Hello, my family just got our puppy about four days ago. He's fourteen weeks old. Potty training has been difficult, especially here in the North East during winter. I decided to purchase a pack n play ,this has helped so much. I keep a puppy pad on one side and bedding on other side.
He always uses his puppy pads. We have one room lined with wall to wall drop cloths and puppy pads. He is free to play there. It takes constant attention to keep up with changing out pads. He is never allowed to have free roam of our home. It would not take long for him to take over with Potty messing room to room. It's important to make sure your puppy potties before breakfast. Always keep a close watch over your puppy because they will Potty many times each day. The pack n play really gives us a chance to do little bits of household chores at a time. His diet is white rice chicken tenders , carrots ,and broccoli cooked in unsalted broth. This is twice a day, with one meal of dry puppy food.

Hi, just want to remind my human counterparts that my species does not have hands. We love participating in what you call training only because you spend time with us. What matters most with "potty training" is opening the doors for us. When the weather is bad it means the world to us when you share in our pain and come outside and bear it with us.

How’s potty training going? I’ve had my Doxie a year and he knows to potty outside…knows to ring the bell to tell me…. And continues to poop in the house!!! Occasionally he’ll pee on my couch or a blanket that’s fallen to the floor too! SO FRUSTRATING!

Definitely consistency and praise. I got so good with it when he was on a leash walking around the neighborhood, but letting him out in backyard he would sniff around forever. So I had to leash him and walk in backyard, let him do his business and then let him loose. Lol.

Hello! I've had dachshunds throughout my life starting at age 4. I agree with everything you've said in this video. Several of my dachshund buddies wouldn't dream of going in the house once trained. If an accident happens, it's usually medical related and we see a vet. Thanks again for this wonderful video! And, for reinforcing to never rub their nose in it. I also enjoy your GSP videos.

For those struggling...try to develop a routine. Still currently training mine but hes gotten much, much better. Havent had an accident in over a week now. I take him out immediately after sleeping, naps, and after eating. He understands "outside" now...I also make sure to pick him up, leash him while being held, carry to the yard, and then put him down so his feet hit the same thing every time before he goes developing a feel of routine and a specific surface before he goes. I also make sure to be over the top about "goood job, good boy, yes yes yes" and in completely different tones than my "No! Bad!" I also am not afraid to give him a smack on the ass or nose if and only if I basically caught him in the act. Hes gotten so much better in the 3.5 weeks since we got him. Soon, Im going to teach him to tell me when he has to go by bringing me his leash.

  • @AN-dm7jc

    AN 23
I have a 5 month Chiweenie. 3/4 Doxie and 1/4 chihuahua. I struggled so bad I hated it!!! But I will tell you now... do not do pad training if you live in an apartment or house with predominantly Carpet! They are very stubborn to use it unless it’s clearly different than surrounding floor. Also they are a hound with great sense of smell. If you use a pad, the whole apartment just smells like pee to them! He would just go where he wanted.
I finally got rid of them because he kept going next to it, or on it once then stop when there was too much pee on it. Once I got rid of them, he basically never went inside again. Now I give him treats outside whenever he goes and praise him. No incidents. Barks when I show him the leash. Whines when he wants to go outside.
Puppy pads may work from some dogs. But I don’t think they work for doxie or doxie mix’s.

Hey Sam, thanks so much for watching! It's best to take their water off the floor an hour before bed and make sure they go to the toilet before you put them to bed. Then hopefully everyone should have a good nights sleep and they can go out in the morning and you can put their water back down. Hope everything goes well with settling your new arrival in!

6:39 Hello and thank you for the video. Had my husband watch your video where you stress consistency. We have 2 mini Dachshund puppies and my husband has been quick to dismiss putting them in an enclosed area in our fenced backyard, so I had him watch your video as well. My questions are:
Do you recommend an enclosed area in our backyard? And if so, how big should it be?
How long should we allow them in the area to go potty? And should we take them out to play in the non enclosed area?
If one pup goes, should we take that one out of enclosure and leave the other there?
If they go potty in the yard (not specifically the enclosure) how do we handle that?
Thank you for your guidance. 6:39

My 15 week old mini Doxie has been great up until this week, I let him out every few hours and he pees and poops outside, he also sleeps through the night with no accidents. I have a crate and playpen area for him but recently he started peeing randomly in the carpets, he pooped on the floor and peed last night on our couch! I was not happy and my husband was really annoyed. We love this little sweetie but I’m wondering if I should get a pine pellet litter box so I don’t have any more accidents on carpets or the floors. My husband and I both work on different days and days where we’re both working. I do have somebody coming in two times during the day and he is in his pen and he does very good on those days so I don’t know why he’s all of a sudden doing this. Please advise on a litter pan, I do have the PP pads. He hates them and runs around the house with them like they’re a toy so they’re useless to me and I don’t want to use them anyway because I feel like they use those. They think it’s OK to use the carpet.

