Sega Saturn + Japan-exclusive... yeah, you likely wouldn't have heard about it. I believe around 700-800 Saturn games are JP-exclusive, so that's around 75% of the entire library.

I appreciate that thing you said about Sexuality and Reactionary Views near the end there- that they aren't just the purview of right wing thinkers, and can pervade anybody's thoughts if they're not careful. I remember being on the Escapist forum back when the Dragon's Crown controversy happened, and one of my biggest memories was that in the middle of a flamewar thread, a younger guy just asked honestly, "If I like big breasts, is that bad? Am I a bad person?" and the silence was deafening; the people tearing the game apart had no answer for him, and the people blindly reacting to their criticism just wanted to indoctrinate him into their hate. We absolutely owe young girls to be unchained from the cosmetics and clothing industry, from all these invisible pressures that make them miserable and depressed... but we also owe it to young boys not to go so far in the other direction that we make their own sexuality out to be a barely-tolerated crime- there's nuance to be had! We are _so_ messed up about sex and it's a huge struggle right now.
All that said! Thanks for another great review, I really loved seeing so many games I'd never seen before; you're right, the aesthetics are immaculate. What amazing works of art.

Your mentioning of fantasy artists brings to mind of my mom's old fantasy book covers, and one of her favorite pair of artits, Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell. They're a married pair that have made absolutely mesmerizing pieces over the years. They have an annual calendar that my brother and I buy for her every year for her collection, and she has been collecting them for long before we were born. So, I grew up seeing that art, and was always fascinated by how ethereal and gorgeous the figures in the images were. I've always had issues with body image, and still do in rough times, but I've always looked to inspired pieces like their work, and in the stuff you're covering with Vanillaware, and it helps me to get more comfortable with how my body is. Am I as bodacious as some of the women in these art styles? Totally not! But I can still see the beauty in those pieces, and in myself knowing that I'm just as beautiful in my own way. So, thank you for highlighting that with your talk throughout the video, and I'll be looking forward to the second part like I do with each new release!

I know this is a weird question but did Conan came from Boris Vallejo or were they inspired by it or is that just a concidence? Because it reminds me of art like Conan and Red Sonja.
PS I do like Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell's art it's very cool and the details on these paintings like the backdrops and characters are incredible.

@@meowmeowmcpurrington2480 Conan the Barbarian is from 1932, so a lot older than Vallejo. The style is one that was popular with illustrators of pulp stories like Tarzan, Conan or Doc Savage after world war II, with Frank Frazetta probably being the biggest name in the sort of scantily-clad fantasy art world of the time.

This might get overlooked or laughed at, but I gotta get this off my chest.
For the past decade or so, I had steadily dropped out of gaming, partly due to depression and developing a cynical eye towards the gaming industry. I won’t go into what my issue was or still is, but the result of it was me forgetting what inspired me to take such an interest in games in the first place. When I was growing up, I had always stumbled upon older games that I could never get my hands on, but wound up fascinated by their style and gameplay. Games much like Princess Crown.
KBash, for the last few videos, you’ve reminded me of some of the games that inspired me to want to be a game designer, and put into words what I loved about them and what caused me to care so much and want to learn from them, even if I could never play them. It’s a simple, perhaps a little silly and cheesy feeling, but I thought you deserved my thanks for reminding me what it was like to be happy in this medium.

Unless I missed it, you didn't mention Muramasa's Shigurui difficulty. I don't remember whether or not it was called like this in game, but I recall calling it "Impossible difficulty". Your total hp becomes 1 for the entire game, but you gain your other stats normaly.
It is indeed a lot more difficult than the other two modes, but if you block you don't take any damage, basically turning your Swords' durabilities into your HP. Surprisingly it works well with the combat, since you are so much more agile than your foes and don't lose a much progress if you die.
And in all 3 difficulties it's worth it to grind the centipede boss for a quick max level once you unlock it.
Other than that, I don't judge that Oni, I would nom Momohime if I could.

The only video I've not watched yet is Xenogears because I want to play it first, but I'll be back!

I'm sorry, but journos complaining about sexy women have never ever ever ever had a valid point, and no amount of comparison between real life celebrities and cartoon characters will ever change that.
Women overwhelmingly want to play attractive characters, these characters are often designed by women.
Putting aside the artistic integrity argument (and the fact that one of the bigger journalists prominently involved in this discourse has been recorded on stream having an insane mommy-told-me-i-can't-look-at-this-yet panic attack when confronted with sexy imagery in a game), the fact that the creator proved that his own work presented men similarly and then was attacked for homophobia proves that this was never about sexism, but about something fundamentally anti-human in this ideology

    A couple of things:
    • The minor criticism of Muramasa here from the perspective of playing Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir first is a bit odd and ignores just how much of a MASSIVE improvement Leifthrasir was over the original. I think it's fair to argue that Leifthrasir is so good because Muramasa came out first and allowed Vanillaware to hone their ability to make a satisfying combat system.
    • On the media uproar over the way women have been depicted in Dragon's Crown, I'm not convinced that exaggerated character designs have that much of an effect on young people's self esteem. Certainly it has vastly less effect than the very real social media influencers who flaunt sex and wealth constantly.
Personally, while some of the designs don't appeal to me, I find them gratuitous in a more "horny teenager" way that's far more comical than it is offensive, and to me at least, hasn't gone so far as to distract from the overall great artistry.

