The MG3 and its latest version the H&K MG5 come from the MG42, which is the infamous portable machine gun that started it all. This weapon was so well made that to this very day, the modern German Armed forces are still using the basically SAME flippin’ machine gun they used all the way back in World War II.
Its mechanics remain largely unchanged over the past 70 years, which shows how well engineered this weapon system was in the first place; if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The major military powers that aren’t using the MG3 are using weapons that borrow heavily from its design - that's how influential this gun has been.

The MG34 (developed in 1931) was the weapon that influenced the German doctrine of machine gun usage, not the MG42.
In 1942, when the MG42 went into service, the Germans had already been using their tactics for 3 year.

Not the MG3 is the latest weapon derived from the MG42, but the CETME Ameli, a Spanish machine gun chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO.

German military serviceman here. I did my time in the infantry as an "MG2" - nickname for the one carrying the ammo for the one who has the fun. Some points from my perspective:
-we had several MG42s in use. The 42 was just crossed out and the 3 was written on it, so durable is this thing
-we were told "the MG3 is 70% of our fighting power in the squad, so whatever you do don't brake it. You can die, no problem, we have 11 others for you but no second MG."
-we all (yes every 12 man in the squad) were trained to shoot precisely with it. Short bursts of just 3 bullets. The good ones of us managed even singleshots
-the MG5 is slightly heavier than the MG3 (so why even change)
-you can shoot it standing from the hip
-the carrying strap is awful (I think it's still the same as used with the MG42) we all wished a new one but it was good enough to shoot without a second lost on patrol walking
-the main job of the MG is to suppress enemy movement and get control over the battlefield, killing soft targets is the secondary goal. I can't see how you will keep doing that with a thing that doesn't shoot faster than your assault rifle or even IS an assault rifle (looking at you, USMC)...
Thats the thing, changing from the MG3 to a new MG comes hand in hand with a change of the doctrine. Because everybody seems to say "it's using too much ammo, that's not up to date anymore" and they try to change the MG into an DMR or something like that. But all our shooting training with short bursts calls that bullshit and the barrel change is made in no more than 3 seconds from stopping to shoot to start shooting again.

A few things that are off in this video: 1. The MG3's rate of fire is 1200 rpm, not 800. 2. Replacing the MG3 is not going as slow as you suggest here. In many battalions the MG5 has already replaced the MG3 as the heavy infantry weapon and here the MG3 is only being used on vehicles since the MG5 doesn't fit the mounts. The main reason the firing rate is lower on the MG3 is that the MG3 bolt incorporates an anti-bounce spring. This was to avoid out-of-battery explosions. There are also different heavier bolts tha can lower the firing rate. The size of the hole in the recoil-amplifier (muzzle device) also contributes to the firing rate. about the replacment, nor fully correct.
The MG5 has already replaced a lot of squadbased MG3's in the german infantry units.
They will leave the MG3 as mounted weapons on vehicles and in some specific roles like for defens operations.
But overall the MG5 is the better squad based weapon.
It decreases the amount of soldiers, you need to operate it and it's much more effective in modern infantry scenarios.
The main reason to replace the MG3 are the same as with the french FAMAS. It costs to much to maintain this weapon because spareparts are noe longer produced in large numbers.
So you have a lot of fucked up MG3's in actual service.

    • @Bullet_Tooth84

The Problem with the MG5 is, it's not half as robust as the MG3 and you have to bend over it to change the barrel which is a lot easier with the MG3. @@Bullet_Tooth84 the mg5 is lighter and more ergonomic then the mg3. The mg3 was build for a total different warfare and squad. The pure fact, that you can hip fire it, that you only need one soldier to operate it properly and it's way easier to carry it on patrols for example in an afghanistan setting. It's way easier to use it, when you are dismounting from vehicles. The barrle change is not that importantn, when you don't need to replace it so often. The MG3 is a good weapon but it's time as a squad medium machinegun is over. And with the flaws, well no new piece of equipment is perfect from start. And at the end, to maintain the MG3 costs to much money. It's like driving an old car, where every sparepart costs a fortune because nobody produces them anymore.

The MG3s I used in the late '90s in Norway were in the 1200rpm range - (17-22 rounds per second). I can't compare with any other MGs myself, but it is a truly ferocious weapon. Changing the barrel is pretty easy, and this is done in a matter of seconds by the gunner, not the AG.
At the time we had an MG3 attached to each squad. I believe they now use SAWs at the squad level and may have retained the MG3s in a dedicated support squad.

