The 9-mile train line operated by a Japanese cat | Kishigawa Railway

- I spent a day exploring the Kishigawa Railway in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. The line is famous for its "stationmaster cat", Nitama. Nitama sits in a cubicle, with a little special hat, and tourists come from across Japan and even other countries to see the spectacle.
I managed to see Nitama as he started his shift one morning (no hat, though). Then I set off down the Kishigawa Line, to see the rest of it. The line includes 14 stations and is a mere nine miles long. As one of only two private railways in Wakayama Prefecture, it's a mostly rural line, with small unmanned stations amid fields of crops, ponds, shrines, and small quiet communities. I rode the trains - including its specialty cars themed with strawberries, a Tama Museum, and Chuggington - and walked between some of the stations. A lot of interesting and unexpected highlights on this peculiar little railway. Plus, lots of snow flurries in my face!

I fully concur. Totally unique perspective on obscure spots in Japan. I LOVE small train lines and small towns in Japan. My dream is to spend weeks doing things like this, traveling the literal backroad tracks of Japan, and staying in some of these small towns.

One of my all time favorite videos from small town Japan, small train line. So interesting, especially with Korean tourists flocking to the train cat museum. So close to Osaka, now on my growing list of places to visit.
This line is actually quite well known among Asian countries. Most of the Asian tourists go to Wakayama for the sole reason of riding this line and see Nitama

Another pleasing glimpse, Jeremy. I especially liked the shrine part, where you talked about shrines' tranquility. Not like a park, not a church, something between. No equivalence with either US or Europe? -- charlie, sacramento CA
I think shrines and temples are sort of general places for people to go and pray, but it's not really like a church. Many people only go once a year or so (new years time). And (like Tsubosaka, the eyesight temple in last week's video) certain places have a certain focus. Some people (like me) just like visiting different ones to admire the buildings, statues, landscape, and yes, tranquility. I'd say yes, kind of between a park and a church maybe

Another great insight into Japanese culture. Even a run-down home is still aesthetic. Amazed at how clean the streets are. We could take a lesson from them and apply that here in the United States. I reside in a small town in south Georgia. One thing we do that I have not observed much in Japan, is that we smile and wave to everyone. We also share the road. Thanks. I too am from Georgia, and no, Japanese people don't tend to be open and friendly to strangers as much. There will be a quick "konnichiwa" sometimes when you pass someone though. But not chatty like Georgians, until someone like me stops and engages them!

Hey I heard Florida is having temps down in the 30s these days! I just an hour ago had to cancel a trip to north of Osaka for a train ride due to heavy snow. That cat has the right idea, sit on a warm cushion all day, I guess