    I'm gonna be very honest
I was fairly young when I initially saw dragon's crown, like 14 or 15 or so
And back then, the only reason I wanted to try it out was because of the "funny booby ladies" and not much more...
I didn't have a playstation 3 or 4 and so the game just slipped into the back of my mind...
Around 1 or 2 years ago, I dabbled in ps3 emulation, and since I didn't have interest in the big bombastic 3D cinematic games (I mean look at my pfp, it's a 2D rayman, I love 2D art), this game popped into my head and I went on to play it...
I quickly fell in love with vanillaware
I played 13 sentinels, odinsphere and recently grimgrimoire and the craziest thing is, it all started because I saw a character with breasts...
This is what's crazy, it's appreciation for something once you grow up
You go from desiring something because it gives you short term satisfaction, like food, flashiness or sex, to desiring something that fills your mind with creativity, art, great stories and greater themes, wonderful style and gorgeous attention to detail.
So even if those journalists might have thought that the sexualization was "ruining this generation", I think the fact that this game's sexualization led to me trying out a game that changed my whole perspective on art, I think that's better than whatever the fuck including more vapid representation and reduced risqué material could ever do
So thank you Vanillaware, for hooking me with a dumb, juvenile desire, and leading me to an artistic world I never would have ever looked at.
And thank you Kbash for taking another look at dragon's crown and giving the topic of sexualization a genuine look.

  • @ostrichlord9097

You handled the topic of sexuality in art much better than i would have. Whilst sexual censorship has always been present, i find it extremely annoying that more and more people feel the need to criticise and censor pieces of art purely on a reactionary basis.
They try to make arguments on the moral and social impacts of such body portrayels, whilst completely ignoring the context in which the art exists - far removed from any kind of realistic bodily expectations/commentary.
These people very much have an axe to grind and aim to shame and restrict artistic expression to what suits their own vision. And whilst i understand feeling uncomfortable with extremes, why do the same people not feel the need to comment on male representions, varying between godly physiques like Hercules, and shambling visages like Hunchback of Notradame?
People can distinguish between reality and fiction from an early age, which is why these classic figures haven't posed issues for men's self image. If we censor all of these artistic portrayels and leave ourselves with only social media icons and celebrities for comparison, i believe body standards will only get worse. And lets be honest, if admiring big honkers was a crime, then 99% of humanity should be behind bars.

I don’t really think the issue is whether fanservice or smut is art. Its moreso the decades of bad female representation + mostly fanservice for guys, which isn’t really the artist fault.
It’s the equivalent of for years, having male guys wearing skimpy speedos and having characters as flat as a board, or 2d note personalities meant to appeal to females. There’s nothing with it, eyecandy for eyecandy sake is valid. Its just if thats all you see, you get tired of it. (that’s not even mentioning realword issues which can make it even more sour.)

"Think of the children! And their body image!" is no different from "Think of the children! DND is satanic!". Nobody makes these complaints when real male actors take "enhancers" and go through unsafe diets/workout regimens to reach extreme physiques in record time. It's solely an inherently fallacious excuse for the woke sex-haters to bash the rare forms of sexual expression they don't approve of. They loved it when Baldur's Gate 3 lets you do things with bears, and hated it when drawings show skin, unless they're the ones making these drawings. "How dare you draw your kid character like that! In general I liked this video, but the problem I have with the way you talk about the sexualisation in Dragon's Crown bothers me. My personal contention with the horniness of Dragon's Crown isn't so much that it's there, but that it's very unequal. There's a lot of women just being draped over the screen in passively sexual positions and I haven't really seen anything of the sort involving men at all, though I admittedly haven't played the game myself. I just don't think that portraying women as passive sexual objects while not doing that with men is progressive at all; it's still quite sexist, just not sex negative. 🤷

This gets a 200% bonus for dropping IPAT's video on Princess Crown...good memories.
edit: But i beyond disagree with the assessment that fictional characters asthetics/looks will drive someone to hate themselves...especially when your example compares a (clearly) fantasy female against "youtubers" who are living flesh and blood people...so, YES, those girls who viewed those real people who are good looking, are going to compare themselves...because it's a literal living example and it happens everyday
The difference here, again, is what is REAL and what is FANTASY. The cover models on Maxim, Celebrities, Fitness experts, beauty fashionistas, etc are REAL people who have achieved REAL results to their looks. It is palpable and "obtainable"...but the question to those "without" is: "how?" And for those who cannot fathom the answer or have tried and failed and have let that failure consume them to the point of dispair...that's where 'this problem' starts to occur.
There are other factors that weave into that problem as well...such as upbrining by parents/guardians, social circles and even society; to which those can conflict with each other and have thier own separate "values" between every person. But that's a long wall of text to explain i wont do, but the end of the day fact is: REAL things have more of an actual impact to people than FANTASY things...and in the case Fantasy begins to hold more weight in a persons life than Reality...there is something much deeper wrong going on in thier lives and mind; and help should be found ASAP to find the root of that.

