At first i thought this guy rambles on too much and takes a long time to get a point across. I then settled down and just listened and i’ll be damned he has lots of great points with plenty of real world supportive data from his experiences and it’s worth listening to completely. Great video. Thanks.

I use Asolo Fugitive GTX for over 4 year as a daily shoes, i work as a ambulance man and i needed a pair of GORE TEX's shoes that can go everywere with extra confort.
I use to go hiking on vacation or on sundays also.
After 4 years, the Goretex system begins to no longer be effective, remember that I have been using them on wet and snowy roads every season of the year for 4 years now.
This pair of shoes is for me the best purchase I have made in terms of shoes.
If I had only used them for vacation hikes or Sunday hikes, they could easily have lasted 4 more years.

Fantastic review, I started off with Montrail Moraines for 10 years, they went out of business, so I switched to wearing Vasque ST. Elias now for 10 years and love them, like you I have wide feet, and im having a problem finding the wide sizes in the Vasque so now im going with the Asolo Fugitives as well, picking them up at REI, like you love hiking here all over New England and looking forward to breaking in the Asolos im sure will be great, all the very best.

Just grabbed a pair of Asolo Eiger boots for winter off of REI. Hard to find much information on Asolo as a company but they look super legit when it comes to winter hiking. Thanks for the reference. I use a similar thought process when it comes to selecting footwear for a hike. I prefer the toe strap sandals though. Have gotten a few good summers out of those.

I bought a pair of Fugitives 3 weeks ago and so far I’m loving them. Yeah I know what’s a chick buying mens boots for. Well I’m an amputee so I need the clearance they design in mens boots to get my prosthetic foot inside. It’s hard to find a women’s fully gusseted bolt that had enough room to angle in my foot without having to bend and fold the boot.
Up to this point I’ve been doing all my hiking using a pair of Saucany Peregrine Gor-Tex trail runners. They work but offer no protection on the sharp rocks. While I love their weight I needed something a bit more stout. Enter the Fugitive. First thing that drew me to them other then it looked like I could get my foot into them was their weight, while it’s not a trailrunner they definitely are lighter than the Asolo 520GV’s I had bought a year or so before my amputation. While I do miss them the weight of the boot+prosthetic would be crazy heavy, however my girlfriend has no issues with them so my old boots became her new boots.
So far my usage has been limited to some short (less than 4 hour) day hikes along the front range in the area around Golden CO. Impressions so far is good. They offer great stability especially on the downhills and the weight is barely noticeable. My only complaint is I really need to buy the same boot in a smaller size for my right “meat” foot, buying footwear when your an amputee is a compromise. I’m a broke bitch and can’t afford to buy 2 pairs of the same boots just in different sizes. The difference is noticeable but what can ya do.
Anyway great video love what your doing and hopefully see y’all in the trails.

Very prone to hydrolysis due to cheap poly midsole. The ONLY way I sort of repaired the start of cracks in the midsole was to let it dry completely, clean with isopropyl alcohol. Slather aquaseal SR all into the poly midsole cracks and completely cover any midsole foam with the aquaseal SR to bind it from further disintegration. Shoe Goo peels and DO NOT work. Wear a p95 mask for the fumes. Annoying to do but has worked for 2 weeks without disintegrating more so far. You should do this if you buy it new too. 3/5 shoe.

I found out by stretching the boots for one night is not enough coz it will rebound back…could be because it’s not all leather…..you need to do it for 2 nights straight . But of course for someone who is truly wide getting the wide version will feel the best.

Had an Asolo Gobaline GTX years ago. It was a weird looking boot with a pulley lacing system which attracted me to it. It was fine until the midsole started to crumble and break apart and the outsole completely separated from the boot. Thankfully, I wasn't on a hike when it started to fail, but it was embarrassing trying to walk home with the soles of my shoes flopping about. I wasn't happy since they weren't cheap and there were plenty of tread left. Couple of years ago I thought I'd try Asolos again and got the Fugitive GTX. They're great in every way a quality hiking boot should be, but once again the midsole has started to crumble and disintegrate with the outsole starting to separate. Maybe I just have the worst luck with Asolos? I have a Gore-Tex leather boot from EMS that is well over a decade old. It is no doubt worn, but I can still use it as a daily beater around town.

I found the Asolo a bit narrow but a well made boot all the same. They looked pretty awesome. A wide size in 13.5 US wasn't available when I looked.
I eventually settled on Scarpa Mescalito Trks as a "do it all" boot for everything more serious than a coastal stroll but less serious than winter alpine use. I have Zodiac Tech and Manta Tech for when I need crampons so I guess Scarpa just fit me well.

