What would you do when you think no one is watching? What Would You Do? (WWYD?) explores the varying answers with the help of hidden cameras capturing individuals who have been placed within seemingly everyday situation that quickly go ary. The individuals on this hidden camera show are forced to make tough calls when directly faced with situations of racism, violence, hate crimes, and other hot button cultural issues. Catch John Quinones reporting on these individuals as they make split-second decisions to intervene or mind their own business. WWYD? airs Friday nights at 9|8c on ABC.
What Would You Do? (WWYD) is a hidden camera show, hosted by ABC News correspondent John Quinones, in which unknowing bystanders are placed in uncomfortable, and often compromising real world scenarios in public. WWYD’s hidden cameras focus on the average person’s responses and reactions to these issues of social responsibility. Topics such as gay couples being affectionate in public, date rape, racism and racial profiling, interracial couples, abusive parents, drunk driving, and harassment of the homeless are touched upon in this series. What will you do? Would you choose to intervene in these situations? Watch and join the discussion.

Lol! I can imagine that call! Operator: "911, what is your emergency?" Caller: "I'm at (insert name and address of restaurant), and someone is wearing anti-Trump clothing." Operator: "Is the person causing trouble?" Caller: "No, he's just ordering food. I just don't want him to be here, because I disagree with his political views." Operator: "Don't call this number again, unless it's an emergency. Or, you will get fined or arrested. Calls like yours are a waste of time, because someone else could be in real danger. " Operator hangs up. Or, the operator could just hang up. I don't like Trump either, but there's no need to make a big stink if you disagree with another person. Everyone has the right to express themselves, as long as they're not doing anything wrong. If the guy was attacking Trump supporters or something like that, then it would be appropriate to call the police. Also, if people are saying hateful comments about anyone it's ok to stand up against them. But, he was innocent. So, he has the right to eat there.

Hmm, Obama was called a "traitor", accused (based on flimsy evidence) of not being a citizen, rumors spread that he was a Muslim (which is basically anti-Muslim bigotry), and people were ready to start a civil war over Obamacare.

Pretzel Muncher Doesn't need a reason. People like him believe property trumps all other rights (pun not intended). For balance, people like me believe he has certain rights over the management of his business, yes, but his business is also a component of the public square, a very old concept that (ironically) conservatives have worked very hard to shred. As he is providing a good/service people need (food) and more to the point, a good that they cannot get elsewhere but through engaging with the private sector (because of our very weak welfare state), I believe he has an obligation not to discriminate in an *unreasonable* manner, as that puts targeted individuals and groups in real danger of material deprivation. And particularly vulnerable are not just members of marginalized groups, but even marginalized *individuals*, especially in small communities where people can be very catty and insular.
Sometimes these free-market types will claim in response to this that "competition will kick in and businesses that discriminate will naturally be out-competed by those who don't", but the history of Jim Crow laws in the late 19th and early 20th centuries shows that that's not necessarily true. Those laws were immensely popular among business owners and whites more generally in the South. Whether the capitalist class was willing to sacrifice profits in the service of white supremacy, or they concluded rationally that this was the best way to stay in business, is irrelevant - they wanted these laws in place, that much is clear, and were willing to pressure the state (the law enforcement arm of capital) to enforce segregation. We live in a very different time than back then, but I am not convinced enough people's attitudes have changed all that much, or equally everywhere. Weighed against these costs, I don't see much of a benefit to allowing business owners to refuse service on the basis of something like race, and I'm too much of an ethical consequentialist to lean on "but it's the principle of the matter!"
As for political messages, it sort of varies to be honest. I can't countenance denying a business owner the right to kick a group of people wearing swastikas or KKK patches out of their establishment. I think other customers would be justified in feeling physically threatened. But an "impeach 45"-or a "MAGA" hat for that matter, as much as I dislike Trump-are not swastikas or KKK patches. If it makes you uncomfortable or afraid to see either, you need to take a fucking Xanax. I am surrounded by Republicans every day and I'm used to seeing their silly little hats. And I'm someone with an actual anxiety disorder. If I can can deal with it, you can deal with it.

Protip: the majority of US states have something called Freedom of Association which allows people and organizations to refuse interactions with persons they do not want to associate. It is an incredibly valuable freedom. The manager has every right to request someone vacate the property and to call the police should they refuse. Use your freedom to combat those businesses if you want by boycotting or peacefully protesting.
Think about it this way. You’re the restaurant owner. A man walks in with a shirt on that offends you. Doesn’t matter what it says, it could be a naked lady. Who knows. Either way, he has a right to where it, just not in your place of business.

Absolutely, of course. part of politics is advancing your power base while undermining your opponents base of power. Privately, we admit this -publicly we deny this truth.
I would have told the guy in either instance that it's the business' right not to serve you, but I'd also make it totally clear that I disagree with the business' decision to refuse service based on such an absurd premise. As if a hat or t-shirt is "hate speech" or disrespectful. Please. And in either instance, I'd likely get up and walk out, too.

In that baker's case, he was willing to sell them a bland cake and gave that couple referrals to other bakers. That willingness to help malgré the situation showed the judge that he went out of his way to still help that gay couple which meant that hateful discrimination was not the cause of not serving them, but rather religious belief made him not serve them.
