My mama use to wear this one OUT when I was a little girl. We didn't get along that well, but I have to give it to her because she gave me a PRICELESS education in jazz. And when I went off to Howard University in 1975 as a student in their affluent music program at the time, this girl was ready as far as jazz was concerned. Peace mom.
I know all about not getting along with parents. And about finding out later there were things you're glad they passed on to you. A *mom that's crazy about Cannonball* - that makes me *smile* ;-) I first heard this wonder of a tune on a radioparadise (dot) com (they're not paying me, I'm paying them, commercial free listener supported, and I'm using this space to shamelessly advertise for them because they're doing a fantastic job of diversified great music...)
Bless you! What a touching tribute to your mother. The USA gave the world the BEST music which we call JAZZ and comes from the BLACKS in America. TREMENDOUS. I would love to see a black film maker do a documentary or movie on JAZZ so the real story can be told!
Such a great tune! Deserves to be in the "standards" repertoire. Melody, harmony, harmonic rhythm, dynamics, soul... it has it all!!! The genius of Josef Zawinul!!!!!
There's a strong possibility that I'll watch this video every day just to keep my head straight. This is one indestructable groove, presented here direct from the Mother Ship. Wonderful Zawinul was Austrian, and had a grandmother who was syndi -- a gypsy, which is a fabulous tradition to bring to the American Blues, played by the best.
I would like to give my blessings to the pianist & his writing this song 🎵 & the beauty of him playing the piano 🎹 as I listen to him play the piano I was lost in his melody 🎶 I want everyone to know I love 💘his song 🎵 & may God bless him always & I would like to hear more on utube channel if they don't mind me saying so (from bronx NY city R.W)🍸
I first heard this song (this live version) when I was about eighteen, a couple decades later and I'm still in love. It's the greatest music ever. Send this into space! xoxo
This song is so great. The intro when he says ''when adversity comes your way sometimes people call to short'' Lately adversit is coming my way but i'm so motivated to not become the few people that call to short. When i hear this song i yust chill for a few minutes and go back to work with a smile on my face!! Great piece of music!! wonderfull
Playing this song in our school, Rondebosch Boys' High School's(South Africa) jazz band. It's such a vibe, but we play it a bit quicker though. An awesome song! Love it
I was a senior in HS when this record was out. Back then, radio played everything, rock & roll, jazz, soul, whatever. This song hit #11 on the charts. Seven months later, the Buckinghams hit #7 with a vocal version. You had Sinatra and Dean Martin both knocking the Beatles out of the #1 spot at various times. Nowadays, radio is so fragmented in their formats.
Heard Cannonball and Nat Adderley with Zawinul at Cornell College in Iowa in the early 1970s. Went to a master class as well as the public concert. I remember them making a big pitch to get into the real jazz tradition, not just pop stuff like Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears. I was already persuaded. Tremendous privilege to hear the music and wisdom of these great musicians in person.
Got introduced to this great tune by the CMCC Warriors Drum and Bugle Corps from the Bronx in the late 70's at Randall's island in New York City, I loved hearing them play it at their rehearsals. Brings back good memories.....I ended up buying the album just because of that....funny how we learn to love good music and where influences can come from
I read a lot of comments from young music lovers...RUclips takes me way back when I first saw a lot of these musicians play in person...From the mid 50's to the late 70's a lot of great musicians emerged..some may be still around.. however I would like to thank you tube for their vast variety of music from the past.. its keeps the kids away from Grandpa's big black cd collection
You Had to be there to get the full feel of the Original Cannonball Adderley. Mercy,Mercy,Mercy! Thank God Those days are behind us!♥ God Bless Cannonball Adderley and Thanks for tha Memories!
Young Art student in Bay Area first heard this at a friends on Broadway in Oakland on a rainy night with some of the artists favorites Red Mountain. I felt amerced in a new time with depth and vitality and I never left. Never will. Now I am the player and the vitality
Nice video, just right for my 1960s Black Aesthetic class. One of those songs that evokes just about every aspect of life: childhood, spirit, passion, history... Classic!
I have this on vinyl, "Cannonball Adderly Quintet Live at Operation Breadbasket" Recorded live in Detriot as a fundraiser and kind of tribute to Jesse Jackson. Great album! See if you can find Zawinuls "Country Preacher" also from the same.
i've been in a jazz band for the last 5 years (since i was 14) and a blues band for 4 years. the heart and soul that goes into blues and jazz makes it far exceed any of the crap being put out on the radio these days. if only more people could see that....
I got to see the great Joe Zawinul with his band at the Detroit Jazz Festival a year or two before he died. The biggest venue at the fest -- the amphitheater stage at Hart Plaza -- was packed, and Joe and his band had the place rocking. It was a memorable experience.
I'm only 20. and I religiously go to my nearby jazz joint. and this is BY FAR my favorite song! I love how the band Tony around the world plays it! AMAZING!! WOO!!
Really glad Joe Zawinul aquired recognition with his "birdland" piece on Weather Report. This guy has performed with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. He deserved the praise and accolades.
Beautiful music. I personally remember it when the Buckinghams did it with lyrics in the 1960's. Cannonball Adderley Quintet did win a Grammy for this in 1968's...talented men.
ohh just brilliant!!! i got this LP record for two bucks!!!! in a garage sale i also found a lot of other jazz jewles, this was in a small northern mexican city, grandpa in that family had a great taste n music...
3-6-2016 Love it. Thanks for posting and for pictures. Another great place to pick up a ringtone. This was a refreshing slice of peaceful beauty amidst the harder and more acidic tunes (which i also liked) of the mid/late 60's. The recording I owned of this tune had the lyric: "My baby, she's made out of love, Like one of those bunnies at the playboy club" (---an unnecessary "bunny trail") Julien Edwin "Cannonball" Adderly. His brother Nat ("Work Song", lyrics by Oscar Brown) played Cornet with this quintet. Julien died in '75, too young at age 46. Nat died in 2000 at age 68. Sweet music.
This song takes me back to very early childhood. My parents and their fam/friends would be around the diningroom table drinking, talking ish and playing jazz...especially this song. Now I'm very grown and think about how I miss them and cry mercy, mercy, mercy in my head.
I played this song for my alto saxophone concert. I played with my saxophone teacher which was on tenor saxophone. We kicked ass and everybody was dancing to the beat. This song is great!
Whew! THE most soulful groove ever laid down in jazz music - bar none! God bless you, Joe, for giving the world this gift! R.I.P.! This makes me chair dance so hard! This one fills me with joy and reminds me how happy I am to be alive!! (Ignore the misidentification - Eric Marienthal has nothing to do with this!) Happy listening!
Thanks for this video. If young people would listen and learn about the dedication of these musicians, they may learn what real music is, thanks! Keep it up, Henry
Being 1 of 7, my mother entertained us with music. This album, JUG (Gene Ammons) and Keely Smith were played very often, and to this very day, are as fresh to me as ever... over 50 years later. I have the original vinyl (and also CDs). My brother Klaus (of Seattle fame) is one of the best sax players I've ever heard.... no doubt inspired by Cannonball and Gene... Another great song from this particular album is "This Here"... a Bobby Timmons composition...def. worth listening to...still a fan...
On this day in 1967 {March 4th} 'Cannonball' Adderley performed "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"* on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... At the time the song was in it's second of two weeks at #11 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, that was also it's peak position on the chart, plus it spent eleven weeks on the Top 100... The following week it peaked at #3 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart... Besides "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy", the Florida native had four other Top 100 records, "African Waltz" {#41 in 1961}, "The Jive Samba" {#66 in 1963}, "Why? (Am I Treated So Bad)" {#73 in 1967}, and "Country Preacher" {#86 in 1970}... Julian Edwin 'Cannonball' Adderley passed away at the young age of 46 on August 8th, 1975 {cerebral hemorrhage}... May he R.I.P. *Three other versions of "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" also charted in 1967; the Buckinghams {#5}, Marlena Shaw {#58}, and Larry Williams & Johnny Watson {#96}...

