The Unbearable Beauty of the Night Sky

- Take a DEEP BREATH before watching this ESOCast mashup with Dr. J. The Sun is setting behind Cerro Paranal in the Chilean Atacama desert. While astronomers get ready to observe with ESO's Very Large Telescope, Nature prepares for her own grand display. As night falls over the desert, the southern sky reveals its nocturnal beauty, leaving the spectator in silent amazement. Some people, however, don't just stare at the spectacle. With great skill, they record these unique moments for everyone to see - they are the photographers of the night.
Anyone who has been up at night in a remote, high place such as at one of ESO's observatories in Chile may have been lucky enough to experience the splendid view of the myriad stars shining brightly from the heavens. It is a both a dream and a challenge for a photographer to capture an image of this incredible view. Today we will focus on three ESO staff members, who, during their free time, produce outstanding astrophotography. By publishing their results on the internet they share their enthusiasm for the astonishing wonders of the southern skies with a wider audience.
Yuri Beletsky is an ESO Fellow and astronomer at the Paranal Observatory.
When not observing with the world's most advanced telescope, the VLT, he actively lives out his passion for taking pictures of the southern sky.
"I like the night sky, I like stars and the night sky is so beautiful, you can see millions of stars and astrophotography is the best way to show the people what actually stars are, so taking this picture I share my passion with people and I am showing the sky then."
Over time, Yuri has produced many spectacular images of Paranal against the wonderful backdrop of the night sky.
A laser beam shooting out of one of the VLT _s Unit Telescopes.
The bright constellation of the Southern Cross.
The Pipe Nebula with its picturesque dust lane crossing the Milky Way.
Sunlight reflected by small particles of dust lying in between the planets causes the faint zodiacal light.
Paranal is an ideal site for astrophotographers as it offers crystal-clear, extremely dark skies with perfect weather conditions on about 320 nights per year.
Gerhard Hüdepohl, an electronic engineer at Paranal knows about the photographic benefits of the VLT _s site.
Gerhard, who is also a renowned photographer of Chile's landscape, combines the beauty of the Atacama desert with the shining Milky Way in a unique way.
"My favourite type of photography is landscape photography and in particular images of the landscape at night, showing the Milky Way in the night sky here in the Atacama desert. And here at Paranal I can have the telescopes as a nice foreground and the stars and the night sky as a background".
The bright plane of our Milky Way as it arches above the VLT. An image like this can only be obtained under top-notch stargazing conditions, such as those offered at Paranal.
Like Yuri, Gerhard has also produced a spectacular series of images showing the VLT with its laser beam and the night sky.
"I am always trying to show Paranal from new, fresh points of view, different angles, different times of the day, so I am always thinking about new ideas. So that is my plan for the future".
Astrophotography is very demanding. The photographer has to stay out in the dark and in the chill of the night for many hours. Sometimes it can take several nights of painstaking work in these tough conditions to obtain just one image and the equipment must always function flawlessly.
Stéphane Guisard is the head of the optical group at Paranal. His astrophotography benefits from his professional expertise as an optical engineer specialising in telescopes.
"I take pictures of galaxies and nebulae with a telescope, but I also like to take wide-field images of the sky with a terrestrial foreground. I like to share the beauty of the sky and the Universe with people."
This photographic mosaic of the central parts of our galactic home is just one example of Stéphane's work. Taken with an amateur telescope coupled to a CCD camera, the image combines about 1200 photos for a total exposure time of around 250 hours.
Stéphane has also produced a spectacular series of timelapse sequences at the Paranal site. Producing such sequences is quite a challenge as the images must be taken at regular intervals, and all the parameters must match perfectly to obtain the sensation of the moving firmament.
There is no doubt that Yuri, Gerhard and Stéphane will continue to produce stunning images of the starry skies above Paranal. The wonderful quality of the images is a testament to the splendour of the night sky at ESO's Paranal Observatory. By sharing their work, these three astrophotographers have brought their magnificent view of the southern sky to a wider audience. - Наука
Seeing night sky full of stars while lying down on grass on top of a mountain is on top of my bucket list
same
I spent 3 summers on top of a mountain, and would lay down for hours at night to watch the stars (and the occasional shooting star). It's just as breathtaking as you think.
It is one of the most calming things on earth.
Yup same here
Same
Go to Mongolia then.
