    There is a way to get very good precision from the controller. No matter how much I played with the sensitivity curves, I wasn't satisfied, it took surgeon-like movements to be smooth. I now run -50% on the thumbstick and trigger curves, in conjunction with an extremity deadzone of 50% on the left thumbstick.
    The outer deadzone doesn't function as you'd expect, usually an outer deadzone of 50% will ignore all thumbs tick movement beyond 50%, that is not the case here. Instead, you're only getting 50% elevator deflection, but it is spread out over the entire thumbsticks range of movement. This was a game changer, as it gave me a lot more precision within the same range and I can't see any reason you'd need more than 50% elevator or aileron deflection, unless you're flying stunt aircraft.
    Works an absolute treat for flying GA. I run reactivity at 5% with a 5% inner deadzone. Triggers are -50% on the curve, same inner deadzone, no outer deadzone and max reactivity.
    One important note, you can get the triggers smooth enough for steering on the ground, but they will never work in the air, not precise enough to keep coordinated. Because of that, it is very important to assign a custom binding to turn on auto-rudder. I bind it to the A button, same as my throttle and I bind the one that turns it on only, not toggle. So the moment I touch my throttle, it is turned on for the remainder of the flight. It resets between flights, hence my binding of it.
    Sorry for the long post, just hope it can help people out. I was a long time flight simmer around 14 years ago or so, with all the gear. I've now returned but on Xbox Series X, don't have a gaming rig anymore. Definitely miss having TrackIR and the ability to easily interact with switches.
    Keep up the great videos.

      Pinned!
      That was excellent advice - thank you very much! I’m sure it will be of use to a lot of people. I too had misunderstood the outer-deadzone function (Asobo should probably re-name that frankly) and assumed it would work like a typical deadzone. I might even try that with my setup, particularly on the rudder (which we all know is overly sensitive). If the results are decent, I might even make a little video on it.
      Glad you’re enjoying the content! Thanks very much once again for the info. All the best! : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations That should work, I haven't added any to my rudder as I don't want to lessen my nose-wheel steering. Just be sure to add a positive extremity dead zone, rather than a negative one. The negative one results in behaviour we'd usually expect from an outer deadzone.
      The only time I've had any trouble being limited to 50% travel is when flying the default A320, but as you've said, her FM is very docile, needing big inputs. I usually fly GA, so not much of an issue. I'll leave the A320 until Xbox gets the FBW mod, if we get it at all.

Y+uparrow = flaps up Y+downarrow = flaps down. Y+leftarrow= spoilers Y+rightarrow gear. I also change my sensitivity curve to ~50% for both elevator and aileron. I have no issue flying anything with these settings and mostly like flying the CJ and Bonanza

    Long time gamepad user, some suggestions:
    - tweak the sensitivity and deadzone settings to get your sweetspot
    - use the Xinput Plus program to further tweak your pad and easily separate your triggers as to get them to work as 2 different axis
    - buy some rubber grips for the sticks for better grip (they are fairly inexpensive and very useful)

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations you were absolutely spot on in covering this issue, I wrote an article about it sometime ago on RaceDepartment discussing the same subject (in that case, for driving simulations). It is pretty important, I believe, to let people understand that the stygma gamepad users suffer is totally unfair, and detrimental to the well-being of the sim community. Nowadays pads have 16-bit resolution, they can be very precise and they are easier to use effectively thanks to improved ergonomics (plus sims themselves offer more settings to tweak them). Yes, sims are meant to be played with proper hardware, but there is people who may be just new to the hobby, do not have the money or space to afford it, have different priorities or maybe even have some form of disability. Why make them feel unwanted and sorry? The sim community should be more welcoming and open, especially about such a subject that is still lagging behind (look at the very first reply I got to my original comment). We share the same hobby and passion, it makes no sense that we split ourselves into useless factions in such way. So, thank you for this video and I hope it’ll help bring a very much needed change!

      I don’t know if my vid will bring any change necessarily, but I totally agree with your sentiment. To my mind, all that matters is that the individual is enjoying themselves (so long as they aren’t disrupting anyone else in the process). Why take up the hobby otherwise?! If people enjoy “casual” simming, then more power to them (and the same goes the other way)! I know what I enjoy, but that doesn’t mean I need to force others to do the same haha.
      The elitist attitude that simulation brings out in some is quite baffling; as you say, we all enjoy the same (niche) hobby, we should be supporting one another and building a community as much as we can. That was one of my big goals in setting up the channel.
      You’ll always get a few bad characters in any walk of life, but the vast majority of people I’ve come across on the channel so far, have been nothing but friendly, interested and helpful : )

