Ansys Fluent: Power And Torque Calculations On A Simple Turbine

  • This video shows how to simulate the air flow around a three blade savonius turbine using the dynamic mesh tool on Ansys Fluent. Also, the data of the simulation is exported as a text file, using these some relevant quantities, such as the force on the turbine, its torque, angular speed, power, etc, can be calculated and plotted.
    The calculation of the angular velocity may need some explaining. Given that on the turbine wall the velocity of the fluid is the exact same as the velocity of said wall(because of the non slip condition), the maximum velocity on the turbine is calculated as "max_vel" as shown in the video. That maximum velocity happens on the point of the turbine wall that is the farthest from the center of rotation, which is at a distance of 0.25[m], which you can measure from the geometry. After that, you have Vel_max = omega R, then omega = Vel_max/R and finally omega = Vel_max/0.25[m]. Which is the expressión used for the angular velocity.

    Thanks a lot for the new tutorial. Your tutorials are helping me a lot.
    For the past few days, I am trying to simulate the motion and residence of solid particles (mean dia = 0.1 mm, density 200 kg/m3) around a spherical bubble in a cylinder (2D planar, vertical). Water flows from the inlet (velocity =1m/s) with outlet maintained at pressure outlet. Solid particles should be injected from the inlet side. I have used the DPM model and run the case for 5 secs. But I am finding it difficult to get the result. If you could make a tutorial on this, it would be a great help for me. Thanks.

    Hello sir, I'm one of your RUclips followers. I'm currently facing an issue in running a simulation of a Savonius wind turbine. I'm working on my thesis which needs to be completed, and I'm struggling to meet the demands of my thesis supervisor who requires obtaining RPM directly from Ansys simulation. The variables I'm using include wind speed variations from 1m/s to 7m/s. If you would be willing to create a tutorial video, I would be extremely grateful to you.

The angular velocity seems fine as it increases from zero and finally stable. As it happens, moment, on the other hand, keep decreasing from the maximum value to around zero which made me confuse. Would u mind to share the tips or myabe a contact so that i can complete my research sirs? Thanks in advance

    why you used the expression for speed?

    • @fluentsetup1232
      @fluentsetup1232  2 года назад

      I usually like to increase the speed gradually from 0 to a predetermined value and i need an expression for that (or a UDF). Otherwise the velocity jumps from 0 to a higher value in a very small time step and that's not realistic and it looks weird when you do the animation.

    Hi, very good video. I have an issue, if you coul help me: I've done a simulation of a turbine using this exact method, but when I plot the velocity contour there are always discontinuities between both domains (fixed and rotational) at the interface. How can I fix that? In 20:37 I see you don't have such discontinuities on the plot. I used sliding mesh and not dynamic mesh btw.
