Mark Vigil This was a very unusual fight. Throughout the battle Tristan relied on technique and finesse, and here we see Cedric outskill him in these areas. It would have made more sense of Cedric overpowered him to be honest.

anyone else think Tristan knew he would die in this battle and wanted a glorious end? Ever hear the story of Tristan and Isolde, which the character is famous for. Perhaps Isolde is long dead and he is ready to join her... just makes it that much sadder though
Ben Kowalkoski Yeah, he knew. I believe it was his wish to die in battle. Like Galahad said: I don't kill for pleasure, unlike some and than that look upon Tristan.
Yea, he set his bird free before the battle, he treasured the bird a lot,,, suicidal tendencies, even by the hands of others, can be shown through the acts of giving up one’s’ treasured possessions
This was a winnable fight for him, but once Cedric pulled the cheapshot he honestly should have run away. They were evenly matched, and with an unfair disadvantage it was too risky to keep fighting.
Best sword fight of the movie, hands down (& one of the finest ever put to film), the sad tragedy of Tristan's premature demise at the hands of perhaps the only powerful swordsman in Europe skilled & cunning enough to beat him notwithstanding (granted there was possibly several swordfighting champions over in Ireland, up in Scandinavia, up in the far north Hebridean Islands where the native Picts were more fearsome, or back in the lands of the Sarmatian Knights who could give Cedric a fiercer & more closely contested challenge, perhaps!). It's amazing how the best, most formidable & deadliest warriors seem to find each other on the battlefield.
One of the few cinematic fights that does my head in every time I see it. No way trust an loses, even if his opponent cheats. He dispatches people with ease. This really winds me up!
:49 - :52 ... When Tristan looks at his blood, he seems surprised; it's like no one had ever been good enough to draw blood from him before. I think Cerdic was maybe the first formidable foe he'd met. And it broke my heart when Tristan was dying and looked up at his hawk (who wouldn't leave him despite being freed). When I first saw it, I was hoping that he'd whistle and his hawk would come down and attack Cerdic.
what do u expect...................it hadnt taken him more than 2 moves to kill anyone else he had fought in the movie.............. he was shocked that he was losing
@@willsteel7665 No. They buried him. After the battle Boris is shown carrying Tristan's body on his back. Then at the funeral, when the spread Lancelot's ashes, there is a grave with Tristan's armor on it.
Even before the blood you can see it in his face when they go back to guard position after their first exchange. The look of doubt, the re-assesing, trying to work out an opponent who's better than he's faced in who knows how long.
In my opinion this scene doesn't portray Cedric to be bad at all. I think it shows his personality, it shows that he lives for battle and for honor (he gave Tristan his sword back after he lost it). I think this scene shows that Cedric isn't evil, just because he's the enemy, it hows that he too is a human that values certain things in life and perhaps death. I guess you could say it prepares the duel between Arthur and Cedric, but only because it shows how different they are.
I saw Tristan's death coming the moment he began fighting Cedric... It's incredible how emotional his death is to me, even though I saw it coming from the start. Truly a magnecifent movie.
Now that's badass. A saxon chief would carry a longsword as a status symbol, and be well trained in using it as a deadly weapon. Glad they represented that and didn't go the "giant barbarian chieftain who swings a big weapon wildly" route.
To anyone who says that Cedric cheated, there is no cheating on a battlefield. He outskilled tristan, btw would be stupid to fight with a one-handed sword and do nothing with the other hand, for dueling daggers and shields as offhands have been seen just everywhere.
Hilarious how Cerdic was this good at sword fitting; and then Arthur beat him easily. That's what you get when you make a strong antagonist; and then let the "hero" trash him like he was nothing: insatisfaction. Same as bad sex.
