How to find good reference images: Learn the medical name for things which will help you to find clearer, better reference images instead of other people's makeup. So using 'laceration' instead of cut, 'ballistic trauma' instead of bullet hole, etc. I will often google image search but that can come up with -horrible- results so be careful, start out small. I also follow accounts that show good reference images and the discussion behind what happened, so people like mrs_angemi or medicaltalks on instagram, or makeup fx reference image groups on Facebook. I also like going on the Figure 1. app (like instagram for medical professionals) and you can search by body part or key words to find stuff on there too.
Freakmo ...Or you could visit 4chan or Reddit 😨 Seriously though? Figure1 is an AMAZING app for /ethical/ Doctor submitted quality reference photos. It's basically Instagram for medical professionals.
Freakmo I know, and I used to think it was no big deal but now I do. I've noticed how much of a difference it is and I want to hit my past self. Personally I think I did good for a 9 year old but still, I wanna cry from what I used to do.
I've been looking for a video like this for so long! There are tons of tutorials showing how to do things the right way, but no one talks about common mistakes and how to go about fixing them.
Would you ever consider coming to NY and doing a class? I love your work and the fact that you come on RUclips to not only show us tutorials but to teach us how to properly do FX makeup is amazing. You're such an inspiration!
As a professional fx makeup artist, THANK YOU for making this video!!! YOU have voiced what the rest of us have been saying for a while! I'm totally sharing this all over my social media! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
I should be asleep because it's like 3am here! But I saw a Freakmo notification and couldn't resist 😂! This video is awesome and SO true! It drives me nuts when people build an inch of wax off of their skin! Haha XD What a cool trick mixing dish soap with the blood! Oh man it kills me when people put watered down acrylic paint on their skin!! 😣 Great video!! Keep up the great work :)
Witte Artistry and it's hard to sculpt an injury and think ahead to how and where it's going to be applied and then, how big you can go before it looks like a mini mask.
Although my videos aren't bloody and gory I am proud of not being an offender of number 11. I'm still very happy my makeup videos are original. That's why I don't post so much. I don't want to do what everyone else is doing or done. Another reason I'm a fan of your channel. You're always creating something new. Thank you!!
Oh my gosh, THANK YOU for the tip about the fake blood beading up!! Every time I use blood on wax, I have to move it around every couple seconds to get a good picture of it!! SO annoying!
I've been a subscriber from the very beginning. It really is such a wonderful thing to see how much you've grown as an artist! Tbh I don't think I'll ever try to do sfx makeup myself, but seeing a new video of yours always excites me. Your work is always amazing!
Very nice, high quality video. Thank you so much for number 10. Too many people are doing dumb shit and the irony is that doing a makeup with an aluminum can or scissors sticking out of your face is grounds for getting the real injury.
Look at anatomy references, surgery videos(ed heads, RUclips, etc. not too nasty as it’s a clean scientific environment) or videos made by trauma doctors (explaining healing process/body’s response to traumatic injuries, anatomy, and likely be less disturbing than say a picture of a body or critically injured person in a car accident, or a murder scene.) You can also just research the skin, especially if it pertains to yourself or your model.
OMG I was thinking of doing a video about the same things: edges, color matching, too much blood etc. This is wonderful, it's so clear and informative! Well done.
Man, you are soooo on point. Like literally!! Thank you for pointing out the mistakes that even "experienced" make up artists do. Really helpful information
An awesome way to make cheap blood darker and thicker/stickier is adding a black cream face/body paint- a small amount. We did it in emergency times at our haunted house I volunteer at and it's seriously pretty great for shading!
Thank you for saying so much of this! I'm a sfx artist and I lead a large team of people for a haunted attraction and I find myself saying so much of this over and over again. Just because you saw someone else do it on youtube doesn't mean it's safe!
This video is so great! I already know all this mistakes but is so cool you make something like this. I especially love the last advice about being original with your own creations :D
This was such a helpful video - thanks! I'm a beginner at this and I'm just delving into the actual makeup part, and these are some really solid tips. Also, it's nice to hear it's supposed to be difficult and took you about a year to get good :)
Hi I'm not sure if you will see this but would you be interested in making and organisation video to show how you organise fx products and tools. I think it would be really helpful :)
This helped so much! I've got a huge interest in fx but unfortunately there's no local shops that supply things like nose and scar wax and proper quality fake blood. So after a little googling I managed to find a recipe using Vaseline and corn flour! I also made blood out of maple syrup and red food dye. I was proud of the cut I managed to make on my little sister's forehead, but after watching this video I realized I did all the wrong things haha. Still a good first try!
Hi Kiana. I am studying my diploma in creative make up for screen and media . I'm a perth girl too! Just wanted to thank you for this vid. Keep up the good work ☺
Even as just a self-taught horror artist, all those mistakes make me cringe so hard... I recognize many of them from my own community, for some reason people put a ton of gore over realism when it comes to creating disturbing imagery.
I have used your ideas to create a mask of my own face. I didn't have your stuff to make it with, so I had to improvise but I wish I could show you what you inspired.
Good advice on blood. Real blood does feel like water when it drips out and is warm. As it drys it becomes kinda sticky and crusts up. Sometimes blood gets jelly like depending on the persons medical issues. As for the color it is like a deep but vivid/bright red with orange/yellow tones in there. As it becomes older the color becomes like a Burgundy/brown color and when it's completely crusted and old it is a dark brown *almost* black but not quite.
something that i found that can make liquid latex easier to remove is putting a thin coat of vaseline or anything like that before working; the only problem would be if you forget to remove any excess, which usually makes the makeup that you apply over it either not apply well or it doesn't pick it up
The mistake i used to make was over gore it if that makes sense, i started when i was about 10 years old, and i used red markers, tissue and water. It looked ok, but i look back on the pictures and a staple in your hand would not make a crater of blood and gore xD this is a huge help for me!!
You really called me out with the glittery purple eyeshadow, I just finished a huge 'bruise' on my face using that 😭 but I also used some yellows and greens, but.. it really doesn't look good now that I've actually seen real bruises. Welp... time to start over XD
I personaly do put quite a bit of blck in my wounds to resemble a deep cut i also but quite alot of blood and colours nd i am very happy with the results 😊
I got fake blood from Walmart and it looked really pinkish. So I crushed up some black eyeshadow (not a whole lot) and mixed it in with the blood. It looked pretty realistic to me. Sfx makeup on a budget 😊
if you can only get the cheap fake blood you get in stores for Halloween, I emptied the tube into a pot and added a drop of non toxic washable black paint, it makes it look so much more realistic
Great vid! And yes so many getting famous off others designs. Just know if you do this workshops come to know and your chances of being hired by us are greatly diminished. So give credit everytime, you will actually be more respected. Look forward to watching more!
"Downright dumb shit" your killing me over here. But these are great points, everyone of them. I'm only a half step above beginner, but can forget some of these. Great reminders. Thank you as usually for great content.