Anyone else just lay on the ground, or in bed, staring out at the night sky marveling at all the stars and just feeling butterflies. And then the sudden realization that our world is so small, and that our struggles and all our hard working seems so insignificant in this massive universe of ours? I do. I do this like once every six months or so, I just stare out at the stars and get lost in the worlds above me, and just think of all that could be out there, all those planets, all that life force.
Its ong of the best feelings
+Anton Nzl That is because we are insignificant. In the grand sacle of the universe we are as nothing. Perhaps one day, when we can travel amognst the stars, that will change.
i do it everyday
Jesus cares. that why he said cast all your anxiety on him. Who ever is reading this. Yea you. Go and watch pastor todds video called what must I do to get saved. He describes how to repent. It will be the best decision you've ever made.
Anton Nzl It makes you feel so tiny when looking at them
I'll probably cry if I see this. This is so beautiful 😢
Imagine making love under this beautiful sky of God....

Can't we just switch off all the city lights for just one night per month? What if we pick a certain date so we can all enjoy the night.
With cars this will be almost impossible, but I mean, there is not that much traffic on a mid-night weekend?
If we could just come together and make this a real thing!
Just like there is this Movember. Why not "starry sky night" every 3rd sunday night of the month.
Let me know your thoughts. Lets get together and make it official.
Mike loves raves There was a black out in Seattle one time I believe ( Or L.A). The bright stars were there but people were scared :/
Moon doggie do you have one by any chance ?
Moon doggie a City wide EMP will send your ass a good 5+ years in prison
I would LOVE to see this happen. Let the beauty of the stars light up the once light-polluted city sky!
Mike L I don't think it's the light that affects how the sky looks, it's the pollution that we produce that is causing a blanket of chemicals and dark smog that is not allowing us to see to the sky
This just fills me with tears. The night Sky is truly so beautiful, it upsets me that I can't see this in New York every night.
The price of being a New Yorker ruining the lives of those who enjoy bushcraft.
Oh my God, that night sky, I'd pay anything to see that kind of sky.. Beautiful.
Ben Dover you can, find a good rural place that is away >8 km from any city
***** I highly doubt that this kind of night sky would appear where I live, becouse I live so far north and in a very quiet small town, still nothing like this. If im very lucky I will see Aurora borealis but thats it, nothing like this :(
Come Let's go to paranal then!
WhatDidYouSay 145
It isn’t anything like that where there is a star in every nook and cranny. However, it is still beautiful as I see more stars at home than in the cities, although, the yanks development has made it grow dimmer with each passing day.
If you’d really be down for it:
Get into camping and bushcraft, get a Bush gun in case you’re stupid and mess with a bear or something, and go camping in places in the Midwest like Kansas, the Dakotas, or Montana.
Do this until you get enough experience to go on a small trip with friends (alone camping is retarded and might get you killed) to Alaska.
Another odd one was my dad saw the sky like that in the navy, they surfaced the Sub some few hundred miles away from Hawaii, and it was complete darkness and the lit up night’s sky.
So if anyone is in the navy, you’ll have that to look forward towards one day
you can just drive to a dark sky reserve.
I personally have never seen the sky look like this, but I have been to certain deserts and really dark shore lines and it is wonderous. The sky is heavy with stars. It has an effect on your soul, I believe. The milky way is very pronounced. Very hypnotic. You don't know what you are missing.
True!
Our universe, and all it's *stars, galaxies, planets, and nebula's are so beautiful. I love how mysterious it is.*
It breaks my heart to know that I'll probably never experience such beauty with my own eyes.
I experienced it with my own eyes. For 20 seconds. And it was beyond amazing. I was at a cabin with no cities for 50 miles. Hard to get there but so worth it
Sara Connor why only 20 seconds?
Because it was cold in upstate ny and i was a teenager and my mother rushed me inside the cabin. Wish i would have said to her "Hey,give me a minute! LOOK UP!
Why not? There are plenty of Dark Sky Parks out there to experience :D
Thirty ought Six I've seen dark skies plenty of times but there was always a block of flats obscuring this part and another block of flats obscuring that part, or if I was really lucky a tall hill and a clump of trees. What I was left with would be a narrow strip of the sky with only the brightest stars and planets being visible instead of the whole glorious canopy like in this video.
i wish we could all shut off Every light on earth so we could experience the night sky for 1 night
me too
Julian Puffer i never saw clear sky in my entire life. this is why i agreed on this comment. I cannot imagine how it would look like, the only thing i can do is to search for low res pictures on the internet.
