  • Henry Ford wanted a factory with a huge swath of uninterrupted space to construct his Model Ts, and turned to architect Albert Kahn to build the Highland Park Ford Plant -- and numerous factories after that. The open space and big windows allowed light to reach workers as they did specific, individual tasks on cars that rolled through the factory. It is the prototype for American industrial architecture, but Ford demanded a new building only five years after it opened.