I have a brother of distinct taste when it comes to music - just any kind of music. I found this one in his record collection and loved it straight from the start. An amazing recording, sooooo cool. But honestly, it wouldn't be half as cool without the audience.
One of the best spoken intros to any song ever! Then, what a performance! And the tone of the electric piano beats anything I can get now. A Wurlitzer, I believe. A gorgeous phrase at 2.14. As for sung versions, I heartily recommend Larry Williams and Johhny Watson. Thanks Joe - RIP mah man!
I got a lot of Blue Eyed Soul in my record collection..especially the big brass band sounds from the 70's Such as Chase.. Blood sweat and tears, Tower of power... I could go on... My Grandson has a band and they are starting to get pretty good gigs playing our old music I hope this spells the end of RAP
Sold out to The Man, and easy electronic production for non-musicians. There's still great music being made, though. Check out the live stuff by Tedeschi Trucks Band, and the Studio Jams RUclips channel. There are two versions of this tune there.
I want this played at my funeral. No kidding. The advice at the beginning may provide some comfort to my family, and the rest can be background music for a slide show of old pictures.
WOW - this is a BLAST from my past and I am thrilled to hear Cannonball Adderley again - what an absolute treat. Thanks for posting - just love the music and the quintet as well. Really really brings me back to my wonderful youth.
Love Cannonball's intro, and the tune is just so silky smooth. Folks that don't like this don't know what they're missing.

