  • Oh great, the "youtube video fail" bug is back again, giving you a blurry version! Original clear video at joumxyzptlk.de/tmp/microsoft/... ...
Short answer: Outlook 2000 not due to missing IE4 / IE5, maybe there is a workaround, but not today :D.
Long: A discussion made me crating this video to prove it works :D.
Extra: You can replace the clippy, I took the dolphin and Saeko from a Japanese Office version.
Extra2: How to UNINSTALL the widget trash: (Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online).Where({$_.DisplayName -eq "MicrosoftWindows.Client.WebExperience"})[0] | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -AllUsers

Neat! I wonder if the ancient After Dark Games will carry over? It survived to Win10 64 bit so I imagine odds are good.

Outlook 98 to 2003 relied on the Active Desktop and Web Integration components of Internet Explorer versions 4, 5, 5.5 and 6, and of course wouldn't work properly on Windows 11.
In addition Outlook 2007 was revamped to remove the reliance of Internet Explorer, as Office 2007 was released in 2006 around the same time that Windows Vista was released. In addition, the Active Desktop feature was removed with the release of Internet Explorer 7 that same year, and the browser was no longer integrated into Windows Explorer and this can also be seen in Windows XP and Server 2003 of either Internet Explorer 7 or 8 is installed.

Thank you for clearing that up! I simply did not invest the time to try to make it work since it was unsure whether it was possible anyway. From your description: Probably impossible! Outlook 97 on Win 11 fails earlier: Mailconfiguration missing, and exit.

Office 2000 generally tolerates being dragged from one system to another without a reinstall. Office 97/98 always does (tho setup will whine at you). I wonder if this install can do that? At least now you have a decent version of Office. Office 2016 is horrible.
I've been told that the widget crap comes back with the next update -- what have you found?
Classic Shell works fine with Win11, and improves its personality 100%. (I hate the launcher.) Also can fix the broken context menu with WinAero Tweaker.

With Office 2000 you might end up with needed .dlls missing doing it that way. Or even worse: Installer starts fro some reason, and you have the expected CD not ready, no fix possible, uninstall not possible - hence for Office 2000 I always copied the CDs either to a network share or to a local directory be always available.
As for the return of widget crap: Not tested, I am still at Windows 11 21H2 due to many bugs in 22H2, which are already fixed for insider "future 23H2" builds. My pet bug is this: learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/935493/windows-11-all-22h2-builds-explorer-exe-previous-v - but other bugs, like the RDP client bug, are the same: Already fixed for the future 23H2 and MS doesn't get up their a* to do it for 22H2 I suspect... It is like continuing the "OK build, shitty build, OK build" cycle introduced with Windows 10, just on a year and not half-year cycle.
Main reason for Windows 11: Nested-V for AMD. Minor reason: robocopy /iorate.

Says something that the Office of that era has never been beat.

@@GeneralPotatoSalad Fancy meeting you here :) Yeah. Office XP and up thru 2007 (with the ribbon disabled) are pretty much the same, but it goes to shit after that. Was indeed a good case of "if it ain't broke..."

@@JouMxyzptlk I was gifted a little Asus notebook that came with Win11, and it's currently up to 22H2 and doesn't seem to have any issues. Then again, it's not an everyday PC so doesn't get much opportunity to misbehave. (Everyday is still XP!) And I notice it disabled System Restore on its own, maybe that's your same bug.

@@Reziac Well, to be realistic: Over 99% have no problem, simply cause not many use all possible functions. But there is that 1% which stumble across things. And in Microsoft terms: 1% are often more than 100'000 or more than million users. How many actually USE shadowcopy locally. Most never heard about it in first place, even in server environments - although it was advertised about 20 years ago ruclips.net/video/HKlXtysD0d0/видео.html

I have the license for Office 2000 Professional, but one of the first CDs. Where can I get an image with the most actual version?

The "The Internet Archive". Enter that into a search engine, since youtube does not like links in comments :D.
Try to get one where Service Pack 2 is included. Copy the contents to the local drive before installing, and never delete them there (looong explanation why, just do it :D ). Then get Service Pack 3, and the few updates which came after Service Pack 3.
The version I use is one where I included Service Pack 3 as "Administrative Install". Created somewhere around 2002 when SP3 was released and I needed to safe time for a bigger rollout.

Why is the transparency of the assistant broken?

I consider this to be a normal glitch. I've seen similar glitches when running Startcraft 1, CD version + manual update, and some other games and programs. Might retry with Office 2003, maybe they fixed that glitch there. But I am too lazy to try.

Because Microsoft Agent doesn't work properly on Windows 7 and forward because Microsoft discontinued MS Agent in April 2009. There was a hotfix for Windows 7 available shortly after it was released until that hotfix was taken down after the OS reached end of life in 2020.