    • @The_Judge300
      @The_Judge300 Год назад

If you used the MG3 with the light bolt, you most likely used the tripod.
If not, someone above you made a mistake.
With the bipod, the heavier bolt should be used, resulting in 800-950 rpm.
The Norwegian forces thought they could manage without the MG3, because they thought the Americans were correct about almost only using the 5.56 cartridge, so they decided to get rid of the MG3 in most cases and totally rely on the FN Minimi 5.56 for infantry use.
They did this because they thought that Russia was friendly and peaceful and that they mainly would fight against terrorists.
They moved all their MG3s over to vehicles and their home defense forces.
They have now realized that this was the wrong approach and that they really need more firepower for their infantry platoons and because of this are they now buying the FN Minimi 7.62 Mk3 that shall be given to all infantry platoons in Norway.
They have a 7.62 support squad in each infantry platoon now, using two FN MAG, but that has been a huge mistake and no one has been satisfied with using that gun for that purpose as it doesn't fit the purpose for quick movements on the battlefield and is even worse than the MG3 for that purpose.
It is as heavy and long as the MG3 and has half the fire rate and it was a huge mistake to choose that gun for that purpose instead of just keeping their MG3s for it instead.
The Norwegian forces wasted lots of money there.
The FN Minimi 7.62 Mk3 is a much better choice and I suspect they will decide to have even more than 2 of them for each infantry platoon in the future.
I suspect they will have minimum 3 for each platoon if not even 4 as that makes much more sense for defense of Norway against Russia or against other countries they will be fighting together with the rest of NATO.

@@The_Judge300 I'm certainly no weapons expert and this was over 20 years ago.
I was in several units in the Norwegian army from '97-'98 and they all had the same setup for the MG3. I was never aware that there was an alternate bolt that could be used - it sounds like the lighter bolt results in a higher rate of fire, and that we were using the light bolt. We always used a bipod. If it sounds like someone above us "made a mistake", probably the whole army in the late '90s was using the MG3 in a way that has since been changed.
One of the many great features of the design which is shown in this video (but not mentioned) is that you can attach the bipod in several places under the barrel shroud, depending how far you want it from the muzzle. The bipod can also be used as a handle (legs folded together) if firing from the hip, not that this was generally encouraged. In the winter we would sometimes tie a snow shoe to the bipod so that it wouldn't sink into the deep snow.
There was a story about one gunner who had gotten so good (during just one year of national service) that he could change the barrel of an MG3 while running between positions.

Maybe the Norwegian army never bought the heavier bolt and maybe the higher ranked officers didn't know the MG3 had two bolt options either.
And maybe the Norwegian army just thought it would be much easier to buy MG3s with light bolts only and just use them for all kinds of purposes.

Fun fact - Sweden has the MG3, courtesy of us buying the Leopard 2 tank. We call it the Ksp 94, from the year it entered service, 1994. It could have entered Swedish service much earlier, in the fifties. We were looking for a new machine gun back then, and ended up with two contenders, the FN MAG and the MG3. The FN MAG won out, just barely, in 1958, and became the Ksp 58. But the MG3 came back, in 1994, as a vehicle mounted gun on our tanks. The FN MAG is also still in service. Two oldies, still going strong!

The US Army did realize this after WW2, and even tried chambering a couple in 30 06, but never had the gumption to just do the real solution, duplicate the design. Instead they kept using that heavy, bulky, and hot .30 cal Browning until it was replaced with the MG42 clone, the M60. Which tried to copy the best features but wound up being even heavier and less reliable. In recognition of that they bought the FN M-240 - which is better than the M60 but still far shy of what the MG42 can accomplish.

I used to be a MG3 gunner. Before the m60e6 took its place. Our vehicles still use the MG3.
I never thought i would miss this gun. Long, "heavy" (compared to modern mg's) and unweildy.
I personally think the weapons greatest weekness is its recoil loaded. Which means if you fire it without mass behind it to take the recoil, it will double feed. That together with the weapons length and weight distribution at the front. Makes it very hard to sustain fire from a kneeling or standing position without jamming.. and the high firerate makes precise fire kneeling and standing impossible unless you find a tree, table, wall.
I recall moving through tall grass being the worst. The high fire rate also ment we carried 750 rounds... vs 500 on the m60. Any way that said... having this on a good position and its a true pleasuere to field and very accurate with the bipod

If you use the heavier bolt to slow down the rate of fire to 800-950, it will not jam when standing or kneeling if you hold it correctly.
I have fired many tens of thousands of rounds with the MG3 in all sorts of positions and never experienced it jamming when using the heavier bolt.
"Precise" fire while kneeling or standing is not that hard either if you make sure to clip the bursts short.

      As I wrote.

The light bolt gives the MG3 a fire rate of 1000-1200 rpm, but the heavy bolt gives that MG3 a fire rate of 800-950 rpm.
Maybe your country or unit didn't have the heavy bolt.
I know some talk about slowing the rpm some by having a bigger hole in the flash hider and booster cone, but I have no idea if that is true and if you might risk getting more jams doing that.
That said, is it still possible to keep good accuracy and avoid jamming when shooting while kneeling or standing with the MG3 if you hold it correctly and manage to clip the bursts short.
2-4 shots in each burst is in my opinion ideal.