I rarely mess up bruises and smaller cuts, I always have bruises and scrapes on my legs(i have long legs and they're a target for all my clumsyness) So i have a constant refrence. Although I rarely do make-up

Hhahaa yeah the bottled face one I got from reddit! Then /r/WTF stopped allowing gore, boo!
Freakmo I knooow! I stopped browsing Reddiit for a few months and when I came back r/WTF had disallowed it :P
Freakmo awesome! Thanks for this. I need to practice more!
Disarticulated is another good one.
When people don't blend edges it makes me want to cry
Hhahaa it's a very small thing which makes a big difference, I think a lot of people just don't know how to, or try to rush through it.
Freakmo I know, and I used to think it was no big deal but now I do. I've noticed how much of a difference it is and I want to hit my past self. Personally I think I did good for a 9 year old but still, I wanna cry from what I used to do.
Same 😒
lil buggy aka people on tiktok
I made it 1K and it made my day
I know that it’s fake but watching you scratch off the “bad” cut literally made my skin crawl

Yay! Yeah there's a lot for beauty makeup but I couldn't' find any for FX makeup. I'm glad it helps :D
Amanda Rose I second this. Pure awesome from someone else who is just trying to be better today, than they were yesterday.

Gosh I wish! Sometimes Proren do the most amazing professional fx classes in NY, follow them on social media and ask if they'll teach again!
Freakmo Thank you! I do hope you can make it to NY in the future 😊
quick tip regarding beading and mouth bloods, just add a touch of toothpaste instead of soap. will do the job just as well but will be mouth safe.
DID SHE JUST SWATCH THOSE DIFFERENT BLOOODS LIKE IT WAS A BLOODY KYLIE LIP KIT😂😂😂 YAAASSS! #LEGEND omg I'm living

Hehe! Thanks :D
moxiemason you just have all the best reference tattoos. Terry Pratchett AND Fifth Element 😱😍

Witte Artistry and it's hard to sculpt an injury and think ahead to how and where it's going to be applied and then, how big you can go before it looks like a mini mask.
Agreed. Realism definitely takes a lot of time, skill, and forethought.
And screwing up! Lol. It's all part of the journey.
Yup! The best lessons are learned through trial and error! :)

Harry Fahringer this kinda think make the "medic" and "cranky dad" come out. I try to shut up, but it's hard. Lol
i would puke if i looked at real reference images 😅

I learned to do bruising with felt tip pens diluted with alcohol. Really gives you a good idea of the colours! Very good video!!