    I fly mostly GA aircraft and use a controller almost exclusively for the moment, as my current desk isn't large enough to use a HOTAS without crashing my stick into my monitor. I found that once I got used to it, I can control the plane pretty well. I keep the flaps on LB and RB and use Y+up and Y+down for the trim.
    Rudders are tricky, but I very much prefer the triggers to a twist stick. I use an XBox Elite Controller and I've been able to learn the touch pretty well. It may not be a true replacement for a set of rudder pedals, but it does get much better once you get used to it!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations

      Indeed Keith. Whilst I wouldn’t wish to do away with my current setup (we’re actually doing a bit of space reallocation at home at the moment and it’s the one thing, I have resolutely told my wife, will not be going! Haha), a controller can be a very reasonable option. As I mentioned during the video, I used one for many years and like most of these things 1) you get used to it 2) you won’t miss something you’ve never had (if one is new to flight simulation).
      Like you, I found the rudder to be the trickiest bit with a controller, but I’m sure I could adjust to it given time (and the rudder is a bit fiddly in the sim currently, no matter the setup).
      Cheers, all the best! : )

    @Gassit 3 года назад +2

    I think the issue with the rudder is because its trying to use what is basically two separate axis to simulate what should be a single axis.
    You need to make sure you completely release one trigger before pressing the other or they will cancel each other out.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      You could be entirely correct Fred. I didn’t think I was pressing them at the same time, but it can be very easy to lightly rest your finger on one trigger without even noticing; so it’s quite possible that I was inadvertently. As you say, either way it’s not an optimal solution and rudder control is definitely where the controller falls down a bit

      Yeah, it’s well worth a try! Freeware, so no harm in checking it out. It’s not perfect, but it’s already very impressive what the team have achieved! As you say, the sim isn’t even supposed to support rotorcraft yet, but I’d say it’s as good (if not better) than FSX helicopters already.
      I’m afraid I neither own nor have I tried the Carenado 182. As much as I would love a C182 in the sim, any addon that comes with the default G1000 is a bit of a non-starter for me.
      1) I’m not a big glass cockpit fan generally
      2) The default G1000 isn’t very well modelled. So putting it in a payware aircraft is a poor choice in my opinion (and a bit lazy - Carenado used to have their own custom G1000 in FSX / P3D for example).
      So unfortunately I can’t give you any feedback on it really. From what I’ve seen, I would say it’s probably not really worth the money, but also not a “bad” product. I nearly picked it up in the Christmas sale myself. I think at half-price it’s probably a reasonable purchase.

    How many of us actually use any stick or yoke with default settings? 1/10 of your test should have been default, then customize until ‘you’ are happy. No matter the sim, unless you have a few thousand dollars, you’ll never get to feel the controls. Working on some VFR is a bit tricky with any setup but it is possible and helpful, but obviously IFR is defiantly something anyone will find very useful. And this is very possible with a controller. Customizing sensitivity curves and adding actually useful controls makes a game pad one of my favorite. Also you can easily add a wireless keyboard to supplement your needs on console. Especially for start up and so on.
    Microsoft will have the controls figured out for the Xbox release. And using keyboard and mouse to supplement other games has been possible for years. I think it would be better for everyone to promote and really try hard to see what a game pad can actually to. If only to get the stick and yoke price gouging to level off as quickly as possible.
    In my experience of getting every form of controls to work in sims the high end game pads have been one of the most fun things to use. And most people buying MSFS2020 is really in it for the fun right now. A month after release we’ll see a flood of thrustmaster HOTAS Ones (whatever the name is) being resold as people go back to wireless controls. I don’t know how I feel about that, hopefully if the xbox experience isn’t good enough they’ll try PC.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      Hi Adrian,
      Yes, you’re probably right - I didn’t really consider things from that point of view at the time. I went with the “plug and play” approach, as I wanted to get the default experience, but as you say, I’m sure most will ultimately adjust sensitivity settings etc themselves. I set out to illustrate that a gamepad was an acceptable method of controlling aircraft in the sim and I think on that front the video does what it’s supposed to (though again in hindsight, it could have been optimised).
      Personally I would still prefer a cheap joystick over a game pad, but to each there own. I’ve had a lot of comments from people stating that they prefer the controller option for convenience, comfort, cost etc - very understandable. I agree that if one wants to go down the controller route, a mouse and keyboard would be highly beneficial (a necessity really for the more complex aircraft).
      I hope that Microsoft / Asobo do indeed tweak the controls before releasing the Xbox version. Overall it was more than manageable, but the rudder control left a lot to be desired. Given that we’ve still seen no improvements to rudder sensitivity in the sim (not just on gamepad, but generally) after almost a year now, I’d say there’s no guarantee that they will.
      I’m sure a large majority of people coming into the sim on the console, will be looking to simply have a bit of fun. The gamepad would be the obvious choice for that of course (and frankly, being able to relax in the sofa and cruise around, sounds very appealing to me too!). It will be interesting to see how many people have a fleeting interest and how many take up the hobby long-term. I suspect more will stick with it than one might expect. Quite a few were predicting a deluge of cheap PC peripherals by now, as people got bored with the sim. That doesn’t seem to have materialised yet. . .
      Anyway, thank you for your input. All the best!