As a man, I would look at the fighter in Dragon's Crown and think, "Man, I wish my chest was 8 times wider than my head." It's like looking at Bugs Bunny and saying that it's a terrible depiction because children will think all bunnies should talk.

Regarding the body issues problem with the depiction of women in Dragon’s crown, I don’t understand why this is the big takeaway from the controversy.
Dragon’s Crown has some of the biggest body varieties when it comes to the female form, and they are all depicted as beautiful and sexy. Does it have the big chested bimbo? Yes. She is allowed to exist. But it also has the Squat grinding athletic type, and even the “normal girl” aesthetic with the elf, who proves that boobs and butts aren’t the only physical features a girl can have. Everyone has toes!
And hell, if you’re gonna talk about little girls comparing themselves to the beauty standards of Dragon’s Crown, they don’t even have to. Tiki’s arguably the ho-
If anything the male body type is put through a magnifying lense, almost every male save for the wizard and the little shota thief are absolutely jacked to a nigh impossible degree, and even disregarding that, they excluding the villains, are absolutely symmetrically beautiful in the face department.
I’ve talked about how the Fighter is like a Frankenstein of fantasies ensuring that any woman gets something out of him. He’s not your average male fighter at all, and you could say that all the male and female designs in Dragon’s Crown are far more diverse than the actual cookie cutter Barbies and Kens STILL found in American movies and games. How the hell is a guy supposed to compete with Ryan Gosling?

The ultimate difficulties in Muramasa and Odin Sphere fuckin' rule
In Muramasa, you only have 1 HP, and breaking your sword deals like 6 damage so you have to get through fights without ever breaking your swords or missing a parry. Your swords' energy becomes your life bar, and you have to skirt every encounter on the edge of a razor. It's one of the only 1-hit-kill difficulties I've ever finished because of just how awesome it is and how tangibly it changes the way you play. Not worse, only more interesting.

Vanillaware's games have never been my favorites. I've enjoyed them all, but there's always just enough jank, just enough padding, that they don't make it into the highest echelons of gaming for me. ...And yet. Every last one of them is completely unforgettable. They are utterly unrestrained celebrations of art and beauty, turning every aspect of reality up to 11 and distilling that reality down to only its most breath-taking aspects. Not a single concession made to subtlety anywhere. I can understand why that turns some people away, particularly when that same lack of restraint is applied to sexuality, but *man* is the result freaking beautiful.

56:08 > "It's not better than Odin Sphere's multiple kinds of combat… but it could easily be one of the greatest IN odin sphere, if retroactively inserted"
So I should say I'm still watching but this was the core reason I actually was kind of hoping that odin sphere's contributions to the legacy would have been broken up into two parts- the original ps2 version of the game was far closer to princess crown than the remake. There's explicitly a scroll you can get in the tutorial section talking about how it's ideal to try and peel off enemies and fight them one-on-one rather than barreling down waves (something that the original POW meter mechanics greatly exacerbated). You can even kind of see this with how fast you do in fact 'careen' through odin sphere's maps? it was never designed to move that fast, lmao. Additionally there was a cap on the UI aesthetics as well- texts were simplified to just white letters on black screen rather than the lavishly rendered attic archive & the skill system was completely overhauled for leifthrasir.
I haven't tried the classic version on ps4 to see if it truly preserved that original experience, but so much of leifthrasir's updated mechanics are wholly thanks to muramasa's playing around rather than the original ps2 version or even princess crown proper. Dashes and dives were introduced in Mura & carried forward to leifthrasir, honing the original, somewhat repetitive combat into that same fluid feel- which is why I felt OS's segment could have served the narrative of this lineage better by being broken in half. Seeing as OS was made in response to criticisms towards PC, then Muramasa was made in response to criticisms towards specifically PS2 OS.
I know you kind of acknowledged something adjacent to this when addressing that leifthrasir is considered the intended version of the game, but i feel that's only truly accurate because of how muramasa was able to expand on how vanillware approaches combat, combos, and the high speed of those therein (& also i think this factors into the mention for a desire for muramasa to be more polished when in actuality leifthrasir is the polished one). PS2 OS sits perfectly in the middle of that line rather than feeling like it jumped too far ahead before doubling back, and almost serves as like a benchmark for vanillaware's progress & approach to aesthetic & mechanic pleasure.
All that said tho, I'm still watching and having a good time! I like your thoughts about aesthetics and decadence a lot where this studio is concerned since those aspects soak thru these games like espresso thru a tiramisu, haha

So it's the difference between a mode that's slightly easier than normal mode, and a mode that's harder than normal mode. That's why I say it's Easy and Hard mode.

These days I'm much less against it, at most I'd hold it against something when it feels out of place but if it carries it as part of its identity then that's just part of the whole, nowadays I think it's entitled to judge what art an artist makes. If you don't like the subject matter, move on, not everything is made for me or for any specific individual bashing it and the audience it has seems silly to me, it's not actually going to cause some grand societal change for the worse or anything anyway.
