fingers 85% of the time. But I find that the Misfits are tough to play without a pick. Same with Tool. And for the record, Jonesy tracked quite a few Zeppelin songs with a pick, for punch and clarity (it also made his 8-string bass come ALIVE! ).
    Besides, many bassists started out as guitarists. So why not pickstyle? Many of Cliff's bass heroes used one, right?

  • @NESportsandACDCfan
    @NESportsandACDCfan 13 лет назад

    @powersheep8 Had a fellow bass player been talking with Cliff Burton and said he used a pick Cliff would have said,
    "Cool man. I personally prefer my fingers but it's however you want to play your bass."

  • @triplehood
    @triplehood 13 лет назад

    Well I think that everyone should decide for theirselves if they want to play the bass with their fingers or the pick. I personally prefer fingers but not because it sounds better, I prefer fingers so that I can throw in a slap bass once in a while. If the sound was the only thing that mattered then I would go for the pick, most riffs sound more powerful with a pick.
