IELTS vs TOEFL - Which English Test Should You Take?
Many of you have asked me: "Which test should I take, the IELTS or the TOEFL?". I took both tests, the IELTS and the TOEFL. We have a look at all four parts of the tests and I tell you where they differ and where they are similar. In the end you should be able to decide which test you want to take: the IELTS or the TOEFL.

IELTS Listening vs TOEFL Listening
In IELTS Listening you listen to conversations and a talk or a lecture. The questions are a mix of fill in the gap and multiple choice questions. IELTS Listening is especially challenging for two reasons. First, you must answer the questions while you are listening to the recording. Second, for some questions you must understand the exact word or words that the speaker mentions.
In TOEFL Listening you listen to conversations and lectures. There are only multiple choice questions, no fill in the gap questions. The main difference between IELTS and TOEFL Listening is that in the TOEFL you first listen to the audio and after that you answer questions.
My Tip
Check out which test format you like better. Do you prefer answering the questions while listening or do you prefer taking notes and answering them afterwards? Also, if understanding and spelling words is difficult for you, you may want to consider the TOEFL.
IELTS Reading vs TOEFL Reading
IELTS Reading and TOEFL Reading are quite similar. In both tests you have to read several passages and you must answer a number of questions. Also, for both tests you need a reading strategy to filter out the relevant information.
My Tip
Although IELTS Reading and TOEFL Reading are quite similar, I think that IELTS Reading is easier than TOEFL Reading. I found the questions in IELTS Reading easier and the passages less complex compared to TOEFL Reading.
IELTS Writing vs TOEFL Writing
In IELTS Writing there are 2 writing tasks. In task 1 you have to describe something, for example, a chart or a map. In task 2 you have to write an essay.
In TOEFL Writing there are also 2 writing tasks. Task 1 is the integrated essay: you first read an article and after that you listen to a lecture. In your essay you must state the arguments of the writer and the counterargument of the lecturer. Task 2 is the independent essay which is quite similar to task 2 in IELTS Writing.
My Tip
The main difference between IELTS Writing and TOEFL Writing is task 1. In my opinion IELTS Writing is a bit harder.
IELTS Speaking vs TOEFL Speaking
The IELTS Speaking test is face-to-face. In TOEFL Speaking you speak into the microphone of your computer. TOEFL Speaking is quite challenging because in some of the tasks you must read a passage and listen to the audio and then you need to combine this information and deliver your answer. Further, note-taking is quite challenging in TOEFL Speaking.
My Tip
Think about whether you prefer talking to a person or a computer. Have a look at the task types of the TOEFL and check whether you can cope with that.
Taking the IELTS vs Taking the TOEFL
You can take the IELTS on the computer or on paper. In some countries at home, you can currently take the IELTS at home, this is called the IELTS Indicator. Pay attention because not all institutions accept the IELTS Indicator. The TOEFL is always computer-based. You can take the test in the test center or at home, this is called the TOEFL Home Edition. Again, make sure that your institution accepts the TOEFL Home Edition.

I'm so glad it's helpful to you 😀.
Hello Juva, thank you so much for this great video.
My level of English is B2 and I want to get a scholarship to study abroad. Actually most of the scholarships that are adjusted for me accept both of them. but it's been a while that i haven't worked on my writing, reading, listening and speaking and i want to start working on them for taking one of these tests. My country is Afghanistan and I don't know which one of them is home edition.......Do you mind if I ask your opinion ?
I'm so glad you like it 😀. Both tests can be taken from home, but I recommend checking whether your scholarship provider accepts the home versions. Think about where your strengths are and which tasks may suit you better. I hope this helps!
Hi Juva, thank you for this video ! I've got a question for you : I'm still hesitating between these two exams, because I don't know the equivalence between them. I'll give you an example : some universities ask for a score of 79-80 for the Toefls, but, at the same time, they ask for a score of 6,5 for the IELTS. Are these scores equivalent, or the 79 is easier to get than the 6,5 ? Thank you very much !