Got to Remember here that yes true Arthur isnt as good as a swordsman as Tristan. However Tristan does wound Cedric here which made him more vulnerable giving Arthur a chance to defeat him.Tristan gave him a good fight but Cedric was using a knife on the sly so that's why he got beat also he had just been in a battle fighting numerous men and was obviously more fatigued. But even though Cedric cheated you can see that he respects Tristan as a warrior which is why he gave him his sword back after he looses it so he can fight to the last breath.
Tristan was my favorite actor in this film. Since the beginning of the movie it's established his skill with the sword is untouchable. In this scene the music and Tristan finally realizing he has met an opponent on par with his skill is so apparent. When the orchestra hits it tells us this situation. The best touch was when Tristan falls and swings his sword from the knee to give himself distance, from what I know could be the first time ever in his case. This movie was just OK, but this fight scene, was truly epic and so sad at the same time.
"Get up, dark little man. You have armor of iron, Scythian, I do not. Get. UP. I want more. I've been pierced more times than you, arrow-flinger, man of the steppes. Took my first skull at 15. Yet we live, eh? Strike me down then, send me to Wotan. If... You... Can."
Please, Cedric did not cheat, every fighter carried a variety of blades, Tristan could pull a dagger of his own, but he probably felt strongest using just one weapon. Cedric decided to use two, therefore choosing, for example, not to use a strong two handed swing. Tristan made enough mistakes to lose, closing the distance and allowing Cedric to use the dagger.
Good ppint. You knew it was over the second Cedric got Tristan under the armpit. At least Tristan didn't go into the battle EXPECTING to lose (unlike Obi Wan in New Hope). I friggin HATE that. Its like they are trying to justify their lack of skill by 'allowing' themselves to lose.
There are two things about this that I hate: 1. He killed him with Tristan's own sword, and 2. He waited very carefully until he was sure Arthur was watching, the bastard

First of all, the legend of Tristan actually predates Arthur by over one hundred years. Some author in the Middle Ages decided to present him as one of the knights of the round table. And by technicality, he's royalty, both the son and the nephew of two different rulers and a queen. Arthur likely just heard his story and was like, I hope my story doesn't turn out this way!
These days, a throwdown between Stellan and Mads would be the title match that gets asses in seats. Back then, with Mads playing Knight #6 before he'd really popped off, it has more the energy of Young Siward coming at Macbeth before the king chops him in half.
Don't get me wrong, they establish that Tristan's no pushover, I just never thought for a second that anyone but Arthur was gonna finish off the final boss.
You gotta hand it to him, Cerdic is one cold mother, fierce fucking warrior. He had the choice of either leaving Tristan wounded, or kill him quickly so that he could rush in to save his son, but he wants to anger Arthur by dishonoring Tristan and desecrating Tristans body. Balls of steel right there. Although Mads is always way cooler than anyone else!!

The moral of this fight is very simple. No matter what a badass you think you are...there is always an opponent bigger, faster, and stronger that will kick your butt in a heartbeat. Remember Tristan before your next fight!
Allis Number tristan could of killed him in half a second but chose to fight with honour ...... if u want to know how, tristan had a blade in his pocket and we saw how accurate and quick he can throw at the start on the target.
My belief is, is that Tristan wanted to die in battle and thus in this fight. So I think he lost on purpose and just served to wear down Cedric. Thats my story and I am sticking to it.
I hope you are joking, because then Tristan would have died in disgrace, if he choose to die on purpose, and that is a disgrace to someone as badass as him. He wanted to die in battle sure(they all would want that), thats how the old world worked, but NEVER on purpose.
He died in battle. thats my explanation. Thats what happens some times. just like Lancelot died in the battle to. I do not have a problem with how he died. To me that is (: . why was it idiotic? nothing happened after the battle. I do more have a problem with how they handled the funerel, totally overshadowed by Lancelot funerel.
You know... I agree. All of the knights argued and whatnot, but they were all there to help each other. It's like earlier in the film the one guy starts chopping the lake apart. He's not planning on living, but he plans on helping his friends succeed. I feel like the point of the story was to show that in shitty conditions friends got each others backs. Even if you get fucked over yourself.