I recorded this before the console version of the sim even existed; it stands to reason that Asobo might have adjusted the control sensitivities ahead on the sim coming to the Xbox. If I recall correctly, the default control profile didn’t used to have any sensitivity curves, whereas now it does, so that would probably account for the difference.
      Enjoy the sim! Happy flying and all the best : )

    Like with any other controller option: as long as you're comfortable using it, go for it.
    I'm a gamepad user as well. While I do have a decent yoke and stick, grabbing a gamepad is just nice to get in a quick flight. I've used gamepads since the days of the NES, so I'm perfectly fine controlling everything with one. Heck, I used to fly on a laptop with one of those small track nubbins. I can fly anyhthing with my gamepad just fine. If you practice long enough you can probably land an A320 with a Dance Dance Revolution mat...

      Hi John,
      If memory serves me correctly, ailerons are on the left joystick. Full left should just be flicking the joystick over to the left; if it's not registering in FS Academy, my guess would be that perhaps you have a control calibration issue. Have you adjusted your control sensitivities at all etc (a deadzone for example, might stop FS Academy from registering the input). Otherwise I'm not too sure what might be causing the issue I'm afraid.
      I hope that put you on the right track! All the best : )

    I use a gamepad simply because it's a lot less faffing around than swapping out multiple peripherals (not to mention finding a place to store them when not in use). There is no reason you cant use Track IR and the game pad and like any peripheral dialling in your key mappings and sensitivity is everything, it took me some time to map things to a useable state and I'm still having to mess around with deadzones and sensitivity tuning. The rudder is a hot mess unless you change it to Axis, and evben then it's still fairly useless. Also in settings, auto rudder on the ground is your friend. The default settings for a gamepad are terrible but with a bit of work it can be made eminently useable. Never going to replace hundreds of pounds worth of peripherals, but I also don't have store them and faff about whenever i change from a stick to a yoke. Casual simmer and proud of it lol

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      So very true. It’s a right pain having to swap peripherals in and out, especially if you’re lazy like me haha. I often find myself flying with sub-optimal controllers, just to avoid the changeover process. Storage is also a big issue as you say, my study is pretty much at max capacity on the peripherals front (a shame, as I would love to try the Authentikit Spitfire controls).
      Of course one could definitely use a controller + TrackIR. I just wanted to “simulate” what it would be like coming into the hobby fresh and with the most basic of setups. As I mentioned in the vid, I used a controller for about 2 years when starting flight simulation, but controls / sims were generally a bit more simple back then. I was interested to see if it’s still a tenable solution. . .

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      Good question Christian,
      Actually the video was not originally intended to be a demonstration of the Xbox per se, but rather an analysis of how good controllers were for flight simming (as many PC users also make use of them).
      My take on it though: in short, GA aircraft should be no problem (due to their lower number of controls), commercial jets would be very tricky to fly with just a controller though. You can assign whichever control you like to whichever button and key combinations can also be used (so that drastically increases the number of assignments you could theoretically have), but setting autopilot parameters for example - I think would still get tricky and you’d end up with a messy controller setup at any rate.
      I did go away and do some reading though; my understanding is that actually a standard mouse and keyboard does work with the modern Xboxes? If that is correct, controller + mouse and keyboard would definitely be the way to go in my opinion.
      Hope that helps a bit?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations

      Good question,
      They should be identical I believe. I don’t think Microsoft is changing the core of the sim in any way for the Xbox. MSFS is very accessible to newcomers though. There are plenty of “pilot aids” that you can turn on to make things much easier (more Ace-Combat-esque in terms of control style / handling). There are also navigation markers, landing guidance markers etc that you can turn on and ultimately you can even turn crash detection off.
      In short, if you just want to have some fun and enjoy the scenery, the sim is still very accessible. You should be able to jump in with little to no training and still enjoy the open world (and maybe you’ll then chose to pick things up as you go along).