Hi :) That's a great question! Whether getting a score of 79 is easier for you than a band 6.5 or not depends on your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you struggle with writing, you may find IELTS Writing more difficult than TOEFL Writing and you may lose points there. I'd recommend thinking about your strengths and weaknesses and then figure out which test may allow you to get a higher score. Have a look at the free practice tests that you can find on the TOEFL website and the IELTS website to get an idea of the tasks. Hope this helps!
i've took toefl exam and despite of all of the hardship i've been through, my score wasn't the score i have aimed for . now i think i have to take eilts it seems easier for me
No worries, you can do it! Have a look at my IELTS playlists where you can find strategies and tips.
Thanks
I'm so glad it was helpful 😀
Damn, she makes one feel Toefl is better taking than IELTS, for the Toefl is quite tough and depressing despite months of practice, making it hard to get the required scores for admission whereas, with IELTS without so much preparation, even with only two weeks of preparation, on just the first attempt, i could score 6.5 Band, but the disadvantage here is when aiming to further your studies in US or Canada, most University might not even consider IELTS, whereas Europeans schools accept both IELTs and Toefl! 😠
Haha I'm also confused
Congratulations! That's a great score, you can be so proud of yourself 😀. I recommend checking out the requirements for your course to see which English test they accept.
Thank you so much. It helps a lot.
Can you please tell me which websites offer Tofel and Ielts test and give certificate? It will help more. Thank you for making such a good informative video.
I'm so glad it's helpful 😀. If you want to take the TOEFL, you can register on the ETS website. If you want to take the IELTS, you can register with the British Council or IDP IELTS depending on where you want to take the test.
@@juva thank you so much you are a life saver ❤
@@fashiondoll8755 You're very welcome! 😀
Thanks for the information. It would be great if you could tell us how much time we have for the exam. By the way, thank you very much. That was a great deal of useful information. Best wishes! ❤❤❤
I'm so glad you like it 😀. Both the IELTS and the TOEFL take about 3 hours. However, the new TOEFL (from 26 July) will be shorter.
@@juva Thank you so much 😍😍🥰🤩🤩
Hello Juva. I am from Indonesia. I am studying English by-myself through the Youtobe. I don't have money enough to follow the TOEFL and IELST. So.thanks of your video. But you know, my plan to continue the magister of law. And one of requirement is must have the TOEFL AND IELST certificate

@@nomukinaribaeflores2142 I'm afraid I don't offer online classes at the moment because I have to study a lot for university. If you have any questions, please put them in the comments, I'll be happy to answer them :).
@@juva Hello first: Thank you for this video and for your time. I appreciate your efforts and your hard work for us to explain the TOEFL and IELTS exams. Thank you very much for spending your time with us.
Secondly : I'm not fast in writing, and also my weaknesses are writing, so what should I choose (TOEFL or IELTS test) , and Do you have a link or website that I can access to know what I chose ?? please and thank you again 😊😇 And by the way, you are very beautiful and I Admire your beauty .
IELTS listening is horrible. I can't pickup the word and write it down while also concentrating on the audio. I don't get enough time to give an answer, whereas I did a lot better in TOEFL. I get enough time to think about a question and choose the correct answer. IELTS is literally torture for me.
So great that you know which test works best for you 😀. It's great if you know where your strengths lie because this helps you figure out which test is best for you.
It's not horrible, It's just that kind of test is not suitable for you.
Meanwhile I personally far prefer IELTS listening rather than TOEFL, because I don't have to bother reading my notes which I can sometimes misses important info
@@PradiptaGitayaYeah same here man taking notes while listening is hard af because you basically need to write down every information you hear.