530dynasty1 he met his match in swordsmanship and then some. His opponent was able to wield a long sword in one hand with the other a dagger. How did you miss what is so obvious??
after extensive thought on this particular scene, I have come to the realization that although Cedric had honour certainly, he refused to fight sword vs sword and only won with using his dagger as a second weapon. He did not do this versus Arthur because he considered him to be a higher ranking knight...typical hollywood...movies in 60s would have an intensive 3 minute sword fight...that is how knights fought...
He pulled the knife on Tristan because he wasn't really interested in fighting him. He knew they were equally matched, and even if he won, he would be too injured to fight Arthur, which was his real target.
Portrayed by any other actor,Tristan´s death could appear a bit pathetic but Mads brings a nobility and calm to Tristan. No crybaby, this guy.He just notices blood under the armour n the look in his eyes...indifferent and fearless. Characters in epics might be intimidating, fascinating or inspiring...but Tristan´s the ONLY COOL char. As in we define the word.People aren´t cool in epics..n I know people were tough back then but he STABS Cedric in the leg andC doesn´t even go "Ouch"? Come on,man...
I don't like how all the cool characters always have to die. A few of my all time favorites - Marv from sin city, rorchach from Watchmen, tristan here. These characters made the movies for me.
"What was given me from the womb of woman is little / the spirit cannot be cut, and the gods are fed by the hot blood and selfless valor of men." Lay of Thjalf Sveressonar
35 seconds. The look of mutual respect. I love how Skaarsgard isn't the typical villain and wants to kill his opponent while he has a weapon in his hand,
The only problem with this movie is that Cerdic and Cynric were not really at Badon Hill. They arrived some 30 years later and survived to become kings. The Saxon leader at Badon Hill was Aella of Sussex most likely.
You're absolutely right! Tristans swashbuckling style and speed could have easily killed the Cerdic warlord. Plus, he had a backwards style. Thats why the Cerdic Warlord mocked him by stabbing him in the right arm, kicking his sword on the ground and stabbing him in the left rib with it. It just wasn't Tristans kill....It was Arthurs. And the same with every1 else who died, they picked the wrong opponents that wern't meant for them to kill.
From an historical context it would be interesting to examine how exactly Tristan wields both a Saracen style sword and Mongolian composite bow in addition to being trained in the traditional use of each. Considering all of the knights were supposedly serving their entire term in Britannia.
I love Tristan's sword. Like a cross between a Chinese Broadsword and a Katana. I WANT ONE! And also, I feel they should have killed off someone who was less awesome at fighting, and therefore more likely to actually have died, such as Gallahad. What a killjoy he was for the whole fucking film.
Tristan struck a chord with me the first time I watched this movie when he defended Arthur when the knights were told one more mission was in hand. He was chomping away on food as the other knights were complaining, and then...he died. It was probably the only scene in this movie I absolutely hated. I understand that maybe now I know he dies, the next time I watched the movie I saw him more and noticed him more and listened to his lines. He was the most awesome character.
If you want a more technical answer, in ancient warfare the similalrly armed enemies used to end up opposing each other as they found an equal i.e. equally armoured, equal in weapons which an average soldier would not have for arm to arm combat. They also tended to be the ones who could afford the kit and therefore of some distinction within their tribe/society. But it's a film after all and a very good one...shame Tristan had to go, but what a way to die for a soldier like him.
@JediXful You've got a point man. Cerdic held his own well against Tristan. But I still think he would've died if he hadn't pulled that dagger. Cerdic's good, but Tristan's good too. Either Cerdic died, or the fight would've just ended in a stalemate. Plus, he did almost kill Arthur. He WOULD have killed him if he had a little more physical endurance.
