based on some of the "teasing" i'd heard for this i'd decided to temper my expectations, but i am super impressed by how this is going to work!

It's really going to change how people write DAX honestly! I can't wait for it to hit general availability

@@dutchdatadude those who had spoken about the upcoming feature in other livestreams didn't seem particularly excited and called out that it was basic

@@lucasshipsides1510 that's not the read I am getting, but I have not seen all livestreams of course. It's not basic, but I am biased. If you have links, I'd love to learn!

Surprised msft didn't just acquire Inforiver to get this plus the UI/UX ready to ship

Hmm, super interesting! Thanks for the video. One thing that popped into my mind when you guys said that Visual Calcs are like shortcuts to Window Calcs. Could there be some "translate this visual calculation to window calculation" -button or "show as window calc" -translator. This way we could easily transform Visual Calculation to Window Calculation and use the Window Calculation measure in multiple visuals. Thanks for the video!

This will change reporting quite a bit, the speed benefits in some cases will be amazing.
It's fantastic to not have to iterate over data model tables/columns but an aggregation.
However, it would be useful to have visual calculations storable and reusable, just like normal measures.
Whenever you would reuse a visual calculation in a different visual the dependencies (measures/other visual calculations) would be added to the visual as well so the calculation can function.

thanks for the feedback! Our current thinking is indeed that you'd be able to copy/paste visual calcs between visuals. That action would bring over anything that the visual calc depends on onto the new visual. Does that meet your needs? Right now there is no plan for visual calcs to be stored in the model as such, although we have considering providing a way to convert a visual calc to a measure.

@@dutchdatadude I think displaying the list of visual calcs somewhere would be needed.
Otherwise how would you find such a calculation in the report to reuse it? Shouldn't have to rely on memory and checking visuals too much, in my opinion.
Could I also bring something else to your attention? It's quite cumbersome to navigate formulas when there are chained measures without using external tools.
You have to search the dependency to view it, losing time in the process.
It would be good if we could double-click a measure in the DAX editor window to open that measure.

@@In_a_stateagreed on the first thing, this is something we're thinking about. We are not working on anything related to #2 just now.

If the visual measure refers to placeholders like Value1 and Value2 (based on the measures in the values well and their order) then they could be reusable

    • @dkfromthebay

you can do this in the new query view. Right click on a measure reference and select Define and it puts the dax for that measure in the query editor

Visual Calculations - OMG I usually do this manually for my more complex data visualisations, if not for my own design/debugging but this will also help with user testing and data validation processes. When will you flip the switch on this one for us to see and use?

in the name of all that is good and holy, please remove the background music from your livestreams. it is an extraneous embellishment, and distracts from your otherwise solid core content.

I appreciate the honest opinion of it being extraneous to you. I get people on both sides people who enjoy it, and others who want it removed.
Personally as the host I prefer to keep it in as it helps fill in dead space when there is potential tech issues, or waiting on stuff to load. Which at 115+ streams hosted, has happened. Following similar practices that Adam and Patrick do on Guy in a Cube with each stream they do :)