Dear Juva, I'm planning to continue my phd in the Usa, I used to study English but then I started to learn french so it's been about 3years that I haven't studied English seriously and I have about 6 months to prepare myself for an English test....I don't know which one to choose because, I guess both have some positive and negative points for me and I can't stop thinking that Toefl might be preferred in the USA....Do you mind if I ask your opinion ?
Hi Niloufar, I'd recommend doing it like this: first, check which tests your institution accepts. If they accept both, the IELTS and the TOEFL, think about your strengths and weaknesses and figure out which suits better. Generally, TOEFL is more common in the US but many institutions also accept the IELTS. Hope this helps :).
Plz make a video of listening hacks that boost our reading score
Are you referring to the IELTS or the TOEFL?
I love you now... Now I chose tofel because of you 😅😂👍
I'm so glad you found the perfect test for you! I'm flattered 😊.
Thanks juva, your explanation skills are extraordinary well done 🙌🙌
And im also interested in your opinion as you know better which one is easier ( don't tell me that depends on you ) I'm currently in 12th standard plus I'm very confused, also I don't have any nearby mentor to tell me about this stuff
Lots of love from india +
I think I'm having a silent crush on you :)
Hey Ramneek, I'm so glad you like it :). Whether you find the TOEFL or the IELTS easier depends on your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you struggle with Writing, I'd recommend taking the TOEFL because IELTS Writing is harder. However, if you struggle with Reading, I'd recommend taking the IELTS because IELTS Reading is easier than TOEFL Reading. Hope this helps!
Thanks for it and what about my crush on you 🤣🤣

No Confusion my love is ETS TOEFL IBT HOME EDITION IS BEST.
So great that you found your favourite test! :)
Teofl is valid in Europe also right?... not fixed any institute yet... bt wanted to know the general status
There are institutions in Europe accepting the TOEFL. I highly recommend checking out whether your institution accepts it before registering 😀.
Should I still take the tests even though I have English as a second language.
Hi, whether you need to take a test or not depends on whether your institution requires it. I'd recommend checking out the requirements first :).
Hello. I wanted to get admitted into Oxford University. Which requires 110 in toefl & 7.5 in ielts. Which should i go for?
Hi, so great that you want to apply to the University of Oxford! Check out the video and think about which of the two you think fits better. It depends a lot on where your strengths and weaknesses are. Hope this helps :).
Hi Juva, mind if I ask you for some advice? I just took the TOEFL on September 25th, and I got a 90 for my overall score, which is not the best score in my case. I plan to retake the test, but I am indecisive about whether I should retake the TOEFL or the IELTS. I personally think the IELTS is easier, but I am more familiar with the TOEFL format. So, which one should I take, based on your judgment through your experience?
Hi Chalisha, first of all congratulations on your score! Whether you should choose the IELTS or the TOEFL depends on which task types you prefer and, of course, on how much time you have to prepare. I'd recommend this: First, have a look at the tasks in the IELTS and think about whether you find them easier than the TOEFL. If you have lots of time to prepare, this might be a good choice. Second, figure out where you lost points in the TOEFL. Was it due to a particular task, because you were nervous etc.? In this case, you could focus on that which may take less time than preparing for the IELTS. Hope this helps :).
Do we do face to face speaking for computer based ietls ?
Yes, in the computer-based IELTS the speaking test is face-to-face.
Are we provided with draft papers with computer based Toefl exams ?
That's a great question! As far as I know you will get paper to take notes in the test center.
Speed 1.5 is perfectly ok
I'm so glad you like it 😀.
I am afraid
No worries, you can do it! 😀
Where are you from i like your speaking
I'm so glad you like it 😀. I'm from Germany.
@@juva thanks a lot to tell me thanks
Which one is easy?
Whether you find the IELTS or the TOEFL easier depends on your strengths and weaknesses. I recommend this: make a list of them and then watch the video to figure out which test you will find easier. Hope this helps! 😀
Toefl is valid I’m germany also right?
This will depend on your institution. I recommend checking the requirements of your institution before registering for the test.
