This was super helpful, thank you guys. It would be really great if chapters were added to the video, so we could find and skip to the topic we needed. Thanks again!
very very true.... you have to change this as the service progresses purely because of the amount of people attending the church service.. not just about how people are playing :)
I think one thing that people struggle with is the band not playing together and not being able to identify where the issue is the band and where it's their mixing skills. Identifying that is a skill in itself. What to do from there, especially in a live situation, is a lifelong process. I'm glad such a focus on gainstage and low end management during the presentation. Most people don't realize the importance. Like he was talking about masking, in the way that reducing competitive sounds so that they balance better is another key. When i mic monitors and someone has a loud mic and asks for more I will first listen ttyl see if another channel in their mix is just to loud rather than automatically turning up the channel they asked for. A small cut can be more noticing than a big boost.
A super cool event could be joining a church wanting to do a full system upgrade (acoustic treatment, drum enclosure, amps, soundboard, etc etc) and the live workshop becomes setting everything up for the church. Then you have a rotating panel of professionals coming in over three to four days teaching about why they chose what they did for the church. Talk about PA design, how to decide how much acoustic treatment, channel strip assignments, gear inventory management, so many possible topics…
This is Great stuff. I'm pretty new and knew some of the concepts. The Mastering part at the end will help me a lot. I can see where I've gone wrong in some of my past recordings.
Great video but I learn more by looking at what he is talking about. Meaning have a mixing board in front and go through what the vocab means for common folks trying to learn from the "beginning." Thanks.
@Henry Van Weeren 🤨 Not sure if you're trying to make a smart comment... It was just a request, not a demand, if they can't or don't want to do it, no problem...hence why I thanked them for the video regardless. They can just ignore my comment.
This just further confirmed that I have no idea what I am doing. lol I definitely took a lot of that information in, but I don't have the knowledge or expertise with our software to actually implement it.
Jake thank you for this great video. As a intermediate mixing engineer, something sticked out to me between Luke Hendrickson from Bethel and Jesse. Luke said he is a stereo guy, for him everything should be stereo. On the other hand Jesse is saying he likes mono because it helps him have more control of the source in terms of placement in the mix. Which approach should many of us beginners/intermediate take? Bethel mix sounds so good but so does Red Rock church with Jesse too.
Great video! This DAW thing for sound scaping just seems like overkill to me for live mix. Use for live tracks is cool as part of the performance. I want to try it though. Thank you.
It's so strange, the fixation these people have with making stuff look and sound cool. Like why do you need all this gear just to tell someone you love them?
5:09 "do this, do this, do this...but there's no explanation of WHY you do this" - THANK YOU!!! Tutorials/how-to's are not very helpful for any topic if you aren't explaning WHY.
Remembering last time i was arguing a singer who is used to DAW on a laptop, my point was, DAW laptop and digital console are completely the same, and the singer point is they different. Hahaha. Then I just shut up cause I already know. 😁😁😁
Before you can run, you have to walk. Before you walk, you have to crawl. While I appreciate the information, I wish the information was actionable. For example, getting a good monophonic mix is more important than jumping into a mastering a stereo mix. Understanding general EQ use-- positive as well as negative EQing and a hands on demo is more important than just theoreticals. Focusing on fundamentals such as the relative loudness of each channel (lead singer vs background singer), (lead instrument vs supporting instruments), (percussion loudness), etc. with demos -- would be 100% more effective than just talking about it. I would also suggest talking about analog vs digital consoles, dbx DriveRacks, Jensen transformer DIs, microphone recommendations, 2-way talkback system, hand signals of worship team to sound team, notifying the worship team when all channels are muted so guitar can be plugged/unplugged, etc. etc. I can easily think of two dozen (crawl) items that should've been discussed before talking about advanced panning, reverb and other (running) items. In short, fundamental mixing skills/tips are far more important than talking about advanced theoretical mixing.
I'm a volunteer for my church The new. Life Tabernacle in Shreveport LA. I have a strong desire for helping the praise and worship for God. If you could help me find a online in depth sound engineer course.