Great boots, and a very good review. I've seen other reviews with some misinformation in them, which is a shame.
For all the people who posted about the soles coming off, that's due to hydrolysis. It is NOT a QC problem. The midsole is made of polyurethane. Polyurethane is susceptible to hydrolysis (dry rot). When they're unused, water gets trapped in the pores and breaks down the polyurethane. You avoid this by using them. It's counter-intuitive, but the more you wear the boots, the longer they will last because movement keeps the polyurethane from breaking down.
These are some very comfortable boots. They do run narrow, which is good for my B/C width feet. They are very snug in the heel and midfoot, and the toebox is not very wide. They have excellent shock absorption, thanks to the polyurethane midsole. They're insanely supportive (once you throw in a worthy insole), which adds to the comfort. The firm midsole makes you feel very grounded, like you're a part of the earth. They're not flexible, at all, so if you like a light, flexible boot, these are not for you. They're rigid and a bit on the heavy side, but they don't actually feel that heavy when they're on your feet. I had major surgery on my right hip a year ago, and I have five anchors holding everything together. These boots are supportive and rigid enough that they can support my leg and keep it from shifting around too much, preventing a lot of pain. They're very, very supportive.
The insoles they come with are worthless. They provide no cushioning or support. I use either Tread Labs Pace or Superfeet Green. Warning: Superfeet insoles can CUT THROUGH GORE-TEX! The edges of the plastic support can tear through the liner. You have to decide if you want to risk it. I need the support because I have a connective tissue disorder, and my arches collapse. It's not guaranteed that the Superfeet will cut through the liner. Superfeet Green are the safest and least likely to cut through the Gore-Tex. If it does cut through, you can always use Shoe Goo or Gear Aid to patch it, though.
They have excellent traction on pretty much every surface. They're not great on ice, but not many things are. I'm not sure why, but they're extremely slippery on every surface at first. After a few miles, however, they're very grippy.
The waterproofing is grand. These will definitely keep your feet dry. I've had no issues with that.
Breathability is really good considering all the heavy-duty materials used. The Gore-Tex liner does its job, keeping them waterproof while remaining breathable. They're cool enough for summer, but they're insulated well enough that you can use them for winter with the right socks. With Darn Tough mountaineering socks, I've used these in 3°F weather, and my feet stayed warm and comfortable.
They take awhile to break-in -- about 15-20 miles for me. During the break-in, my heels slip a bit, and they aren't the most comfortable. Keep at it, though, and they'll become very comfy boots.
Sizing. This one threw me for a loop for awhile. Thank God for REI's return policy. The sizing is about equivalent to Converse. These run long and narrow. Just like Chuck Taylors. If you wear a 10 in Converse, try a 10 in these first. If you're coming from something like Saucony or Adidas, try a 10.5. It's extremely important that you get the right size in these. I have a very rare connective tissue disorder and extra bones in my feet that cause my arches to collapse and my feet to elongate and pronate. This makes it insanely hard to find shoes that fit. These, however, with Superfeet Green insoles, provide enough support to prevent my arches from collapsing and my foot from expanding.
Overall, these are great boots. Rigid, supportive, firm, narrow, shock-absorbant, waterproof, breathable, comfortable... To top it all off, they look great, too! Personally, I like the Light Black/Grey color scheme best.
Get a pair of Asolos and touch grass. You'll be glad you did.
    P.S. It's pronounced ah-SO-low.

  • @BlackPilledWhite

I love mine but I would recommend if you have a full 10.5 foot then go with EE width because the traditional D width is narrow and because they are so sturdy they can be tight across the top of the foot. I still really like them though and the waterproofing is pretty amazing.

Great review on the boot .. I would agree that most important part of your hike whether it’s technical or non technical will be the fit ... volume of your foot should match the boots volume , especially when purchasing a bigger boots.. fugitive is one of Asolo’s iconic boot .. it’s a wonderful approach boot to any big climbs , it carries weight well, still not a heavy boot and being semi Rigit torsionally with a bit flex at forefoot makes it a great long distance boot to walk and still keep that ankle safe on technical routes.

@@FinerBub I haven't used them for a while but I have been using wider shoes and now the Asolos are a little cramped in the toe area. I don't really have wide feet but my toes have widened out. I just discovered this problem since my first comment. The wide version obviously widens the forefoot area but is there also a bit more room for your toes nearer the front? I've looked at other boots but I like everythig else about the Fugitives so would rather not get different boots. I would have to order the wide ones from the net.

    • @FinerBub
      @FinerBub  3 года назад

My feet grew in length from size 11w to 12w. It’s not that the 520s didn’t work for me. They were great until they didn’t fit. Once I finally got rid of that smaller pair of 520s, the fugitives were available in wide sizes so I decided to just get those in 12w instead of the 520s in a 12w

Are there any like these with toe protection. I've never seen this covered and how important this is when hiking.

Not that I know of. I think a flexible toe is probably more important while hiking

I like my wide models. The key is to tie ‘‘em tight and then walk through a few puddles to loosen up the fabric

@@FinerBub well... most well made boots run thermoplastic shank through the midsole giving it rigidity which in turn supports your movement, so rigid boots are less stressful on your knee or calf ... softer non rigid boots have too much flex and you are working harder and tiring.. hope that helps a bit

Don't be fooled, these boots are overpriced junk. Mine were comfortable and felt sturdy when I bought them. I stored them for about 4 years between about three hikesTHEN THE SOLES DELAMINATED while walking in wet grass. Just google Asolo junk.

Out of curiosity then. What's your #1 pick of hiking boot or boot that falls into this category?

    • @Rannerdale
      @Rannerdale 2 дня назад +1

@cheekyxmaverick8596 Hi. The best boots I have used were a Meindl boot made for Cabelas in the United States. Cabelas was bought out and no longer stocks any Meindl boots, but there is now a Meindl boot called Ohio, coincidentally, and it's very similar to those made for Cabelas. I bought a pair and I have just worn them in very wet weather in England's Lake District. They kept my feet dry and were very comfortable. I adapt my boots by adding an insole that has had the toes part cut off. Toes just drop into that space. Feels great. Best of luck!
