  • In this session Dr. Derek Thomas explores a timeless tale of faith's triumph in The Pilgrim’s Progress, based on his teaching series by the same name. Written by John Bunyan over 300 years ago, The Pilgrim's Progress one of the most widely-circulated books ever to be published in the English language. In spite of its popularity in the past, many people today are not familiar with this masterpiece. Christians have as much to gain from this book today as they did hundreds of years ago.

Ive listened to pilgrims progress about 12 or 13 times, i plan on hearing it hundreds.
Im glad to hear other people talk about it because i first heard ut about 18 months ago.
I love the strory. Im 48 yrs old and have studied a massive amount of biblical literature mostly theology.
I decided to hear it and was flabbergasted at the sheer volume of scripture used in the book. Almost every character and every line has some scripture being used in the story.
Its helped me thru some dark times and to reconcile other dark times of the past.
Its helped me to realize that the narrow way is difficult but the Lord of the celestial city is merciful. He knows as James said "we all stumble in many ways", He knows and He sends us help so we can reach the joy of our Lord at the end of our journey.

Dr Derek Thomas mentioned that he did not know a more gripping realistic battle being depicted in english literature then the one with Appolyon and Christian. Well, he obviously only read classic english literature. ;-) Just give the good man the book "Druss, the legend" or one of the Horus Heresy 40k books and he will have to think twice about that. 😀
Man I do love Pilgrims Progress and enjoy listening to Dr. Thomas, but sometimes I have to smile a little.

Arwen is one of the main fictional characters in the Lord of the Rings trilogy written by J.R.R. Tolkien. She is the daughter of Elrond, the eldest of the elves. In The Lord of the Rings she marries a man, the King of Gondor, Aragorn, despite knowing that she is immortal. Wikipedia source resources.

They need to implement such laws in the US to imprison and deter these false teachers of prosperity and self appointed apostles.

Not good or not clear. It’s very misleading for him, to say that, saints have to persevere till the end because if you are truly regenerate, the Lord Himself will keep you till the end. It is the Lord Himself “who will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom...” 2 Tim 4:18. It is the charismatics who teach that the saints will have to persevere till the end or else they will not be saved.

Why? Does not the Scripture say just that?

God will preserve the saints but that doesn't mean the saints don't have to persevere.

@@Cadence733 I greatly respect JB. In fact we use his family worship bible guide at home. But with all due respect, JB did not come out of a charismatic church. I did. The works with which they encourage us to persevere, isn’t death to self-rule. They aren’t Puritans like John Owen or Thomas Watson (Doctrine of Repentance).
It is being as active as possible in church & community & striving greatly in prayers for signs and wonders.

      @@Jebact Exactly.
wem uk, please read all of 2Tim 4 . Verse 5 Timothy enthuses the saints to, "endure afflictions. Verse 7 I have fought the good fight. As Jebact says, we have to persevere.
And, Matthew 10:22," and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved."
      God Bless