I presume you’ll have quite a lot of your settings turned down, make sure you have AI traffic off as well as that can hurt the FPS quite a bit.

However, whilst this is perfectly adequate for a simple GA aircraft, I don’t think it will really be workable for a complex jet. I think you’d run out of buttons to assign and it would also be fiddly operating the autopilot etc.
      I did some reading recently though, it sounds like a standard keyboard and mouse will actually work with the Xbox. In my opinion, I would say this will be a necessity (especially the mouse) if you want to fly complex jets.

      Thanks, yeah I thought it would be something a little bit different to try. . Ahh, I don’t know about that David. I seem to be in the minority here haha, but I still think MSFS stacks up well as a sim in some respects. It’s more of a “pilots” sim than a “test-pilots” sim if that makes sense. It does a good job of recreating the “feel” of flight when cruising around, it all just falls apart a bit at the edges of the envelope. This can of course still be worked on though and indeed I hope it will! It suits me down to the ground, as I like just cruising around, but of course it’s not much use for those who enjoy their “dynamic” flying. Wouldn’t be much good for evading SAMs in your F18 for example hehe. All of this only applies to the GA stuff though, for jets, it’s still generally a bit rubbish at the moment.
      Haha, exactly. The same is still true of the Boeing’s though. Rotate, count to about 5 and then pop the autopilot in ha. A controller really isn’t going to hold you back much on that front. Might make the landings a bit trickier, but you can always autoland (although you’d be taking your life into your own hands attempting that in MSFS currently!).
      Cheers David, hope you enjoy the MB339 and your joystick! ; )

    Leisure Gamer: Please: (i) what are the Buttons to the left and right of Power Button for, (ii) How do I get Active Pause ✈

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Год назад

      Hi Adebowale,
      From what I can see online, the left button is internal / external view toggle and the right button is the toggle pause button. I don’t know whether or not “toggle pause” is the same as active pause but if not, you will simply need to assign a button on your controller to the active pause function (should you wish to make use of it).
      I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )

    One alternate controller idea I'm curious about: I've heard it suggested that some people have used a USB volume knob as a trim wheel.... how well does that actually work?

      It’s not something I know a whole lot about I’m afraid; but it seems as though the first “HOTAS” for the Xbox is due out around mid-October:

    Yea, I quite like use a xbox controller, but it's because here, in Brazil, a full setup for flight sim. is around 3000BRL, not worth it.

      Sadly equipment is pretty pricey wherever you are these days. As with most things, the Xbox controller has its advantages and disadvantages. It’s certainly very convenient in many ways and is great for more “relaxed” sessions. Cost effective as well of course.
      Cheers Matheus! : )

    Using a mouse is not what is going to be happening when users play the game on Xbox. I came here to see how the game plays using a controller and controller only, not a bloody PC mouse

    • @bloodstockvip2176
      @bloodstockvip2176 3 года назад +1

      You can use mouse on xbox etc... but there is a flight controller (well 3 dedicated ones) coming to xbox?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      That might be what you came here to see Mark, but that isn’t what the video was all about I’m afraid (nor does it claim to be). Actually this video (which is a few months old) was looking to see how viable using an Xbox controller is, in place of more typical flight sim peripherals (for which the prices are inflated currently and a lot of hardware can be hard to come by).
      Overall I would say for a GA aircraft it can do the job. For the heavy jets etc though, the number of buttons available vs the number of control assignments you’re going to need, will become an issue. Particularly for operating systems like the autopilot. As Bloodstock states, I believe you can use a standard mouse and keyboard on a modern Xbox and I would suggest that this will be well worth having and practically a necessity (especially the mouse) if you plan on flying any complex / jet aircraft.
      Cheers

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад +1

      That was my understanding and I certainly think it would be hugely beneficial tool to have, when simming on the Xbox! Cheers Bloodstock : )

    This is what I realy want to do and not spend a load of money on a new PC how bout getting an Xbox and connecting a yoke and rudder peddles and Throttle and Deluxe Flight Sim version

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад +3

      Yeah, the Xbox version should certainly be a more economical way of getting into the sim for a lot of people. I don’t own an Xbox personally, but apparently they will be creating some sort of option where a lot of existing PC hardware can be adapted to work with the Xbox. So potentially the Xbox version could offer a very valid simming option.

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад +1

      Ah, well I’m sorry you feel like you didn’t come away with much. . . In fairness though, the video doesn’t claim to be a tutorial. As per the title / description; I simply wanted to test how suitable an Xbox controller was for controlling an aircraft in the sim (as peripherals are very pricey these days and can be hard to get hold of).
      All the best.
