    I have this album by The Koala and your comparison with Johnny Thunders is spot in. The Koala were from New York and I'm pretty sure Thunders either owned this record or heard it somewhere because there's a song on the album which sounds a lot like "Lonely Planet Boy" and "You can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory".

    Jon, the vocals sound very gritty from the Big City, circa 1977. The ''total sound'' has the flavor of The Blues Magoos with a slight seasoning of The Rascals. Definitely in the New York City groove.

    I can hear what you mean Jon when you say it's ahead of it's time. I know you mentioned a few other bands they sound like, but I could hear a bit of the Who in there as well. It would be interesting to know if any of the punk bands had heard this album at the time and if it was an inspiration to them. Thanks for showcasing the album.

    Wow Jon! This record is like the missing link of sorts. It almost sounds like if Stiv/Thunders/Keith Moon got together and made a band. EXCELLENT album. I’d consider it proto-punk for sure. However it also straddles the 60’s garagepunk sound too.

      Yes, definite similarities to Love! No doubt this band was into Arthur Lee and boys! And yeah, Love should definitely be considered as a proto punk band, at least a few of their rockers are straight up sixties punk! Thanks for watching and leaving your opinion in the comments! Listening to this LP hear some Dead Boys 'sonic reducer. Koala bit proto-punk. Sounds early 70s psych rock meets CBGB NYC 77 meets early NY Dolls meets some Flamin' Groovies. Bit snotty, glammy but behind the Stoogies/MC5. 'She’s A Lady' cool tune. Nice pick.

      Hey Tom! Thanks for popping by!
      That’s pretty funny the genre gestapo line!! I do like trying to figure things out. Seeing which band did what first and who influenced who. And in doing that I try to put definitions and descriptions on bands and styles. But I don’t like putting bands in boxes. It’s an impossible task anyway because the lines were all blurred and most artists did different things. I bring the genre thing up often more for fun discussion and debate. Enough of my yapping, you know this bit anyway! Haha!

      Hey Randy! Thanks for watching!! What you said makes more sense, that whole pretend to not be American thing. What a weird phenomenon!! Probably started with the Strangeloves. Very nice, Jon. Definitely hear Thunders. One of those tracks also reminded me of the Dolls. I mean, some people call The Kinks proto-punk. It just depends on how far you want to go back on influences. I would call The Sonics proto-punk for sure. So, yeah, just based on the vocals alone I’d call this proto-punk. The chaotic mix adds to it as well. Maybe all credit goes to the recording engineer, lol

    • @bipbopboom
      @bipbopboom  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Jon! Thanks for stopping by!! You bring up some excellent examples!! Of course, there are no right or wrong answers here. I bring stuff up just as food for thought or debate. The whole proto-punk or proto anything could be just historians and fans trying to categorize things that happened naturally and don’t fit into the pre existing made up categories. Haha!
      And yes the rough recording and sloppy playing certainly adds to the argument! Almost hard to believe Capitol Records signed this band only a few years after having Sinatra on the roster!!
      Hope all is well Jon!! Cheers!!

    I certainly hear that collision of different eras and sounds that you are digging. Those vocals are what get ya. Very Dead Boys all the way. Very NY / CBGBs. Which is my favorite era of rock music. That scene just fascinates me endlessly. It’s almost like the vocalist was just way ahead of the rest of the band. Maybe he’s trying to push the band into a more raw direction? Is it proto-punk? I would say, absolutely. It’s almost there. One or more members of the band had a vision of a much more aggressive sound. What is interesting is that by mixing these two (or more) styles/eras together the band created something very unique and special. I really need to hear the full album all the way through. Well…Summer is almost and I need a killer rock n’ roll album for driving fast with the windows down (but the air-conditioning still on 😂). Btw. I found the reissue on Discog for $20. So why not? Great price. Thanks, Jon. Shawn.

    I definitely hear that sneer in the vocals - very cool! Already added it to my DL playlist to nab - I hear some Love influence in there as well, with the frenetic energy. But, I think if you listen to Love/Da Capo it will sound similar, and that is definitely more like angry psych than proto punk - but then again, maybe that IS proto punk as well.

      Hey Kris! Sorry for such a late reply! I’ve been slacking on RUclips. I think Love is an important name to drop when discussing this record and genre for sure! You are spot on with your opinion. To my ears when Arthur Lee gets aggressive with his vocals he makes the band sound more ‘66 garage than something from the next decade. Of course their music was way ahead of the basic garage sound. But I definitely consider Love as a contender in the proto punk category. Nit that these labels matter, it’s just for fun. Thanks for watching and dropping your opinion in the comments! Always appreciated! Hope you have a great week!! Cheers, Jon

      Hey Mikael! Thanks for watching! Much appreciate it.
      The labeling genres of bands gets messy. Some of it is probably my fault too. Haha! I think all metal bands are playing a form of hard rock. But of course all hard rock bands are not metal.
      The thing about Sir Lord Baltimore is they were the first band to be called “Heavy Metal” before there was even such a genre. It was in an early issue of hard rock magazine Creem. There were bands like Sabbath and Buffalo out a few months earlier than SLB, but they were the first band to be called Heavy Metal. There might not even be a genre called Heavy Metal without SLB. Maybe we’d be calling Iron Maiden and Saxon “High Energy or Loud Rock”. Haha! Who knows!!
      Thanks again!! Always appreciate guys who leave comments!!! You have a great week! Cheers, Jon