I think we should start using more efficient lighting systems (like led lamps, directional light, etc) and keep it as much as we can from escaping to the rest of the atmosphere.
unfortunatelly its impossible
same
yea it's called the purge.
If I lived in a place like this, I don't know how I would ever sleep!
I don't think you would stay awake... Looking at that beautiful night sky would make you feel relaxed... You might not know it you're already asleep...
You usually have hard labor to do the next day like farm work.
I hate light pollution :(
Derick Dasilva Ikr!! I have to travel to Thailand to see the milky way for the first time.Might not but I am pretty excited.I hope you saw or get to see the milky way too.
I hate light pollution too. When the first time I saw the Milky way, out from my cars window, I was dumbstruck to the view!!!! I saw it for straight 20 mins without looking down.
You know some parts of France are rural enough to remain unpolluted by light
this summer i'm going on a holiday to an island and one night i'm gonna go watch the night sky to see all the beautiful stars and some other day back home i'm gonna cylce 50km with some friends to a "national' park to see the night sky as well and we'll probable "sleep there" and swim in the lakes i'm so excited
I want a worldwide blackout to happen!!!
I love the night sky so much. Even if I can only see a couple stars I'm still fascinated. And it is cloudy here often so I don't see the, that much. I just live the cool night are and I'm just starring up at the sky with all the start wondering why this can't happen every night. It's just too amazing to say in words.
Just think about it space lovers ... u play interstellar background music in your headphones , laydown and watch the beautiful sky !!
As I watched this i had shivers going up my spine and tears of joy flowing from my eyes. I just want to say thank you tho the dedicated and hard working scientist, engineers, editors, and all other persons (whom I wish I could name) that worked on making this video and other videos like this one possible. Seeing this type of spectacle with my own eyes is definitely on my bucket list.
chris ce guess I'll have to get a telescope than
chris ce noted. Thanks mate 👍
chris ce haha, I will
Utterly, absolutely & unbelievably majestic. Thank you gentleman. Fascinating. Incredibly beautiful. God bless you 🙏
such a beautiful thing to see, if only I could just visit the place for just one night to see it with my own eyes. Wow
it's hard to believe such an incredible sight is hiding behind the sky every night.
Oh my God!! I had goosebumps throughout the video!!! Its just remarkable!!!
Really? Try seeing that in real life! Not on an electronic screen. I only saw it for like 20 seconds but it was epic.
I can only imagine!! Lol
Yeah. Just need to find country space. Too much light drowns out the stars
Darshay Holden its light pollution it blocks out the stars light
Michael Sullivan I know! That's what draws me into the beauty if the whole world! The stars, the creatures under the ocean ...nature...its all too beautiful and too perfect...and is the amazing work of God!
Seeing night sky full of stars while lying on the grass with my favourite person is my dream 😍
My god I'd love to this in real life!
.
Thank you to the photographers that bring us these images. As a city dweller, I seldom have the opportunity to see the night sky as I remember it.
How great is the Glory of our Lord!!
I hate light pollution :(
I'll probably cry if I see this. This is so beautiful 😢
It is really a amazing feeling to see it in real
I remember being 11 years old and seeing the night sky in a remote village in my native country. Couldn't believe what I was seeing, being raised in a city all my life. This was 11 years ago and I don't think I'll ever forget it.
One day i will see the stars like this....
the music is from the album wavestar, moonwind, the track is called for the whales.
hope this helps
Thanks sir for your info! You are a lifesaver! Wherever you are stay well & classy! 👍
I love looking at the stars while listening a sad music
Same
The night sky is such a beautiful thing. Its also very calming to watch. Feels like the real thing in front of you nice HD definition. :)
This is Natural Beauty, I would really really love to the sky like that, we should have a 2hr long blackout so people can see the sky's natural beauty.... I hate city lights
One of my wishes is that on my birthday, (April 10th) every year, the whole world would have no power for a day.
@@elsamoonlight1357 thats bad millions of people would die in your birthday because of life support just for a night sky
and how would we see inside of homes and flashlight and fire exists so people would still find a way to ruin it
so this would be very bad people would think your birthday is bad
It is so crazy that the world is so big and full of beauties like this and yet some of us haven't seen them yet. I still want to see a clear night sky where I can see the stars clearly.
