  • Vicksburg Mississippi is not what they say it is. Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the US. I always hear that some of the towns in Mississippi are really run down. I fell in love with this one. It's just a quaint beautiful town with charm and history.
Vicksburg, Mississippi is a historic city located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The city was founded in 1811 by Newitt Vick, a Methodist minister and entrepreneur, and was named after him. In its early years, Vicksburg was primarily a trading post for farmers and merchants in the region.
During the Civil War, Vicksburg played a significant role in the Confederate war effort. The city was strategically located on a high bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, which made it an important defensive position. Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant launched a campaign to capture Vicksburg in 1863, and after a lengthy siege, the city surrendered on July 4, 1863. The capture of Vicksburg was a major turning point in the war, as it gave the Union control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in two.
After the war, Vicksburg underwent a period of reconstruction and development. The city became a major center for cotton trading and other agricultural industries, and its population grew rapidly. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Vicksburg experienced a boom in river transportation and trade, as well as the construction of railroads and highways.
Despite its growth and prosperity, Vicksburg also experienced racial tensions and violence throughout the 20th century. The city was a center of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, and was the site of several significant protests and demonstrations. Today, Vicksburg is a thriving city with a rich history and culture. It is home to numerous historic sites and museums, including the Vicksburg National Military Park, which commemorates the Civil War siege and battle.

People in Vicksburg have a big heart. I was born there; I went to Alcorn for 1 1/2 yrs. I plan to visit my hometown in December. I was the first African American page at the military cemetery when I was 14 yrs old. That city holds a lot of my history.

Visit the battkefield park. I used to go there yearly as a young kid, and many years later toured the park with my wife and young son. I was surprised to see so many African Americans there, and learned from speaking with several of them that Vicksburgh holds an important place in history for them because they consider it part of the history and birth of their own freedom since it was the point at which the tide changed for the south, and it was clear that the north would win the war. As a major fan of rock and blues I have to mention the importance of highway 61 which was the main route from New Orleans to Chicago traveled by the old bluesmen in the 30's and 40's. It makes me so sorrowful to know how much history is slowly crumbling and falling into decay and that young people today, both black and white, have so little knowledge of it. I've known black youngsters who can quote word for word the lyrics of the latest rap tune, but have no idea who Lynn Swan, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, Shirley Ann Jackson, or W.E.B. Dubois are. The white kids are just as bad locked upstairs in their rooms glued to their phones and gaming monitors. Is evolution running backwards?

This was great to see. I was the only piano tuner that lived there from 1987 to 2008. (8 years total - three different times.) I would drive my bicycle down into the center area of town for exercise most days. So pleasant. The old courthouse area is interesting too.

Nice. My wife and I are going to visit Vicksburg this July. I have never been there and am looking forward to seeing it. Along the way, we will stop in Tallahassee and Mobile. We will see the USS Alabama and then drive on to Vicksburg,. From there we we will drive to Poverty Point, Louisiana to an ancient Indian mound. It will be a fun trip.

It’s a shame. It’s ruining cities and towns. It’s all over. Hopefully it doesn’t get as bad as California, Chicago or New York.

Just watched your visit to Vicksburg. I’m from Leland north of there on Hwy 61. Visited there often when growing up. Was wondering why you didn’t go to the Vicksburg National Military Park. It is the biggest draw to Vicksburg as far as tourists are concerned. Did you not see it or did you decide to leave it out?

Thank You for the tour ... just a great relaxing video too, loved it. I've been around Mississippi passing through many times, love how laid back it is, it's just soothing, folks have that special hospitality to them, the spirit is good, etc. I lived in the large cities all my life, simply for money and jobs ... nothing in any city can compare to the tranquility of a town like Vicksburg. Even though I live in a flashy popular city (Dallas), I envy those who live in Vicksburg and towns like it 🟪
