That side slip 360 was amazing. I surfed almost everyday in the 70's ( mostly in Santa Cruz) and l never saw that maneuver. That said, many of us walked our 7'ers for cheater 5's or just to get forward on the board for more trim speed. Way more stylish to walk up than hop forward.
Fabulous 1967 Topanga Beach The Californians film!!
Very underrated surfer !
I surfed Topanga all through the 60s when it was totally private.
Jay Looks way ahead of his time.
Dude was fuckin' shredding for back then. I was like two years old. I started surfing about 6 yrs after this.
Great footage and commentary!
As the narrator says, very early 70s. No way you saw a board like that in '67. Nice film!
Remember his Surfer Cover sequence at the Ranch.
I could spend all day watching these Topanga Beach movies you have. I just bought a surf board and can't wait to jump in.
So can I. So I bought both of Jamie Budge's DVD's online.

Classic Jamie Budge
In July 1971 we stayed at Hal Jepson's house and walked down the canyon to surf Topanga.

Jay Riddle!!! OG style captain!!
Robbie Dick, Jay Riddle, Natural, Progression, surfboards, pro series!! Robert MIRABILIO 2nd Pl., County line 1977 pro am !! Point D Little D
J Riddle was the best surfer I ever saw in person, out in the water. While I was a terrible “stand up” surfer, kneeboarding was a different story. I would tackle thee biggest swells to roll thru Zuma, Drainpipe, whatever. At that size, most of the standup surfers would refrain, but not J, dominated and a sight to see!
Gerry Lopez was doing side slips in the tube at Pipeline back then.
😮😊 nice lêgênds🙏
Whats the name of this song?
Having trouble knowing what kind of wetsuit he has. I wanna get one like it
beaver tail
Yes. The “beaver tail”. A dead giveaway for the era you were surfing in.
I jammed at Topanga before they tore it all down
We need some newer footie of riddle!
