Great video, Steve! 🥃
Glad you enjoyed it! They're great to film and research!
I've only tried the Chairman's white, wich I like in a Daiqiri or Mojito. The spiced is next on my list. Great video Steve! Cheers!
Cheers Jo. Yeah the white is Fantastic. Blind Tasting; my Favvy White Daiquiri Rum. And, well the Spiced, it’s the benchmark for proper authentic Spiced Rums. Very different to Bumbu/Kraken etc.
This is such a great series of videos. It's so interesting. I have not tried any of these yet, so ive added to the long list😂
Cheers Dean. SLD are kinda like the sleeping Giants. Not as popular. But easily have the quality of major Distillers like Foursquare and Mount Gay!
Love admiral, Rodney🇱🇨 love my beautiful country sweet st.lucia 🇱🇨
Thanks Steve very interesting video
Cheers Harry!
Hi Steve! love your videos! I love Mai Tais! Problem is... so many recipes calling for so many different rums! light, gold, dark', aged, etc... Also some recipes call for blend of 3 to 4 rums! Its makes it difficult to choose a rum even more so trying to choose up to 4 rums! Also Jamaican, Martinique, Barbados, etc... Its mind boggling for the choices to be made. I am leaning towards Appleton 8, Plantation OD for starters. I always have Cachaca silver and aged on hand so I was thinking about using that as a "Rhum Agricole" Also want to try some Plantation OFTD and the Xaymaca Special Dry too. I want some funk but not too much. Question: If you were to pick just 4 reasonably priced rums to make a perfect Mai Tai or other Tiki cocktails, Which ones would you choose? Thank you, Sir!
Try this Lawrence… may not answer exactly. But could help; ruclips.net/video/Fba05d7uQKU/видео.html
@@StevetheBarmanUK Thank You, Sir! The video helped me narrow down my choices.
@@lawrencespies8674 after 4 months, have you managed to try and any new blends and have a favourite? Denizen 8 I’d say is my favourite but also enjoy Kevin Crossman’s. I do enjoy the Plantation X0 although a Barbados rum
Nearly a year into my rum journey and still not tried Chairmans Reserve. One of the first most people go to as well. Don't know what's stopped me.
love chairman's had all the line ups wish they would do more limited editions especially master selection
Have you tried the Officers Releases for Admiral Rodney. I liked the first, but the second wasn't for me. But then I'm not overly keen on different finishes. Sherry, Port etc. I like Rum with minimal barrel influence... or at least straight down the line Bourbon that only really gives a hint of vanilla for example.
@@StevetheBarmanUK the extra old one.. .is the one i had in that line up not had the sherry finish u right about the forgotten cask ..its not a limited edition but still some websites say it is
Great video. What about the Chairman's Reserve 2005 when it comes to age statements?
As far as I’m aware, SLD don’t actually market it as an Age Statement. Just a vintage. Varying Rums distilled in 2005… I don’t know whether it’s actually varying ages, but was always under the impression…cos that’s what they do…that it’s a blend of different Rums/Distillates. I assume a few different ages. But may have been all say 10-14yo…just all distilled in 2005. Which you could argue is X years old, unless some were put in IBCs to sit.
But in any case, their wording is always about the Blend, Not a specific X years old. Don’t think you’ll find that on the bottles. But I maybe wrong as I don’t have it. But I’ve not seen a X year old SLD Rum.
@@StevetheBarmanUK Yes it's a blend and no, there's no specific age statement. I yield to your superior knowledge but my bottle of the rum was visible as I watched the video. When blended the rums were 4 years old and they're then returned to the casks for a further 10 years. I didn't purchase this in the UK.
Ha. Nah. TBH. You could argue…if you wanted to, how is it any different…to say Appleton 8yo. Which has 8yo, 12…and I believe a smidgen of 15yo. Like Chairmans Forgotten Casks is 8-11yo Rums. So you could say 8yo as the minimum age is 8yo in the bottle. It’s how most Brands do it. Always X yo as the youngest Rum. It’s just merely that SLD never claim age statements and prefer to focus on the Blend as opposed to minimum Age.
I have heard that if you want a similar taste to, but don't want to pay for Caroni, then a pure vendome still from Saint Lucia is the way to go.
They release them sporadically via their Chairman's Reserve Master's Selection range.
Hmmm. Interesting. I’ve tried some of the Chairmans Master Selection. I certainly wouldn’t put them anywhere near the few Caroni’s I’ve tried. Very different. But hey, that’s just me 🤷♂️
I'm just gonna buy me "Forgotten Cask at Easter)👌
Just seen on MOM Bounty strong 151, great if you could do a review of that?
Great Rum isn’t it. Haven’t compared side by side to say like Don Q 151 but that’ll come next year. With Reviews, I’m now doing them methodically, so if the generally masses vote for St Lucia up next, then it’ll come. If not, it’ll have to wait a while 👍
In the Rum world, it seems that there are only the big corporates distilleries and not small private ones, such as in the Bourbon world where you have both. Is that true? Also would be really cool if you started a second channel for Rum spotlights for smaller distilleries (if they exist) and/or for the over $50 mark stuff.
I do UK ones over on @stevethebarmanrumreviews. Obviously i have access to them. Small Boutique US And worldwide brands, not so much... well actually...not at all. As for over $50... the main reason i focus on Under £50/$60 is purely because every blogger or reviewer only focuses on the Over. So i purposely go for beginner to lower end. Who knows, in 3 years, I may get to doing exclusively over £50/$60...but for now, the odd one here and there, but thats it.
BTW...i do have 3 rum Channels! Links in all video descriptions!
Hi Steve! I want to hear your opinion on Matusalem 15 (my favourite up to now) Some of my rum-mates (not room- mates- i 've got my own flat , thank goodness) don't understand why so. Cause according to them and it's true to some extent-there's nothing in this rum in exuberance, and it's somewhat faded. I, in my turn, try to explain to them that it's what i like about this rum-light, cuban style of rum, very, very smooth, a bit spicy but with a touch of character, easily drinking and without distracting your attention to it. Because there are times when i would't like a storm of passion))) What d'ya think 'bout it and how does it compare to its elder relative- Matusalem 23? Is that one way better?
Matusalem isn’t a brand I’ve spent much time with. The White is decent. Not epic. But decent. We did the 15 as part of a Live Show tasting about. 6-7 weeks ago and that didn’t fair too well. Nothing bad, just not great. Now I’ve not had the 23 in quite a few years, so can’t comment. But those that had the 23 in my community said they preferred it a lot more to the 15. But for me to pass judgement, I’d need to revisit.
@@StevetheBarmanUK Ок. In my community (personally I haven't had the 23),people say the difference between the two siblings pretty faint, given that the elder brother nearly twice as much in price (70 euros up to 35 ) Moreover the 23 is sweeter (9 grams per 1litre against 4 -5 in the 15") and perhaps it's this that makes it more popular with teens.