In the Danish army we only had one bolt option... I don't remember the exact numbers for the firerate we had, It is 7 years ago i was using the weapon, before it was replaced by the M60e6 in squat use.. But I know it has a higher rate in the armored vehicles, solely from it being fixated more firmly than a human body can xD.
But the 1200 rounds number rings a bell to me. And with those numbers you had really hold it tight at stand firm not to get a failure to extract.. short bursts.
Any way... loved the weapon any way. Had to carry more ammo though. That was the biggest difference going from the Mg3 to the M60e6 - With the Mg3 in reconnaissance role I was carrying 500 rounds standard, and in the infantry it was 500 rounds ready and 250 rounds extra in the bag.
With the M60e6 I would carry 300 rounds in the reconnaissance and 500 as infantry.. which did make it easier to run around... and you couldn't shoot it in a way that it wouldn't function (being gas fed) - I actually think the quality of MG gunners fell when we got that weapon. The MG3 punishes you if your not doing it right.. the M60 doesn't.
but man opening up with the mg3 from a concealed position... I have a fond memory of an exercise in Slovakia where we were doing SoF support and we had both the m60e6 and the mg3 mounted on the vehicle (Mercedes GD) The squat would move down the street in our two GDs with 4 mgs raining hail. 2 mg3 in the passenger seat mount, 2 Mg60e6 over the roof it was awesome. (although i think had it been real conflict, it would have been spicy.. the firepower would probably have suppressed well, but being in a light skinned vehicle it would have meant death if it dint.)
Any way... That went out a tangent.. hope you dont mind x)

M62 aka MG 42. Has been in the service of the Danish army since 1962. Still used on vehicles. When I was an MG shooter for several years in the Army. It eats everything and never stopped. Got on a drill steel wire in the ammunition straps, it went down in shooting pace, but otherwise no problem. When the steel wire was hacked into pieces by the lock. Shot the perfect one again :-)

Dude.. I love the channel, but.. 7,92 (8mm Mauser) is much larger (both diameter and length) and much more powerful than 7,62x51 NATO. It’s essentially a .308 Winchester, which is essentially a .30-06 shortened in length. It’s still a great cartridge, absolutely. But it is certainly weaker than 8mm Mauser (7,92x57mm)

  • @dmnkln
    @dmnkln 2 года назад

The high rate of fire of the 42 was also a bit of a problem: higher spread angle. if the target was small, all the bullets going outside are wasted. So the 3 geared back on rate of fire.

I think a heavy weapons squad existed before the MG42, I'm not saying this particular gun is responsible, but The Chauchat squad consisted of 2 men to later 4 man squad which was made prior to the MG42. The idea of a Machine Gun Corp goes back to ww1 around 1905-1915, where British thought Machine Guns were not appreciated as much so I wouldn't say the MG42 invented a heavy weapons squad, but revolutionized it.

Hi Chris! I'm a former panzergrenadier (mech inf) soldier of the german bundeswehr and I really enjoy watching your vdeos, they have great Information and also great humor! Especially the intro of this video was awesome!
But in this case, some faulty info found a way into this video.
Concerning ammo and rate of fire: the 7.9x57 mauser is by 500 joule and with a bigger bullet way more powerful than the 7.62. Also the rate of fire wasn't lowered that extensively, it stil has 1200rpm. But they built in the so called "nato- bremse" (nato brake), that prevents the rate of fire getting faster than that in long strings of fire as it was the case with the mg42. The mg5 has 800rpm. Maybe you mixed that up.
ConcerningLength: yes, its quite long, but its not longer than a m240 and is only 8" longer than the m249 or the mk48. So "twice as long" is a bit of an exageration;)
Concerning the mg5: its a bit of a clone of the m240 and per se a good machine gun, but has no real advantages over the mg3.
It wold've been cheaper and more effective to upgrade the mg3 (ook up the mg3kws!). Or they could have bought something way better, like a mk48, negev ng-7 or m60e6.
So yeah, this were my corrections;)
Keep going with the good cotent👍

Trench Warfare was because of artillery, not machineguns.
Furthermore, the MG42 is not the first manueverable MG.
Tank division doctrine is what caused the blitzkrieg tactics, not infantry squads.

The MG3 is the standard LMG of the Greek Armed Forces. It is license built by EAS in Greece and it's rate of fire is given as 1150 +-150 rounds per minute. The gun is a bit heavy at 11.5 Kg wit a tripod that weights 11.8 Kg and it is crewed by 3 men. It is a very reliable weapon since the action is completely mechanical, no gas system. Apart from some other minor mistakes, "bringing a boradsword to a knife fight" isn't a disadvantage, quite the contrary. Range is a big advantage with bladed weapons. If you don't believe me, ask the many HEMA related channels on YT or any sword fighting/fencing instructor.