I mean plugins are definitely all NOT the same. Do you NEED a $2500 plugin vs a $25 plugin? Most definitely not, but one of the biggest reasons is the coloration and unique things certain circuits (and emulated circuits digitally) do things that are worth paying for in many cases. Also, something like the Slate infinity eq gives you way more bands than the stock logic plugin, but both do a great job. I get what you are saying for the purpose of this talk and don't disagree, but all EQ's are not created equal lol.
That was kind of his entire point. That for a live environment those things are not worth it. That for the things that you need an EQ to do in a live environment they are pretty much all the same. You shouldn't be using 20 bands. If you are using more than 3 or 4 there is a source problem. And as he said at the beginning you aren't paying for quality you are paying for options. In a live environment you don't want a ton of options. You want one thing that works very reliably. Live mixing is quick and dirty. You don't have months to dial things in perfectly. You have to do it right then and there and you only have a limited amount of brain space and time. Simplicity is much more important than perfection. Introducing fancy plugins greatly increases the likelihood of a crash and the likelihood that you will forget something.
1:22:51 That's crazy for a 25k Protools Rig. Meanwhile a 60$ Reaper session doesn't care if you are authorised or not, doesn't even force you to pay those 60$ after 60day trial period ends... Point being here - their greed force them to be so afraid of potential illegal uses that they even fail the paying customers. Funny to see everyone chasing "industry standards" and paying huge amounts for Ableton, ProTools, Logic when there are alternatives that often gets the same job done and sometimes even better.
Hello, do you have a recording like this in Spanish? I have to train people in my church in our Spanish service and need resources in Spanish for them. Thanks!
You should maybe not hold the mic that close to your mouth though. I understand you want to make sure it’s close enough to pick up your voice, but it’s also picking up your breathing and mouth noises when it’s too close
You can use any DAW. Logic Pro X is probably the easiest to pick up. Reaper is free. Garageband is free on Mac I'm pretty sure. Ableton Live is something I only really use for making music. You can mix with any DAW.
Hello. I have a question for you guys. What's the best way to get the mixer's audio to be as clean as possible? Because we're capturing audio with a Focusrite 2i4. Moreover, the audio appears to be severely compressed. (the mix is good) Do you think you can help us with our problem?😅
At 23 minutes he talks about bass and kick interference. SOOOOOOO. This validates an idea I have. 12 subs stacked six wide by two high. The top 6 subs are bass guitar only. The bottom 6 subs are kick drum only. Think about this idea.
Why do you guys need this stuff to worship your god? Serious question. Like if I just want to tell someone I love them, I may need my phone for that, but I shouldn't need to EQ my voice as I'm telling them that. Before you post a super complicated, long-winded reply that proves to me that there is some value to this stuff in a worship setting, read over what you write and ask, "What would Jesus say?"
I have had 6 ads for way shorter vids. It's getting worse. The ads in general are over kill, considering it never was like this before YT came out with a paid option, and they get rich anyway off others contents and data. It's very off putting, and just paying for premium should not be forced
The amount of time he walks out of the frame and the director crossfades the video is mind-numbing. I know its an audio class, but the lack of video skills is distracting.
Are you thinking overall shape? Are being really conservative? Are you being aggressive and changing settings as the music gets less intense throughout the set? Or do you purely soft knee low ratio as a leveler?
Sorry, that is no practicable Course, it is only Philosophie. It is no good teaching. You must make a Virtual Soundcheck, And mixing live, Make your Mixer on the screen. That the people can hear and see. The People must all Imagine in their Minds. It is not good, especially for Beginners, which ist the Group to you are speaking. You must illustrate all things.
Worship mixing is different from rock/pop/soul/hiphop mixing because...oh, wait, physics is just physics and these are not different AT ALL. So maybe STOP trying to pretend Christian audio in fealty to a conservative gun-toting anti-vaxing MAGA jeebuz is in some way different from Muslim audio, or Buddhist audio, or ancient Greek god audio (though I have it on reliable account that Poseidon _did_ require a specifc model of Allen & Heath SQ series mixer along with early model Distressors, but I digress...).

