One interesting fact is that Kim Joo-taek was already a famous opera singer at the time, and for a short time, he was KO Woorim's private vocal music teacher for his entrance into Seoul National University.(among the 12 people who made it to the finals of Phantom Singer 2, Ko Woo-rim was the youngest and the only college student)
They were individual competitors on a survival elimination show called "Phantom Singer" whose goal was to create a crossover vocal quartet like II Divo. They compete 1 v. 1, then the survivors move on to recruit for duos, then trios... and finally the Quartet. Phantom singer2 started with 32 contestants. In the preliminary producers’ audition 27 singers were selected, Doohoon and Woorim weren’t selected. (failed) To meet 32, judges selected extra 5 passers ( at 4:18 on this video) and DH and WR were chosen. After each round 4 of contestants who had lost were eliminated.( judges decided 4 to be eliminated ) In 1:1 battle MG, HH(pitta) and DH won, WR lost but survived. ( so WR had failed twice) In the trio round, high scored 3 teams could keep their teams without being disbanded and drafted by other teams. Team Trephyton(MG, DH, WR) took the third place and picked Seme to form a quartet.
Additional clarification is needed. If a match is lost, the losing team becomes a candidate for elimination. From among the eliminated candidates, successful candidates will be selected again. Those who win the competition and those who pass advance to the next mission level. I recently saw an interview with Woorim talking about his duet with Mingyu. Funny and horrifying at the same time. Apparently there was a fly in the studio and it landed on Mingyu’s neck. He felt it but thought his vein was popping. Woorim could see it and had to suppress his laughter while singing. He was already tense and then had to deal with that. He said they laughed hysterically for 30 minutes after leaving the stage. I’ve seen this whole performance. At the end you can see the fly around Mingyu’s hands. Their voices were amazing as always but you can feel the tension. ❤❤❤❤
Hyungho (PITTA) was pressured by family to get his Chemical Engineering degree. He is the only one of them without formal training. Both Mingyu and Woorim have Master’s degrees in vocal music from Seoul National University (Woorim was still in school when the show aired and finished his studies later). Doohoon studied acting at the Korean national University of the arts. The contestants that lose their round are eligible for elimination. The judges decide who is eliminated. The winning contestants then choose their next partners from the remaining ‘losers’. The first 1v1 battles always break my heart, because these guys work so hard together and form friendships, but one of them has to lose. While I love Forestory, watching the whole show of 32 very talented contestants whittled down to 12 is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. The eliminations always hit hard. Both Mingyu and Hyungho were about to give up on music. At the time this was filmed, Doohoon was 32, Hyungho was 30, Mingyu was 28, and Woorim was the youngest contestant at 23.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Mingyu didn't want to give up on music, he felt less assured on his pathway and was planning to continue his master degree abroad if he didn't auditioned for Phantom Singer.
