Mass Effect 3 Ending: Choices and Theme

- BioWare recently announced that they'll be releasing DLC to help "clarify" the ending to Mass Effect 3. Maybe I'm naïve, but there's the smallest chance that they might make a bad ending decent, but only, I think, if they remember two important factors: Choice and Theme.

One of my favourite videos regarding the ending. Most criticisms of it are aimed at the plotholes, lack of closure, and lack of video game conventions (the final boss is Kai Leng. Think about that for a moment), rather than the fact that the ending betrays the themes we've been exploring over the course of three games. Those few criticisms that do tend to focus on Organics VS Synthetics rather than self-determination and defiance. There is another theme that is ignored though, Shephard's role.
Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed the "illusion of choice." I didn't complain.
Good ideas for how to fix the ending :)
I've heard "the crucible is a reaper trap," "the crucible only destroys reapers and nothing else," and the one I'm sure we're all aware of, the "indoctrination theory." I myself am not a big fan of the indoctrination theory, though this of me liking it less compared to other options. The idea you're espousing works pretty well within keeping the crappy ending that we have now, and it's the only one I've heard that actively incorporates the god-child
A way to make the ending bearable: Have the dialogue between Anderson and Shepard. Hackett says "Hey, it's working" via radio. Cut to the destroy ending, then have a little slideshow explaining what happened to the main characters.
Bam, the ending immediately becomes better. Not great, but better.

Holy shit! bioware took everything from here for the EC!
Great video. The theme was good till the end, bioware said in a blog that the games would continue. That means this is just the end of Shepard's. Yea it is a really bad send off but they want to put a new enemy that surpasses the reapers. There artistic vision is keep the franchise going and we keep paying to see more of a story that we will probably lose interest in. The extended cut will be the deciding factor to me if they can continue or not.

Exactly! The first thing I thought when I heard the Starchild's explanation was "that is THE most ass-backwards explanation you could POSSIBLY come up with for the existence of the Reapers"
My second was "Wait, how exactly are we incapable of understanding their purpose if it's that simple -- albeit extremely stupid"
...Yeah, you just said the main theme was "Self-Determination" because the more prevalent theme of Mass Effect, "Divesity makes us strong," was just like the theme you used in your own book.
Ah, well, it's a good theme to use.

wait wait wait... am I the only one who (for some reason) assumed that "starchild's" appearance is in fact an embodyment of Shephards guilt at being unable to save that child in the beginning of ME3, and that the "soul" of starchild is someone who has - in a long forgotten cycle - chosen to take control of the Reapers and then somehow become corrupted by them? I'm not sure how my logic got past the bit about no one ever finishing it before, but aside from that, it might be a decent ending, no?
I strongly disagree with your take on the "Illusion of choice." Just because your "choices" don't change whether Shepard succeeds or fails, it doesn't keep them from BEING choices. It wasn't ever an "illusion." It was simply the fact that there is more than one way to victory and the means are just as important as the ends. People are mad because we were promised control of means AND ends but got to control NEITHER. Not only that, but the closure the previous games offered was missing as well.
your idea to have the story re-written from the ground up is basically what the majority of fans want. retconning the starchild out is a close second, since everyone i know hates the existence of the illogical spacebrat. removing the sc would also be the best fix at the least expense. yes, it is a shame it is not up to you. bioware need to go to how to end a story class, imo.

If you come up with a civilization saying "we created Harbinger to be our peon", you'd destroy the message in last 10 min.
why can't bioware think if any of this things? How is it that the fans come up with better ideas? Also the Normandy and team mates fleeting need to change too.

I know only one game the choisis mater. Witcher 2 have only 1 choice who really mater, who play it will understand.

So instead of giving the fans the end THEY NEED, they'll just limit themselves to explain us WHY their ending sucks balls