Keep your crate next to the bed so you can hear them whimper when they wake up… as quickly as possible take them to the wherever the toilet is wait for them to go…pick them up immediately after and put back in crate. I guess I have one special dachshund! I got her (8 weeks old) 6 days ago and had her trained in 3 days. Took her out after every nap and every hour when she was awake. Now she runs to the back door and asks to go outside to do her business. I thought it would be hard but it was so easy.

We are about to get our second dachshund puppy next weekend. She will be eight weeks. I’m going to try this very strictly with her, for the time being due to her age, would I be best using puppy pads or a grass litter Dog box for her for the time being? And as she gets older, begin taking her outside? Or would I be better off taking her outside from day dot? Just worried due to her not being fully vaccinated yet. thank you for your video. Hopefully this encourages our first doxy to begin understanding a little bit more. He’s generally pretty good however he does have the occasional accident usually due to excitement. 🤍🤍

My dog does not like to eat much so I've been leaving the food out for him. We'll be moving to a schedule today. He hides the pee and poop wait so I turn my back and goes under or behind something. If I catch him he quickly eats it. He does not want me to see

I understand the rigors of house breaking a pup...but I just got a rescue 3 years old who is not house trained. She's reliably pee pad trained...but I want her to be outside trained. Little twit won't go potty in yard...I have to walk her up and down the street...which is fine in the day time but not after dark...help.

Advice on dachshund nibbling on fingers and clothing!, we have a 9 week old dachshund and he loves to nibble on fingers and loose clothing especially after he gets and treat and doesn’t get anymore. I’ve heard it’s okay to let them nibble as long as it’s not hurting you and that they will grow out of it but I have also heard to not let them nibble at all or it will become a habit! Just wondering what your opinion on it is?

I'm having a terrible time with my mini dachshund and his teething. I have bought all kinds of teething toys and tried the frozen wash cloths, etc. Nothing seems to work. My puppy is ferocious in the evening and night. He chooses to gnaw on my arms and feet. I am at the end of my rope! He is 15 weeks old at the writing of this comment. Thank you.

Hi there, my puppy was doing so well with toilet training but now he has decided to constantly use the house as his bathroom and just recently...my foot! We do all the things you suggest although as we are out for work he is in a crate but every few hours we drop in , is this a behaviour stemming from being left alone? We had a designated spot also and he does not use it any more, instead all over the tiles. Please help

Hardest thing for me is I live in an apartment, by myself with my puppy, and I work up to 10 hours a day. He then stays in his kennel/play pen when I go to work and he is used to using a pee pad. We are about to move into a house and we will have a back yard so im hoping he will do better with that. I am also curious, when he goes into his play pen area, should he have water in there with him or does it just promote going pee?

So I’m managing to get my doxie puppy to wee and poo outside but then am crating him overnight and when I come down in the morning he’s been to the toilet in there. Should I be getting up through the night to let him out? After he’s been in the crate on a night it’s always hard to get him back into the routine of going outdoors?

our puppy was house trained on pee pads by the breeder which I think is a very bad thing to do. So now I have had to take up area rugs because he would pee on them. He’s an adorable lil guy but should have done more homework on this breed. Pretty sure I would not have got him.

Every hour on the hour? So, how does this work when you need to sleep? You can't be awake all night and if you leave them in their crate over night, you will just wake up to a mess and they will be dirty because they walk in it so then you're constantly having to clean them and clean up after them every morning.
With indoor pee pads, the dachshund will just chew it non-stop. Directing its attention away with a toy does not work. It goes right back to chewing the pad. Giving it a treat after using your key word/command to get them to stop (to reward positive behaviour for stopping) also does not work. The dog goes right back to the pad after a few seconds.
If you stick the pad to the ground with adhesive, the dachshund will just chew and rip the centre of the pad. Bitter spray also doesn't work. He's not at all bothered by the taste.
He will chew the pad, you take it away to stop him chewing, then he just pees on the floor maybe a minute later.
This breed is so badly behaved and all these tips online have not worked at all. And yes, I've been consistent for days and weeks on end. Try doing this also when you're trying to work and attend meetings.
It's so irritating how videos like this just make it seem like the owners are useless or lazy and the solution is so straightforward. It's not.