I meant every word of it because the whole band is really the best in the world 🌎.
I first heard this song (this live version) when I was about eighteen, a couple decades later and I'm still in love. It's the greatest music ever. Send this into space! xoxo
I lived this cool, hip music as a young man. My fuel of life!
Carl A im just getting into it. What are your recommendations?
noisy crowds usually annoy me, and I don't know why but I really love those loud enthusiasts you can hear here!
The ironic part is, this was recorded in a studio. The extras were encouraged to do that to make it FEEL like a live recording.
This is what happen when you FEEL the MUSIC as in LORD HAVE MERCY 🆗 ✌ and I'm out. 😎
Can't picture listening to Mercy, Mercy, Mercy without the crowd chatter. It's engrained in the recording & my brain...
When things get too bad, I put this on and it comforts me. Thank you for the gift of mercy
My High School's Jazz Band played this song, and it was amazing! I love this song so much!
this is my FAVORITE song! it's like a voice from a higher calling giving us some relief in our lives! bringing us back to normal!
Mercy, mercy, what a song, what a quintet!
This group turned me onto Jazz as a elementary school kid. Could not get enough of them.

I love the opening introduction about adversity.
For a moment I thought we were going on a spiritual journey.......Wait!! That IS what we did, wasn't it?
One of the best five minutes a person could ever want to listen to

This song will always be at the top of my music.i have to check in with this song at least 3 times a month.april2019
One of the first Jazz albums I ever bought, back in '66. Still, priceless!
I’ve listening ever since I first heard this masterpiece of sound. I will forever listen to it until I die!
Love Cannon and Zawinul. Cannon had the prolific technique and a lot of soul. Zawinul was an innovator and visionary.
Joe Zawinul would go on to join the jazz-fusion group Weather Report.

For several years, “MERCY MERCY MERCY” has been my “official” Presidential Song folks.
Peace.

Do the 142 people who gave this song a thumbs down really do need to be shown Mercy, Mercy, Mercy?
Heard for the first time in Wolf of wall street.. replaying over n over again
Magical! Rest in Perfect Peace, Joe Zawinul!
I love this song and my school marching band use to play this, we would and still get happy when we play this just for fun !

I was grooving to this when i was kid. My friends were into the beach boys and beatles. I was listening to my parents music. So much truth and soul.
i found this one in my dad's collection and fell in love with it instantly .
perfectly balanced ! so timeless that it makes one feel young again !
How the hell could someone gives this a thumbs down? There must have been too much funk and soul for them to handle.
Bloody wonderful. One of my favourite jazz/blues toons.
We all need Mercy Mercy Mercy in this crazy world :)))
What a performance! Nicely done slideshow, too.
I love this song it takes me back to get times and friends such a wonderful tune.
Love this.....One of the First tracks that I heard and fell in love with Cannonball!
you're younger than me and I'm proud of you! I'm only 20, and jazz is the most beautiful creation of man!
I discovered this track beeing 10 yrs old or so and was just hypnotized...
Haven't been listening to this for some years though....
...simply the best! One of my favorites style of music!
I got a lot of Blue Eyed Soul in my record collection..especially the big brass band sounds from the 70's Such as Chase.. Blood sweat and tears, Tower of power... I could go on... It's been awhile since I've heard this song...forgot how much I enjoyed it !!!!!
Thanks for posting.
Mercy!!!!!!
What a wonderfully balanced song.
Dude. The feel on this. Love it.
This Is What Gospel Sounds Like In A Jazz Forum.
I actually had an arrangement of this song back in high school pep band (up tempo for that purpose), and I love this song at any speed.
Here is the proof that Jazz music doesn't need to be complicated to be awesome! I suck on bass but it's a pleasure to play this tune, easy and great!
