  • In March 2014, 19-year-old Derek Pfaff was home for spring break from Saginaw Valley State University and attempted to take his own life with a shotgun. He survived, but he had several surgeries ahead of him to reconstruct his face, leading up to needing a face transplant. On Feb. 1, 2024, Lisa Pfaff received the phone call that there was a potential donor and the family needed to be at Mayo Clinic the next day. Soon after, the 60-hour face transplant surgery began and was completed successfully. With this new lease on life, Derek Pfaff said he hopes to continue sharing his story to help others get through hard times. (Kaytie Boomer | MLive.com)

Not the son? He's the one that has to endure all these surgeries.
