Iirc they mentioned it potentially being a beta rocket launcher, (nevermind it was a beta laser gun) makes me wonder what other stuff they cut along with the weird pyramid stage (though that could've just as easily been a test map) I hope they find the actual 3D models they based the sprites on but those are lost to time probably.
You know, looking at the concept art from the recent rerelease of Doom 1 snd 2, o think the rifle weapons would have worked if it was like a high damage, long range weapon that could used to be dispose of imps and zombies from off the distance. It would have used its own ammo and have it be a bit rare to make it balance. As for the Machine Gun weapon, maybe have like its own weapon that uses pistol ammo while changing gets its own more powerful like in doom 3. Just some random ideas.
It would be very complicated to code this in the game engine, it's already good that I managed to code a flamethrower in the game engine, I'm very happy with my work he and really cool I love the rendering it gives in game
If this was added as an actual weapon I feel they probably would've used some of the N64's power to give crispy demons like, blackened death sprites with particles coming off it but I imagine in large hordes it would be a framerate killer to do anything too unique with it considering the game's other limitations
I think doom 64 would have been memorative if it had the flamethrower / fire balista from the legacy of rust. Then people wouldn't have confused it with a simple port
@@Spriterist nah the flamethrower is too similar to the plasma rifle, it would just be another projectile weapon, if 64 had looking up and down a Grenade Launcher would fit nicely
Why cut the flamethrower? Who wouldn't want to use a flamethrower in DOOM? Who made that decision and did they get rightfully fired after making that decision?
no idea, maybe they changed their minds during the development of the game, and found that the idea of the flamethrower did not fit for a Doom game maybe, i dont know
The had to lower the rate of fire of the plasma coz the N64 couldnt handle all the plasma sprites on screen. Thats the only reason the plasma is so meh... So this flamethrower would not have work either... unless you were happy to play a 5fps every time you fired it lol
yes, it was a prototype of Unmaker's design confirmed in the Doom 64 alpha rom on the Unmaker pickup sprite which still has the old design of that weapon cut from the game, but the weapon design doesn't look like a laser weapon at all, it looks more like a flamethrower design to me, so maybe when midway designed this weapon they may have thought about making a flamethrower for the game during development, we don't know
That's just hear-say. No one actually knows what it was intended to be. It could have been intended to be a lightning gun like the one in Quake. No one actually 'knows' for sure. Unless you have a solid source that can be taken as 'fact' it's just hear-say and should not be worded as 'fact'

Imagine using Sprintrap sprites from fnaf as an archvile for D64 mod, that would be too funny to see 😂
That’s flambé right there.
If only this had super crispy demon death sprites, this would look super,

@@styd0518,
I already know it would be too complicated. It's more a wish thing rather than something that can be real.

I'm glad they used it as a laser instead.

That’s what the Unmaker is for 😉
@@doompunk64 i love the unmaker but it just shoots straight, something like a flamethrower would've been interesting to spice it up

INB4 a Doom 64ized Calamity Blade?
maybe or not, I didn't plan them on my to-do list
@@styd0518 I guess it might be also possible for Doom 64ized Legacy of Rust monsters as well?
@@zonilo1 Yes, anything is possible when you have the game's source code in your hands.

It seems functionaly identical to both the plasma rifle and the Unmaker, so I reckon it was considered redundant.

that cut weapon wasn't a flamethrower, it was a early version of the unmaker back when it was going to be a standard lazer rifle
