This was literally the most hyped I had ever been for a Mark Martin win. I had seen so many wins slip away due to fuel mileage woes but today Mark was the benefactor. It was like all those other loses made this one so much sweeter.
The ending to this race is like a horror movie where you think you’ve taken out the monster but he comes back to slay another one of the characters. Jimmie and Mark were that monster and Biffle was just another victim.
Jimmie Johnson seemed to be great at Michigan for the majority of his career. He should have had at least 5 wins there. Instead, 2014 would be Johnson's only victory at the track. Also, Martin's 2009 resurgence was so awesome to see. Too bad he could never win the elusive cup title.
As a Jimmie Johnson fan when I was a kid, I remember when he ran out of fuel, I turned off the TV. I didn’t like Greg Biffle at the time. Then I decided to turn on the tv right after cuz I was like “might as well finish it”. I’m so glad I got to witness history 😂😂
I remember watching the final laps of this and being blown away. First you have Johnson who is stinking up the sport with his run of championships and all, and when it cycles to Biffle, it’s like “okay, that could be cool and work” and then he runs out of gas, and Mark Martin gets another win in his breakout year at HMS and is a feel good moment for the old timer, but the unexpectedness of it all, it was maddening
The entire run on TNT that year was wild. The week before at Pocono Stewart won on fuel, the next week Mark Martin does the same, the week after that the most chaotic Sonoma race I personally ever seen, the iconic Daytona finish, the Chicagoland race nobody talks about, and Joey Logano’s history making win at New Hampshire.
And Bill Weber getting suspended then released for a brawl with Ralph Sheheen stepping in for the latter 3 races before Adam Alexander taking over for 2010 season
S1ap talked about this race in his series about Mark Martin. He talked about how excited he was when Mark Martin passed Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle on the last lap to take the win, losing it in front of his family
I was there. When we were walking to the lot, I was listening to MRN on my scanner. A guy walked up to me and asked me which one won. I told him Mark Martin won. He said no no, which one made it, Johnson or Biffle. I said neither Mark Martin won. He was pretty bummed that he left early.
I remember this race well, my favorite part of this finish, was the fact that you could hear Johnson’s engine crackle when he ran out coming out of turn 4. 2009 was a fun season to watch in my opinion.
That 2009 Michigan race was jaw-dropping, Johnson and Biffle had really fast cars and both of there cars ran out of fuel and Mark Martin just basically cruised his way to the checker flag. It was a shock in my eyes when I was younger.
When Johnson ran out of fuel it was like; oh sheesh, because Biffle taking the lead it sounded like the usual script that Roush was going to win there again, but then Biffle was slow, and it was like; is he out? Then he just slows and Martin flies by him, I started laughing just because it seemed poetic with the season Martin already had at that point he was just raking wins in.
I was watching this hoping both Darth (Jimmie) and Biffle would run out and Mark would steal one but just knew that was not going to happen, because Mark Martin couldn't buy that kind of luck. Watching him flash by the 16 on the last lap was so satisfying. Probably one of the top-10 moments as a Mark Martin fan.
@@JGR4LIFE20 Which is weird considering how good he was at its sister tracks, Atlanta and Charlotte. Then again, Charlotte was also plaguing Jeff Gordon between 2000 and the 2007 Coca-Cola 600, and there were other races at Charlotte Jeff got snakebit in like the 2009 All-Star Race.
@@thefranchise4698 And some of those times were in really dominant cars, to boot. 2010 for example, Jeff Gordon probably had the best car, and then because of the mix up of position under caution, he got caught up in a big one.
You should do a video on another Michigan International Speedway fuel mileage race that I attended in person & that also had a crazy ending It was in August 2005 At end, a lot of guys were pitting to get splashes of fuel because they were running low, & the winner wound up being Jeremy Mayfield in what would be his last ever career victory
Jimmy is such a kind dude, but winning 5 straight either winning every week of finishing top 3-5, it just felt like a nightmare as you saw the stands slowly get more and more empty, and when he won the worst race in nasvar history the 08 brickyard it was just a slap in the face. And I’m a Hendrick guy but I’ll always say if it weren’t for Jeff having jimmy join in 02, he would’ve had 7-8 cups and easy would’ve been #2 all time winner.
This was one of the most chaotic fuel mileage finishes ever. Two teammates in Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin duking it out for the win. Wild finish. 2009 was the year of Mark Martin’s resurgence with HMS.
Didn’t Jr. break a losing streak at Michigan around this time? Perhaps 2011? I thought that was what this video was about. Good race and win for Martin though.
In a nutshell JOHNSON RUNS OUT OF FUEL!!! White flag the race is official. Can Biffle make it all the way? BIFFLE’S OUT OF FUEL!!!! Does Martin have enough fuel? HE MADE IT AND HE WINS AT MICHIGAN!!!!
What is your favorite fuel mileage NASCAR finish?
This one.
2011 Coke 600 😊
2005 Michigan
2016 Xfinity race at Fontana
Pocono 2015 can also qualify for a race nobody wanted to win

@AnarRamazanov-po5le And the fact that Buckcherry's version of "Born to be Wild" was the theme for that season ONLY.

2009 was the year that got me into NASCAR, and this was one of my favorite races because of the finish
This was the race that got me back into nascar cuz it got recommended to me on RUclips one night last winter and I remembered watching it as a kid lol
Nowadays, I look at Michigan as a sorrowful reminder that its younger brother got axed
As a fan from so cal. We miss my hometrack and need a race back here please. Not the clash
Good grief, I'd forgotten how truly hideous those stupid wings were. So glad they went back to spoilers.

Bill Weber's penultimate race as lead announcer for TNT too.

This was my very first Nascar race and I was 8 years old. This is cool to see.
The race that stuck with me throughout my childhood was the 2012 Michigan August race where Johnson blew an engine.
I will never forget this race, it was the first cup race I attended
Outside of 2014, Jimmie had rotten luck at Michigan
Yeah, you could almost compare Jimmie's relationship with Michigan to Jeff Gordon's relationship with Texas and Kyle Busch's relationship with Kansas.