We need to go to atacama lol
subhanaAllah
While on vacation last september we visited Paranal and other smaller observatories in central Chile. I must say the night sky is so dark and beautiful just like in this video. I saw the zodiacal light and the megalanic clouds just to name a few, unforgetable.
to bad we cant see this beauty because of the light pollution
Everytime i see such videos, i am speechless. I really have to visit a very dark location too see with my own eyes.
I live in Mississippi, and the sky is always pitch black. I want to live someplace where the sky is like this! I can't even see the friggin moon!!! There's like one star in the sky every night!
light polluted
Well technically your sky is actually to bright rather than dark.
As the light pollution is drowning out the stars.
That's better than India , it's just pitch black without anything
What I wouldn't give to witness such stunning beauty, and to actually see the Milky Way in the night sky. Oh I'd stay up all night just starring in the sky. I'd cry from happiness
i feel pitty for people that live in la or ny
+Generic Username (Victor Engel) During the blackout in 1994 in LA, people were literally terrified of mystic lights in the sky, some even called 911 to learn that they were looking at their home galaxy
***** yup, there were images taken during the blackout, check them out. We should have an "International Astronomy Night", the night when all lights go out to enable up look up at the sky in awe
Siddharth Nair some people die without ever seeing the beauty of the milky way
***** me too :/
***** Generic Username well, you guys did see this video
I remember seeing the night sky like this for the first time when I was in Ireland three years ago. It brings up a feeling inside you that's so strange to comprehend, it's like you realise how small you are. How small everyone you know is, and how small our entire planet is. You'd think a feeling like this would depress you but it doesn't, for some reason it gives you a sense of awe. Honestly I would rather sit and stare at the sky like this for ten hours than sit inside on my play station for hours. Such an immense feeling
To God be the GLory
Amen
Few things are as glorious as the night sky, it reminds us of how insignifcant we are in the grand scheme of things, and that beauty is never more than a look upwards away.
I wanna get Lost Between Thoes Star
I went as far away as i could from any city this weekend...100 kilometers into the nature as a matter of fact...i camped in a plain for the entire weekend...brought a beach chair and sat there all night it's really amazing what we miss with all these city lights...in the middle of nowhere you can litteraly see the milky way and thousands of stars...and if you like looking at the sky with a telescope then you MUST try it far away from the cities. It's just too wonderful to explain
did you know that if you see a star slowly moving, its not a star. its a satelite.
Ørjan Jensen Not always, shooting stars are real. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intergalactic_star

I'm still hunting the music name! If you figured it out already please let me know sir
Watching this, you learn to realize the true beauty of this endless universe..
Open your eyes people.. The videogames and smartphones and reality shows do not represent true enjoyment..
These only entertain your mind for a short period of time..
To entertain - no, rather to caress your heart with joy, watch the beauty of nature..
God has blessed this world with such beauty and magnificence..
And here we are trying to satisfy our need for petty entertainment by gluing ourselves to screens..
Can you go here as a tourist ?
I really want to go there.
Got to see the sky like this.
Atacama desert in Chile you can visit there the best Tripp I have ever made.
Fantastic.
Thank you Claudia.
Isn't it amazing?! Oh my Lord! Your Creation is beyond description! Can i just only for one night spend my time up above where the stars live? 😢 Gosh the universe is sooooo amazing at night!!!😱 Here in the Philippines, i already memorized the same spot where those stars will appear every night. Unfortunately for tonight, there aren't as many stars as the sky is cloudy. Love love love to those who also love the night sky full of twinkling stars. 😇😍😘
I know this is amazing, hope i visit atacama someday lol
My Family doesnt like night time cause its too dark
But what I see is this...
I live in northern Minnesota and at night i love to go out and lay under the night sky because its so peaceful and beuatiful especially in an open field where the sky is so clear. I love watching the stars with a girl in my arms too.
Maybe if people see the sky like this people would probably cut back on using electricity
nah more like all outside lights would be removed
Look at all those stars ...the day I see the milky way and magellanic clouds up above me will be the best ever !
how come I have never seen such sky? I understand that it is almost impossible in urban regions, but my town is small and I live on outskirts.
ljuc The light from the cities surrounding doesn't allow you to have such a view, there has to be like no citties in many square miles for you to be able to
ljuc Field lights, traffic, and general city lights are light pollution. the only time I have ever seen the Milky Way in my 19 years was in a canyon in a far West Texas desert... incredible sight.