Hi Kiana. I am studying my diploma in creative make up for screen and media . I'm a perth girl too! Just wanted to thank you for this vid. Keep up the good work ☺
I would love to learn more about color matching and other ways to add more color into wounds.
Yes I'll need to film a colour matching tutorial, just gotta find some diverse skin tones that will let me put makeup on them
Even as just a self-taught horror artist, all those mistakes make me cringe so hard... I recognize many of them from my own community, for some reason people put a ton of gore over realism when it comes to creating disturbing imagery.
Learn something new everyday! Though to me the best thing about this was the fifth element tattoo!!
I love the tatoo on whoever's arm your working on!
I know I am insanely late to the party but the first thing I noticed was your Fifth Element tatttoo, that is very cool.
I have used your ideas to create a mask of my own face. I didn't have your stuff to make it with, so I had to improvise but I wish I could show you what you inspired.

I loved that blood swatches

Great video! Very insightful for every makeup artist. You did a really great job going into detail and using visuals
something that i found that can make liquid latex easier to remove is putting a thin coat of vaseline or anything like that before working; the only problem would be if you forget to remove any excess, which usually makes the makeup that you apply over it either not apply well or it doesn't pick it up

For darker thic blood, you can get clear liquid school glue and put 3 drops of red food dye and 1 drop of blue food dye
Alistair!! I didn't know you knew eachother😮😆

I personaly do put quite a bit of blck in my wounds to resemble a deep cut i also but quite alot of blood and colours nd i am very happy with the results 😊
i use toilet paper to make wounds
Victoria Girl *wounds
I’ve been so used to watching makeup injuries for Halloween costume ideas, it took me ages to realise that loads of the pictures she showed were real.
For a very realist looking blood use syrup ( like for like pancakes ) amd red food coloring and use a lot of food coloring it looks so realistic
This was really helpful. I make all these mistakes often.
I just started doing fx last month and this was so helpful😁
I got fake blood from Walmart and it looked really pinkish. So I crushed up some black eyeshadow (not a whole lot) and mixed it in with the blood. It looked pretty realistic to me. Sfx makeup on a budget 😊
I’ve done at least two mistakes from this video this helped so much thank you!
I watched this like 100 times. It helps soo much. And one question, where can I get cheap 99% alcohol
Love the fifth element tattoo
The J Star Androgyny pallet is amazing for bruising
I don't even do special effects but this is really interesting x
if you can only get the cheap fake blood you get in stores for Halloween, I emptied the tube into a pot and added a drop of non toxic washable black paint, it makes it look so much more realistic
For bruise I put some dark purple green black and some red to look irritated and it is lightly and it look real
Great vid! And yes so many getting famous off others designs. Just know if you do this workshops come to know and your chances of being hired by us are greatly diminished. So give credit everytime, you will actually be more respected. Look forward to watching more!
This is extremely helpful my sister is into it just like me and this helped
Thank you for making this! So helpful! Love all your content and creations! ❤
Thank you!
Please do a diy dark blood tutorial ♥️
Couldnt you add black to the wound to make it look necrotic ?
You can make your own blood just use cornsyrpe Hershey's chocolate syrup ( any chocolate syrup is fine ) and red food coloring:)
This is an incredible video!! You are so knowledgeable and informative 👍🏼
Make a beginner series please!!

This helped alot good to know i didn't make most of the mistakes mentioned here

omg just found this video and your channel. BEST INFO EVER! subbed and became an instant fan xox
For fake blood I typically use chocolate syrup and a lot of red food dye
I rarely mess up bruises and smaller cuts, I always have bruises and scrapes on my legs(i have long legs and they're a target for all my clumsyness) So i have a constant refrence. Although I rarely do make-up
Im looking back on this and am like "im doing burn makeup rn and i was horrible back then"
Compliments on how you explain this!
You should make your own line of makeup for this
The rest is real helpful but I think the bruise one can definitely vary depending on just how bad the bruise is
Im planning on getting a fifth element tattoo much like that one
When i was watching this i was like aaaa to much blood and gore thats how realistic your makeup is!!
Can I use homemade scar wax? (Flour and Vaseline) will that work for making wounds? I might make some
