The last to leave the room cover reminds me of some Alice and Wonderland art from a game I used to play as a kid mixed with some junji ito. I don't like horror books but I love that cover.

Bought After the Forest, looks really good. Picked it out at the store. I think that illumicrate has good choices.
I absolutely loved The Last to Leave the Room cover. The original cover was so cheap and tacky looking that really anything would have been an improvement. And I really enjoyed the book! I didn’t really like Jane Lawrence, either, btw.
I'm glad you liked it! My brain is fighting with the redesign so much because I'm a scaredy cat. I'm so happy you liked the book, but didn't like Jake Lawrence. That definitely gives me hope.
The evernight book reminds me of the Cheshire cat. I really like it.

The Owlcrate Starling House is SO pretty! I just got done reading it and it is so good! It was a 5 star for me hands down. I got the BOTM edition, but I loved it so much I will probably buy it again in a special edition after I see what Illumicrates looks like. It was that good.
Illumicrates After the Forest is so pretty! I am gonna have to scrape up money to get it off Mercari.
I agree doing these in bulk is better to watch than just several short videos.

All I've heard is AMAZING things about Starling House so I'm definitely going to read it next after the october book club pick (which I still haven't started. whoops). I'm SO EXCITED to see what the Illumicrate one looks like. Idk how anything could beat the Owlcrate one though.
I bet After the Forest won't be too expensive because it's a lesser known book. I bet if you wait a month or two, it'll be like 25$. But who knows. Some books become weirdly popular so just be on the lookout.
Hurricane Wars is a reskinned Reylo fanfic, so I'm not surprised you immediately got Kylo vibes. However, that's the only thing that I've heard about the hurricane wars, so I'm not going to knock it immediately. We've been seeing an influx of Reylo fanfics that have been reskined and published. I just wish they made it a little less obvious that they were Reylo fics. I think this one was too ingrained in actual Star Wars plot-wise be to super removed tho, where most of the others (Ali Hazelwood for example) were already AUs, so it was easy enough to hide the fanfic start. (Nothing wrong with fanfic being published, I write fanfic myself, but I hate when the effort isn't made to correct flaws that naturally happen due to the difference in how fanfiction vs. books are written, published, and read and the different audiences.)
I also love kitchen stuff. The spoon rest and Starling house had to be my favorite things. I also loved the journal from illumicate and i'm pretty sure I'm going to use it as my reading bujo for 2024.

I honestly don't care whether things are fanfic or not. My brain is pretty good at separating things like that. That's why I never had a problem with The Love Hypothesis. I'll probably forget by the time I read it that it's fanfic 😆 Hopefully you end up liking it too!
The spoon rest is literally my favorite. I'm obsessed. That journal is going to work so well. It's a good size to write a lot in and that should be fun!

I plan on reading The Starling House before the end of the year. I wasn’t expecting it to be in OwlCrates box and chose it from BOTM 😑. I do like the new cover. It’s the same but different with the flowers at the top. Not sure if that is supposed to be wisteria? The last book you unboxed is is the nicest I think. I loved the dark green cover with the orange foiling and the hardback was really cool.
Oh no 😅!!!! You can keep the BOTM and give it to someone as a gift for Christmas! That way it doesn't go to waste and I've heard it's really good.
It seems like everyone really liked the Illumicrate redisgn the best, but I definitely loved Starling House the most.

After the Forest has a romance 💖 I'm like you, I'm always a little disappointed when things don't have romance. Also like you I've been loving Owlcrate's redesigns...except for this month's YA. I think with the art what you don't like is overly rendered styles (IE too much effort into making it look 3D/realistic/too much light and shade and smoothness), and you prefer more painterly or interpretive styles with animation to the figures. And I'm with you on that too! So mostly I spent this whole video nodding along lol

😱 You hit the nail on the head!!! I could not put into words what the heck it was about the art style I didn't like, but it's definitely that weird overly rendered style! The owlcrate YA book was really disappointing and I didn’t like the style or edges… it also looked so similar to silver in the bone edition.