I get that Tristan had to die....might seem weird that a underdevoloped character with about 13 lines in the end is the one that kinda breaks our heart but Mads turned underdeveloped into mysterious. Still,Tristan is the one who gives the impression of being the most skilled swordsman...which he turns out not to be. His speciality is aim and killing with one or two strikes.....still,it´s a sad death but like I said....slightly unrealistic. Two different Tristans,
ps,..guys,this isnt Tristan,..his name is Tristram, and not the one in the stories. He had nothing to do with them.Tristran and Iseult were German and had nothing to do with Arthur, really. Not really.
Stellan is BAD-ASS! It is an honor to die fighting him. He should have been Davy Jones in Pirates. I liked him as Bootstrap but when your like this big mountain-man dude you deserve to be on top. When he sliced Tristran in the ear you wince and jump.
definitly my favorite, nice smoothe style, alway's in control, has alot of honor, fights efficiently and owns every fight, exept this one lol, witout that dagger, he'd win im sure of it, his stamina i think would have bin better , he''d wear the saxon out eventually , his style takes more time then arthus wit this saxon guy but ah well
The reason why he didn't take out the warlord in the gaps is because he's following some form of chivalry. They engage until they reach a stalemate and back off and start again. They fight until they fall and are not well enough to get up. He couldn't beat them as well as he did others coz the warlords better and stronger.
when he died the last thing he saw was his eagle that was searching him between all the people... i felt that damn pain in the throat that you feel when you can hardly hold yourself...
@buffaloackley sorry maybe i should´ve explained myself clearer: i know the classic tales of Tristan (e.g. "Tristan & Iseult"), of course the character has a profile & personality (and a very interesting one!!) but you can´t assume that all people watching the movie know the classic tales. all they have as a reference is the Tristan in the movie, and this one´s portrayed with very limited, one-dimensional personality. he´s a tough & cool badass fighter, that´s it the movie does him no justice
One o9f the most entertaining movies in the last 10 years...and Mikkelsen stole the show,to say the least. He pulled a Benicio in The usual suspects. But still....even within the frames of cinema we have to have some realism when it´s needed. Look at Tristans moves here before he gets injured the 1st and second time...slow like an old lady! And clumpsy swordhandling.Compare that to the ninja we see in the 1st battle who kills a woad without even looking at him. No...
Man i never understood if he was beheaded or just slashed Does anyone know??? It seems as though he was beheaded but in the end his body is not headless
Seriously, that guy isn't the only one who can use sneaky daggers. Tristan could have easily thrown a 'sneaky dagger' into the man's skull, but he instead chose to fight honorably, but Cerdic didn't.
I like him very much too (but check out Viggo Mortensen - he is also Danish and also a great fighter; these two guys seem very similar to me). Mads - you rock.
I think he saw a guy with that much skill and knew the threat he posed, so he took him on. Either that, or he just wanted to face a skilled opponent for sport.

+nico olsen than feel free to give a better explanation. Killing Tristan here was idiotic.
Stellan's excellent villain deserved a better movie, I think
thx :D for the video and i found the movie :D thx :D
Tristan is my favorite Knight
Tristan was the best knight of the seven. he would had killed Cerdic if he didn't had a Knife
Gotta respect the guy that stepped in front of Cedric to fight Tristan. He didn't die a coward.
"What was given me from the womb of woman is little / the spirit cannot be cut, and the gods are fed by the hot blood and selfless valor of men." Lay of Thjalf Sveressonar
In OST the song is called "Budget meeting" (for the whole battle except Arthur vs Cerdic part).
Sadly it’s not the right version, not even the one that says film version is correct. Really sucks.
Mads Mikkelsen è semplicemente divino.
What song is being Played?
Please Answer:
That Dane got brutaly owned by the Swede haha ;)
This is merely the beginning…..
the swede vs the dane
Funny both actors are Scandavanian. Lol
True. Cerdic was enjoying that fight. If he used only his sword, they would've been matched evenly throughout the entire fight.
why do my Favorite characters always die ?
