    I have been using a high performance (Pro) tension assembly, but began having tension problems after a couple of years. I am not a prolific quilter. I am glad I kept the standard one that came with my machine. The high performance one doesn’t look a bit different to me except for the graphite discs that replace the felt ones on the standard assembly. Even the knobs are the same. The one important difference is that the post is removable on the standard assembly, but the post will not come out of the Pro tensioner, so I can’t change the spring.

    Can the composite disks be used in place of the felt disks on the older tension assembly?

      I have had good luck with the older assembly so am not really ready to convert. I just wondered if it was possible. I will keep it in mind if I start having problems. Innova is such a great machine. I love mine. Thanks for the great videos.

    Great demo. Question: why is the tension assembly where you wrap the thread x number of times around better than the kind with two disks which press together and you dial the pressure of those two disks but the thread only goes once through those two disks. I hope I am clear. Thanks in advance.

      With a rotary tension, it is often possible to change from one thread line to another with no or little adjustment required of the top thread tension. The diameter of the thread has no affect on the breaking action of the rotary tension device. Whereas adjustment is always necessary with a disk tension as the diameter of the thread passing between the disk "sandwich" creates a heavier breaking action with a thick versus thinner thread. Also affecting tension breaking action is the sewability of the thread. Sewability is how easily the thread passes through the machine because of the smoothness of the thread. Sewability is reduced by threads having a relatively fuzzier appearance and/or greater numbers of slubs. Slubs are build ups of dye on the thread that look like little bulges and feel like rough spots or bumps as you pull and feel the thread pass between your thumb and pointer finger. Threads with lesser sewability require more adjustment to be accommodated by a disk tension as they pass between the disks. In comparison, the rotary tension allows slubs and fiber fuzzy to just easily roll with the tension wheel and minimal change to the tensions breaking action. We hope this helps!