Thank you for doing the Lord’s work of making these video markers 🙏🏼
I know all this, but in my church the acoustic is so horrible, so I have more to fight against feedbacks.
I love how Jesse illustrated the mixing process using the stage. That visual will stick with me always!
Thanks to Jesse and to the Churchfront team! It helps me a lot. From Philippines 😊
this guy's great at explaining these concepts
This is a phenomenal explanation of mixing. I love how he breaks all the concepts down in such an easy to understand way.
Probably the best explanation of the physics of audio mixing I've ever heard. Great lecture! Saved and downloaded for replay later.
same here
masterful
Thank you so much, form Uganda, this is helpful
Iam sharing this video with my team here at church thank you
This was super helpful, thank you guys.

Loved the way you took your time explaining all the concepts. Thank you.
This type of video is Amazing Jake more more of these pweese😊😊😊😊😊. Listening from Kenya
Massive input and impact. Really enjoyed it. Quite knowledgeable speaker! God bless you for sharing some of these with your RUclips audience.
Thank you for that precious and so valuable video. God bless u all.
This was an incredibly useful lecture for those of us that can’t do a quick production course at a community college.
I feel attacked about EQing individual tracks. Ha ha. The phase explanation is so satisfying. Thank you!😊
Jake, God's blessings to you and your team.
Wow, thanks for making this available!
Thanks for sharing My Friend!! 😊🥁🇵🇭

❤❤❤ this is very impactful
whoever was mixing this should be listening more to what he's saying

Yes, indeed.
Muy buena masterclass, aprendí mucho !
thank you for this Jake and Churchfront team! really want to up our church mix
Good Class Teachings
This is Great stuff. I'm pretty new and knew some of the concepts. The Mastering part at the end will help me a lot. I can see where I've gone wrong in some of my past recordings.
Great video!
When he spoke about 3D mixing all I could think about was
United Pursuit ( the Garden album ).
There are so many layers on it
Great video and with great explanations!
Great video but I learn more by looking at what he is talking about. Meaning have a mixing board in front and go through what the vocab means for common folks trying to learn from the "beginning." Thanks.
This was great. Thanks!
Jesse is a Christian techy Seth Rogan. Change my mind…
Thanks for the video super helpful and easy to understand. Appreciate these resources!!!
Great video! Appreciate all the advice!
This great info, thank you for sharing!
Hey great video, thank you! Is it possible to make timestamps? That would be super helpful :)
Perhaps do your own and add to your comment?

@@user-bb3ci3gn7s No Sir, I probably would have done it myself as public service. Do take care!
I guess he's not talking techniques here like mixing drums or vocals. He's talking about philosophy.
@@henryvanweeren7233 ah okay, sorry for misinterpreting your comment. Likewise, take care 🙂👍
This just further confirmed that I have no idea what I am doing. lol I definitely took a lot of that information in, but I don't have the knowledge or expertise with our software to actually implement it.
Im using Waves Tune Realtime + Midi Controller (Korg Nanokontrol 2) to control scale root/type in my live DAW (Reaper/Studio One)
Thank you
Glad to see I’m not the only sound guy that makes fun of the lead singer 😃
This dude definitely knows his stuff!
29:05 the smartest thing I ever heard about EQ
Great video
Great video!!! Thanks a lot.
I had no idea Seth Rogen was a church sound guy!
😂

If wonder if God will look down and say, "Wow that's some awesome mixing there. Too bad 99% of them in that Church will not see heaven."
What makes you say that?

Is this mixing for live sound or the post mixing?

1:40:39 mastering
@1:09:39 if your daw has a scripting language attached to it (like reaper with lua ), it’s not too difficult to switch keys via a pop up script
For video about audio…. Why is the audio soooo low for all of these videos?? I have to crank it to hear these videos
Love the content. Don’t slam me.it’s just funny seeing a mixing masterclass and the mix for the mics in the video sound horrible 😆
You don't teach driving in a fancy S-Class. A honda does the job.
He mentions that he uses two reverbs (one short, one long) and a delay, I wonder if the delay is ping-pong or some other form of delay?
1:23:00 is exactly why I will never use avid in a live setting.
1:13:49 gate threshold crossed

Reaper is the best :)
I prefer Psalms 23 and Isaiah 60 but that's just from a "wacky" old "boomer" who remembers SOUND DOCTRINES...Meh

Great video! But in a 20 min drive to work there were 6 ads I had to skip. That's absolutely Overkill and makes me want to avoid this channel.
Considering the video is about the length of 20 normal videos, makes sense. Also you can get RUclips premium. No ads!
Also, you get a masterclass with buttloads of awesome information - FOR FREE!!!
I have had 6 ads for way shorter vids. It's getting worse. The ads in general are over kill, considering it never was like this before YT came out with a paid option, and they get rich anyway off others contents and data. It's very off putting, and just paying for premium should not be forced
Is that devil worshiping?? Cool!
If you are recording service on a separate day then you have nothing in common with the vast majority.
The amount of time he walks out of the frame and the director crossfades the video is mind-numbing. I know its an audio class, but the lack of video skills is distracting.
😂😂
He doesn't really go into compression huh?
I'm a studio mixer and the only elusive thing about live foh mixing to me is how to handle Master Bus compression.
Are you thinking overall shape?
Are being really conservative?
Are you being aggressive and changing settings as the music gets less intense throughout the set?
Or do you purely soft knee low ratio as a leveler?
Sorry Jesse is not an expert I wanted to correct that

Ironic sound guys on a sound channel on RUclips talking about sound and the sound is horrible might want to use a desesser.