If you want a more technical answer, in ancient warfare the similalrly armed enemies used to end up opposing each other as they found an equal i.e. equally armoured, equal in weapons which an average soldier would not have for arm to arm combat. They also tended to be the ones who could afford the kit and therefore of some distinction within their tribe/society. But it's a film after all and a very good one...shame Tristan had to go, but what a way to die for a soldier like him.
why did he have to die? he was my favourite knight.
@JediXful
You've got a point man.
That while old man was a fucking beast!!
they have a great internet connection up in heaven
awesome characters always tend to die.Take Boromir in lord of the rings or Hector in the Trojan war.
I dig your taste in characters
Does anyone know the name of THIS theme playing in the back, I can't find it......
"Budget Meeting" is the name of the background music.
Not really.
Some warriors in that film usually attack the more skilled opponents to eliminate the threat. That's what Tristan did.
Plot armor saves the bad guy here
Also could you post his fight with Arthur and Guinevere and Lancelot's fight with Cynric? I liked those too.
Cerdics tactics were under handed!
most charismatic knight...
@stringerboi It is Tristan not Lancelot!
he kinda looks like Aragorn from lord of the rings, and he is the one that help Perseus against Medussa
Stellan is BAD-ASS! It is an honor to die fighting him. He should have been Davy Jones in Pirates. I liked him as Bootstrap but when your like this big mountain-man dude you deserve to be on top. When he sliced Tristran in the ear you wince and jump.
going home fear no man
definitly my favorite, nice smoothe style, alway's in control, has alot of honor, fights efficiently and owns every fight, exept this one lol, witout that dagger, he'd win im sure of it, his stamina i think would have bin better , he''d wear the saxon out eventually , his style takes more time then arthus wit this saxon guy but ah well
You talking about the dagger attack?
The reason why he didn't take out the warlord in the gaps is because he's following some form of chivalry. They engage until they reach a stalemate and back off and start again. They fight until they fall and are not well enough to get up. He couldn't beat them as well as he did others coz the warlords better and stronger.
when he died the last thing he saw was his eagle that was searching him between all the people... i felt that damn pain in the throat that you feel when you can hardly hold yourself...
@buffaloackley sorry maybe i should´ve explained myself clearer: i know the classic tales of Tristan (e.g. "Tristan & Iseult"), of course the character has a profile & personality (and a very interesting one!!)
but you can´t assume that all people watching the movie know the classic tales. all they have as a reference is the Tristan in the movie, and this one´s portrayed with very limited, one-dimensional personality. he´s a tough & cool badass fighter, that´s it
the movie does him no justice
is this guy the vocalist from Amon Amarth?
Great among men was the arm of Ermaneric / even the Slavs feared his slashing
One o9f the most entertaining movies in the last 10 years...and Mikkelsen stole the show,to say the least. He pulled a Benicio in The usual suspects. But still....even within the frames of cinema we have to have some realism when it´s needed. Look at Tristans moves here before he gets injured the 1st and second time...slow like an old lady! And clumpsy swordhandling.Compare that to the ninja we see in the 1st battle who kills a woad without even looking at him. No...
Man i never understood if he was beheaded or just slashed
Does anyone know???
It seems as though he was beheaded but in the end his body is not headless
Seriously, that guy isn't the only one who can use sneaky daggers. Tristan could have easily thrown a 'sneaky dagger' into the man's skull, but he instead chose to fight honorably, but Cerdic didn't.
@Julius55555
He was taking that guy seriously, but the style that Cerdic was using was a style that Tristan wasn't used to.
i act like tristan all the time at school its so funny but anyway he was awsome he rocked the best fighter i love how he fights
oh hells yeah he's the best knight out of all of them
Hold up. I fought someone like a badass... FUCKING YES
I like him very much too (but check out Viggo Mortensen - he is also Danish and also a great fighter; these two guys seem very similar to me).
Mads - you rock.
Tristan and Marv, the two best characters in the history of cinema
I think he saw a guy with that much skill and knew the threat he posed, so he took him on. Either that, or he just wanted to face a skilled opponent for sport.