When i am seeing Black night Sky with full of Shining Stars .. And same time Wind Blow with a beautiful Smell ,is Touched My Heart My Soul also. ..that moments i feel i am live ..i feel relaxed :-)
I love that time .. When i am alone .. I love to feel nature and me that Time...

Glory be to Allah Almighty ☝❤
I’ve seen this view in Rum desert with naked eye I was in shock it’s so beautiful
Can this be seen by naked eyes
abhishek das yes if there is no light around you. You cam
With less exposure ofc, but generally the answer is yes.
Asgard Ragna cool
Asgard Ragna "with less exposure"
That sounds like a no.
Not this bright tho. Cameras are much more light sensitive than human eyes
Seeing the stars decorating the night sky like this has been one of my dreams. I've tried going to remote and high places, but I got no luck since all places at night were cloudy when I visited them. I live in the city, so it's really rare to see more than at least five stars in the sky. I really hope I can get to see this nocturnal beauty one day.
Seeing this makes my feel like i am nothing ...

I hope I can have a decent astrophotographic camera in somewhere there are no light, just to see the beautiful night sky.
Discovering the whole of the universe is like an ant trying to travel the whole of the USA. It's sad to come to terms with it! But that's the beauty of it ... if you don't discover everything, the more interested you get... and that's what Astronomy / Science is all about! This is how our ancient civilization started and look where we are now!!! Inquisitiveness is so powerful!!
love ESO and the projects they publish for people to see!!
this is my dream. When I am under a sky in summer, I Feel that I am at my place as a human. I know who I am and I become humble. In the city, we forget that we are less than a grain of sand. Cheers to all the dreamers
i had no idea you could see a nebula so clearly like that across the sky! its beautiful

Ive lived in Phoenix, AZ most of my life. the skies in the city are blocked by all the light, but around Phoenix lies vast empty deserts, and i have ventured out to see the spectacular stars and meteor showers out there many time. There are still places where the light of the Milky Way is so bright you have a faint shadow cast by its light.
Had it not been for my love of art, I would have loved to do this. I'm just dying to get to see my first starlit night. Truly brings a tear to my eye that I haven't had an opportunity to do so.
I would love to watch the southern skies from a location like Paranal. Watching this in full - screen is nice, but viewing such a sky from an observatory like this would be a fantastic memory to accompany me the rest of my life.
So powerful, you need the song 'counting stars' one republic to go to this brought a tear to my eye.

Wow this is amazing! Thank you so much for uploading!
you know, i have relatives that didn't know they have an opportunity to experience and enjoy the beauty of a true night sky. I was so happy for them that i begged them to at least once in their lifetime watch these natural wonders as they are rare ocassions and i even told them the nearest location to visit. They rejected saying it was too far to travel, they didn't feel like it, etc. I got so mad 'cause its really something i feel we all need to do and I haven't yet been able to watch this! :(
What an amazing place to live / work
Back when I lived in Africa this is all you could see at night, not light pollution, while we sat outside and talked and sat around the fire, the good ole days. Go somewhere remote for once and witness a sky like this and I promise you this, you'll wanna stay
Wow! In my town, even in a night sky without any clouds, I can barely see 10-20 stars, let alone the Milky Way! I wish I could travel to a place with a clean sky...
When the power went out in the east coast I stayed out till 3am. I live on Long Island. The nights sky was the most beautiful thing I've seen, next to my kids of course. I could swear i saw things moving up there.
See the night sky in the middle of the ocean from the deck of a blacked out war ship at 2 in the morning, amazing.

wow the stars and the night sky are beyond belief beautiful i only just took my dog for a walk earlyer and it took me ages because i noticed the stars in the sky and couldnt stop staring at how beautiful they were
Amazing...the sky spins above you, there in Alaska.
Makes you kind of want to go there yourself and experience the phenomenon.
Well.
Considering that its the Earth that is the one moving.... Right?
Its Beautiful.
if only more people could gaze at such a beautiful nightsky then they would be truly in awe and maybe rethink some things...
