- Have you ever tried trolling up reef fish on lures in 50 to 120 mtrs (300 to 400 feet) of water before? Me either but in this episode that's exactly what I do and it worked a treat. Fishing off Moreton Island & Stradbroke Island using swimbait style lures behind a downrigger, I catch a range of fish species including Snapper, pearl perch and bar cod. Enjoy.

Love the way you're willing try something new AND take us on the journey warts and all. Love your work, Greg!
Thanks mate it was certainly different but paid off in the end. Glad you enjoyed it mate.
Can someone give this man a tv show already it doesn’t get any better 😎
hahaha thanks mate glad you liked it. Cheers for the support
Great Vid, although all of my down rigging experience has been limited to 150ft max depth I would suggest you put a rod holder aft of your down rigger. This helps enormously by negating tangles with the line attached to the bomb. I dont know what strength the line on the reel is but generally wire is thinner than braid once you get over 70kg breaking strain. If you can afford it, change to a purpose built powered down rigger. The thin wire should then allow your bomb to travel more directly under the boat making it visible on the sounder. Any way kudos for using the electric reel to prove that the method works. Cheers.
Thanks mate but there's a reason it was run the way it was. The rod holder at the back of the boat is too far away to control both rods at once when letting the line out and reacting fast when over reefs, hooking up etc. I also needed to run the downrigger in that swivel rod holder as well. The new boat has the swivel rod holder and back rod holder much closer together so I can still control them both at the same time. I'm using 120lb line on the rigger and with fishing in such deep water it's a far better option than wire. Thanks
Amazing idea by an amazing fishermen, your always pushing the boundaries Greg, good on you!
Thanks for the kinds words mate it's much appreciated. I'm always trying to think outside the box mate.
👍👍 Great episode awesome new technique for ya. Some great fish caught 2.😮 I'll throw a challenge out to you flame tail snapper on the troll.
thanks mate it's something different and cool. That challenge will be tough lol. Flames aren't a huge fan of artificial baits at the best of times but I like a challenge lol.
That hurt ME when you broke off! Awwwwww!
haha yep it hurt alright lol.
Unreal. Such a foreign technique for me but definitely has its place!
Cheers mate yep it's different but it works.
Picked the day for it. Great to see you trying out stuff. What next? 250m
yes mate i will keep going deeper and she what i can achieve with it.
Awesome video bud. Try and look for a pancake down rigger bomb. Their skinny with a metal tail fin. I find it works a lot better in deeper water and current. Use them in 20-30m with a diver to get snapper off the reefs..
Thanks heaps mate. yeah I had troubles getting a pancake and had to settle with the other type. Cheers.
LOve your vids. Thanks. Trebles on a boat... not so
thanks mate
Hi mate, I’m trying the down rigs at the moment. Thanks for the video. What type of boat you got? Love the centre consoles.
Hey mate cheers. Its an older formosa mate but i've just sold that to build all-round boat. First video of it just went up on my channel this week. Cheers
Put your rod in a holder further back from the down rigger. Not in front.
Thanks mate but there's a reason it was run the way it was. The rod holder at the back of the boat is too far away to control both rods at once when letting the line out and reacting fast when over reefs, hooking up etc. I needed the down rigger one to be in the rod holder that swivels so I can reach the downrigger weight.
Worked a treat Greg that's awesome 👌 but as Phillip mentioned I would run the lure rod behind the down rigger mate if you can just my 2 cents on the way I was taught trolling for trout mate 👍

Hi Greg
I just watched your video and suggest that you put your rod behind the downrigger ( towards the stern ) ,that way the line clears the rigger and gives you freedom to fight the fish with less tangles.
Also ,what is the boat you are using and are you doing a show on what it is and how it's set up ?????
TJ
Thanks mate but there's a reason it was run the way it was. The back rod holder is too far away to control both rods at once when letting the line out and reacting fast when over reefs, hooking up etc. It was an older Formosa centre console that one and I recently sold it to build a new platey which I just put a vid up about. Part 2 coming soon. Cheers.
Insane video mate. What a great idea
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it
Could of been leather jackets.
yeah every chance it was mate.
How far off the bottom are you wanting your lure? I saw you said you were 10-30m further than bottom depth.
mate I'm trying to run the lure around 3 to 5mtrs above the bottom. Very difficult to tell but.
@@gregswickedfishing yeah, my bottom is reefy and rough as guts, so could be a recipe for disaster ;)
