We and our sewing machines are becoming increasingly sophisticated and it’s very easy to overlook the obvious. It’s good to be reminded to go back to basics. Saves times and a lot of head scratching 😄
Thanks Shelly, I know it's so true isn't it. We've honestly had people who've been sewing for decades who are having problems and it has transpired to be one of these simple fixes that solved it.
Having worked in a sewing shop for 6 years I am with you on all your hints and tips! It’s still very annoying when your machine misbehaves and it’s usually a simple fix!! Even some machines just don’t like a certain brand of thread😂 who knew they have their favourites too!! This will certainly help a lot of people Lucy xx
Thank you so much for this I’ve tried everything to fix a problem on my machine and it was something as simple as tightening the needle too much. I live in a country that doesn’t have a certified brother dealer so your tips helped a lot. Again thanks
Your tip on making sure the needle is inserted far enough up is a very good one. I took my right needle out of Janome Overlooker to try a different stitch. Upon putting all dials etc back to normal it would not form loops. After 4 hours of rethreading, Youtubing, looking up manual etc and walking away. I thought what was the last thing I did before it played up. Unscrewed right needle and instantly realised it wasn't pushed up high enough. Worked like a dream after I fixed this.
Oh my goodness Lucy! This is the funniest thing. I've had my machine for 10 years and have been sewing that long too and I've always put the thread around that little screw at the top! I didn't realise it went under the plastic bit behind that. I've never actually had a problem with sewing but sometimes I've found the thread jumped off that screw when I was sewing fast or using a zigzag. I've now promptly threaded it correctly. It just goes to show it's the little things! So thank you for this video xx
Thank you so much Lucy, I really really enjoyed this, it’s really really helpful and useful too. And the tip about putting a piece of paper or card below the needle before you take it out is very very useful , as I’ve nearly lost a needle 🪡 like that!!!!! Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
I bought a Baby Lock Evolution from a firm in Germany. The stitch sample was perfect but I could not get it to stitch properly. Turns out the technician hadn’t tightened one of the needle clamps properly and in the post one of the needles worked its way down a bit. As soon as the needle was at the correct height I got great results
So glad you enjoyed it. As with the sewing machine needles there are no hard and fast rules, I often change my sewing machine needles every project or every other project, usually because I'm working with a different type of fabric. For my overlocker I change the needles less regularly, however, it would be one of the first things I checked if I was having stitch quality problems on my overlocker and I think that's the key point - ruling blunt needles out if you're having problems on either machine by changing them. Hope that helps.
I'm wondering... would a ball point, or a denim needle be better for working with fleece? I've been working on some things in fleece lately, and am about to try switching to ball point to see if that works better. I was using denim, because I'm usually going through at least two layers of fleece.
Sew Essential It's gorgeous. I love the neckline. Would you have the pattern number to hand still please? I'm looking for a dress I can make to wear to a wedding and this might well work!

Thank you! Your timing is perfect, I was thinking my machine might need to go in for a tune up, your tips were such a good reminder!
So glad it was useful for you Laura, sometimes it is worth getting back to basics again.

Very useful thanks. How often do you change your overlocker needles?

Hello, I was wondering should I be able to see the bottom thread on the top of the fabric.
By the way, I love your top!
Thank you it is a Burda dress I made in John Kaldor fabric a couple of years ago.

I've been sewing 50 years, and have done all things suggested, and I am still having difficulty sewing on "SCUBA". Any ideas?
Have you tried both stretch and ball point needles? Sometimes one works better than the other in my experience depending on the scuba.
