Finally, a Reactor has done a John Martyn song ! He was a remarkable singer/songwriter, very popular in his day, an accomplished guitarist, an innovator, a bit of a naughty boy capable of singing his simple love songs with amazing passion. Well worth exploring further.

Holy shit - you reacted to John Martyn - he is from my hometown in Scotland & I've listened to him my whole life - a wonderful guitarist and singer with chilled and beautiful music......

Wow, I remember hearing this in the late 70’s. Sounds just as good as it did then.
Thanks for requesting this one Steve and thanks for playing it Angela.

RIP John. In the 80s my ex wife and I travelled around the UK and saw him at every gig on his tour. He is the soundtrack to my life… love him.
‘May You Never’ is mine and my daughter’s special song.

Always a pleasure to see someone react to John Martyn, a unique artist who rarely seems to crop on the radar. He was a complicated man, capable of being extremely sensitive, as well as being brutal and surly in person. A truly idiosyncratic singer, songwriter and guitarist. And this is one of his loveliest songs, a real trippy vibe.

Yes!!! John Martin put out some awesome tracks… bravo for this request. Some great artists are obscure.. and John Martin is one of them. Fans of the band America should note that “Head and Heart” from America’s Homecoming album is a John Martin song… take a listen to J Martyn’s version sometime! One of the few covers recorded by America. Great reaction, Angela.

Yes! John Martyn, one of our most gifted musicians. Saw him live a number of times and each experience left me breathless. One World, Solid Air, Grace and Danger, Sunday's Child, The Apprentice, the list of classic albums is (almost) endless.

@@darktake1234 Yep. A few that as far as I can see have never been reacted to: Spencer The Rover, One World, Sweet Little Mystery, Baby Please Come Home, and Hurt In Your Heart.

New song and new artist to me! It's a pretty intriguing and mystical tune! It gives me that Beatnik, Hippy, Jazzy, Bluzie vibe!

Solid Air is a solid album. However, much as I hate it when people tamper with albums that shouldn’t be tampered with, I have swapped-out the album version of “I’d Rather be the Devil” for a live version of the same song. That’s a purely personal preference, not something I’m telling anybody else to do.

He and Phil Collins became good friends before his passing and collaborated on John's Ways to Cry. Pretty sure it's on Phil's Plays Well With Others, a 4 disc CD that focuses on all the artists he's played with. Outside of Genesis

Great reaction and song. Hi Angela-DayOne, on girls night I'd really like to see The GodMother of Rock&Roll. Way back B 4 R&R in 1940's and50's she was the girl who inspired Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Elvis Costello, etc... She was a gospel singer, brilliant guitarist named Sister Rosetta Tharp any song from "The Best of Vol. 1. She'll put a smile on your face!!!

John used to use his voice to sound like a tenor saxophone giving it a slurring soft sound. If you imagine the song being played with a sax you might see that.

One of the most engaging and beautiful male voices to come out of Britain. A sadly overlooked artist by the public, but great artists Phil Collins, Eric Clapton and Sade loved and were inspired by him. He had his early acoustic albums with the great double bassist Danny Thompson and his electric albums were often collaborations with Phil Collins. He even sang a great jazz standard on the closing credits of the film"The Talented Mr Ripley" He has so much more to check out. And thankyou for the review.

One of my favourite songwriters - with a voice comparable with whale song - and ultimately addicted to his vices. But so powerful and ahead of the curve in his day that I still feel we're catching up.

John wrote many absolutely beautiful songs and was a master of the guitar with his own unique style. Listen to Solid Air. A song he wrote about Nick Drake. Someone else you should listen to. Best wishes.

I'm going to make a request. Please go back to one more Billy Joel song. 'Scenes from an Italian Restaurant'. Billy Joel is a storyteller with a variety of styles. You have spent some time with storytellers, one of them being Janice Ian. The Billy Joel song I am requesting tells the same story as Janice Ian's 'At Seventeen', but from a different perspective. Thank you for letting me make the request.

Incredibly well known to his large contingent of British fans (who could fill major venues). John refused to ‘play the game’ with record companies, after a relationship with Island Records, eventually releasing albums himself. That meant he got little international promotion and never broke into the States, which never seemed to bother him. He had collaborations with major artists (eg., Phil Collins, David Gilmour, The Band’s Levon Helm and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry) and some of his tracks appeared on film soundtracks, but to many he is ‘obscure’. They don’t know what they’re missing.

It is a great song but the melody is very repetitive. It’s basically the same short melody over and over and it’s a pretty short song. I’ve noticed that a lot of John Martyn songs are like that
