  • I love a good test. In this video we test out the theory that double cups get you better seedling results.

Thanks for doing this video! I had an idea that the double cup method was not that significantly better than a single pot based on my years of starting tomato seeds. Your test confirmed what I believed.

Glad it helped and yep I would not waste the cup! Thanks for commenting, happy gardening.

If you don’t use a double cup, you have to have a different container to put them in so you could just water in the bottom and you wouldn’t have to water on top but I don’t find that the best deal

Glad to see that there’s no real difference. Reusing nursery pots has worked fine for me so I never saw the reason to buy the plastic cups that I see so many RUclips gardeners use.

Yes save time, money and plastic and skip it. The only thing I could think of that might be helpful is that the plants might dry out less in the greenhouse with the stored water. But that was it!

As I've been looking into (to try this year), what I've noticed is where this method really works is when hydroponic nutrients are used instead of just water. What I am unsure of (haven't found a comparison yet) is whether 1) one using hydroponic solutions in both styles, like you, or 2) one uses dual cup hydroponic solution vs single cup standard fertilizer -- if there would be any difference...

Yea Hydroponics is a whole other test. I am experimenting with hydroponics in a foam cooler right now but not against any other method. Just trying to figure out a good fertilizer product. But this method is being sold to people on its own as a better method for seedlings. Which the only time I can see that being true is in really high heat or periods where you are not able to water. Hydroponics feels more advanced for the starting gardener but your theory has merit and could make a good test for sure!

I watched your video. I really liked it. But I do prefer the double cup because that way you can move them around to a different spot without carrying a whole tray. If you plan them in a cup separately, you do have to have a drainage hole that means you should put them into arectangular container that will hold water.

Absolutely, that makes good sense! If it works for you in other ways I say do what makes garden life easy for you! I just like to test common theories. So glad you watched it and commented. Keep gardening in a way that brings your joy and plants!

@@JolleanSmith I have gardened in many ways. Single cups work but realy need to have a big container to place them in . And keep it watered . I also like to spray water on the leaves under my lights. And turn a fan on

@@JolleanSmith I wish I could post photos on here and if you can I don’t know how ha ha. But I have used those plastic containers basically used for to put your shoes in to keep the dirt off your carpet or linoleum. I have cups was just holes on the edge on the bottom and I just fill that whole tray in with water and it sucks as needed and my flowers are doing so good unbelievable and of course you have to have grow lights.

First you said that the double cup method produced more roots, then you said there wasn’t much of a difference.
Thank you for this video because I will be using the double cup technique simply because it grows more roots and for the convenience of the water reservoir that the second cup provides.
There’s no plastic waste if you reuse the cups over and over again as long as they are still intact 👍🏼

When comparing the two side by side you can see there is no significant difference in the root system. I looked at those roots for the first as I recorded, so you all got the analytics as my brain was working through what I was looking at.
If you love the method, do what brings you joy! I think the method has merit if in a situation you cannot keep up with watering. But I won’t get behind the claim it grows better plants at this point. Evidence just wasn’t strong enough for me to add the additional step.
      Thanks for watching!

I use double cup method so that I can keep water from dripping out every where when watering as I don't have a green house and I start my seeds indoors as I dont have enough water proof containers to hold all of my starter pots.

    • @JolleanSmith
      @JolleanSmith  5 месяцев назад

That absolutely makes sense to me and a good reason to double cup it. It’s also good if you have fast drying plants. But what I wasn’t convinced of, is that it grows better plants. That I failed to see in my experiment. But not against the method if it helps a person grow plants 😊 Thanks so much for commenting.

If you use a single cup you still need drainage holes. There for you need a container that will hold your cups and poor water into conainer to water. That gets to be a pain when moving them

Soil shouldn’t sit in water. Search double cup method with wicking as this keeps the soil out of the water whilst still delivering needed moisture to the growing plant.

The second cup comes with a cost and you don’t need it so not sure about cheaper. But if it is a method you like, I say do what brings you gardening joy!
