As someone who took delivery of a 458 less than 2 weeks ago as of typing this, of course the title of your video caught my eye. I completely agree with your comparison to the 430 Scuderia. I was originally shopping for a 430 Scuderia, but with the recent price trend of them as well as the potential cost for maintenance is why I went with the 458 and I have to say I couldn't be happier with it so far. As for whether or not the 458 itself is overrated? I have to disagree, I think it has been put on a very high pedestal and from that perspective could be considered overrated, but it has been rightfully put on that pedestal due to how great it truly is, and the 458 will only continue to age gracefully.

The 348 is always the most engaging to drive - wonderful if you can take the top off too - but your exhausted after an hour or so. The 550 just makes you feel special, takes everything in its stride, cruising but also rewarding if you want to press on. But for me, the 458 is not for that short blast, but really comes in to its own on a longer (B road) journey and you can really get in to a rhythm. Having had a few Ferraris I have to respectfully disagree.
Some of the points you make (lack of reward for hitting 9k rpm, exhaust bark - although this is easily fixed with a £250 aftermarket controller) I agree with, but perhaps I’m a bit older and can remember how much of a spaceship this was when it landed in 2009. The same cannot be said about the 355, 360, or 430.
When the 355 was released, Porsche had the 993 Turbo, a car that would monster it in every dimension bar noise, similarly the 360 which the 996 Turbo would demolish without a second thought. 430 - 997. However with the 458 it took Porsche a full 4 years to even come close, and for sheer driving pleasure the McLaren was miles behind. The 650 again came a full 4 years later.
To criticise the 458 for those issues compared to cars that took years of development just to be comparable is a bit unfair.
Also two things make it near perfect - make it a Spider (solves the in cabin noise issue) and buy a IPE exhaust- makes even the 355 sound a bit tame!

Spaceship vs purity and timelessness. Isn't Lamborghini the place of spaceships? 🤔 The 458 is the first Ferrari that put refinement before raw, visceral pleasure. Totally disagree that 458 is overrated. I think no one is qualified to make such remarks about 458 ( or any other car for that matter) without actually owning it, living with it and driving it over a period of time. And, having the privilege/opportunity of owning multiple super cars from various manufacturers at the same time, to be able to compare them with the 458 Italia. There is no other Ferrari out there which ticks the boxes which the 458 does:
1- Last Pininfarina Designed V8 Ferrari. Regarded by most Ferraristas as one of the best looking modern Ferrari to date.
2- Last Naturally Aspirated V8 by Ferrari, revving up to 9000 rmp.
    3- Cult Following globally
    4- V8 Sound
5- Build quality far better than any previous Ferrari. Period.
6- More drivable than ANY previous Ferrari . Period.
7- Excellent Factory warranty and 7 year free service plan. Better than anything Ferrari had offered for previous models
8- F1 Technology etc etc etc.
If Ferrari 458 Italia is not a better car in every single aspect, than any of its predecessor than is it the 488 GTB? or F8 Tributo? I know what most of my car friends think about the turbo charged Ferraris based upon the 458 Platform...

The car was wonderful, but just never missed it once gone. Actually to me the most disappointing element was the flat plane engine sound. It’s was just a noise that got louder the higher you revved the engine. No depth or changes to it and certainly not a patch on earlier V8 Ferraris (the engine itself was wonderful in operation though). The inability to drive the car on a constant throttle at motorway speeds drove me nuts I.e. it was always either on or off the throttle. This was only ever fixed with the 488 onwards… Personally wouldn’t have another one and the game has moved on somewhat since. Always think the comments and support of this car was a bit ‘Emperors New Clothes’ - being blasphemy to criticise the greatest ever sounding V8. Na, not for me; if you really what the greatest engine, then buy yourself a pre GPF 812SF…. Mines not going anywhere soon (god willing)…. Edited to add, I’d definitely have another 488 over a 458; that’s was a car I still miss and wish I hadn’t sold.

"Lacking what I'm looking for"... you're an automotive journalist, you're jaded, you'll always have something to complain about whether you care to admit it or not. Complaining about a car that most everyone loves creates controversy and therefore increases views and subscriptions. Well done. The 458 is a sexy and exhilarating package on 4 wheels with its share of quirks, some of which can be taken care of with aftermarket mods. The 650S is just another quiet, boring, and unreliable McLaren that's great at going very fast for a highly depreciated price (before factoring in the required extended warranty). It will never be the last naturally aspirated mid-engined V8 supercar that revs to 9000 RPM. Maybe in a couple of years when you do yet another 458 review, you'll come to understand why they're still so loved.

Some friends pointed to the Scud and within the first mile I knew it was the car for me.

I got to drive the 458 for many laps around Dunsfold where I was encouraged to drive it quite hard, at the time I thought it was the best car I had ever driven, which it was in all fairness.
We purchased a 12c as the 458 was out of our budget(I still think they command a price way way more than they are worth), after driving the 12c I personally think it smashes the 458 in every department, it has a much more luxurious interior, it’s considerably quicker, it’s more comfortable to drive, has good storage(similar to the 458) and it’s never going to beat the 12c on a track.
I do think the 458 sounds good though and I also think it’s a very good looking car from the outside.
If they were available for say 50k less than what they are fetching now, then I think they would be an excellent choice or worth looking at, but as you do rightly say there are much better cars out there for the money, the 650 being one but also I would also say the 12c and by a good stretch too.

The McLaren 650S was launched in 2014 when Ferrari were about to launch the 458 Speciale. The standard 458 Italia wipes the floor with a 12C and gives the 650S a good run for its money.

Not just in looks, but because real manual transmission cars were still far more common and not outright unavailable. A big part of what made these types of cars so cool and exclusive to me back in the day was that it took more than just money to own and drive one. You had to know how to drive. I remember being a kid and hoping that I'd do well at learning to operate a manual transmission so that I could one day drive my dream cars. The fact that that is gone forever makes these things entirely uninteresting to me, outside of some video entertainment, for which I thank you JayEmm!

Fascinating how much age plays a role in our perception of cars. I’ve never driven one of these so can’t speak to that but for me this isn’t only my favorite Ferrari, it’s THE platonic ideal of a Ferrari maybe even of a super car. I much prefer the looks of the 458 to any of the successors. The 488 does nothing for me, not sure if it’s the side scoops or that vertical piece on the front lip, but it just doesn’t look as clean as the 458.

Coming up soon, Does the 458 Spyder fix all my issues with the 458?

No, it just adds weight, rattles, and chassis flex🤦🏻‍♂️

@@jameswillard1 It's not a Maserati GranTourismo, at any speed not going to jail immediately you wouldn't notice any scuttle shake. Is your butt dyno so finely tuned you can notice a 2% increase in weight with 570 horsepower on tap? What better way to enjoy the sound of a Ferrari than not to engulfed in a cage, but hear it al fresco.

This was the Ferrari that changed 911s seriousness when it comes to Porsche. I'd take a Porsche GT3 over this

Hmm not sure I agree sorry. Been in a few 458,s and spoke to lots of owners. I know a 488 owner who sold it and got a 458 because he preferred it. Great cars. They sound epic under acceleration. Handle brilliant.

After having a coupe and now a spider, I have to say if anything it's underrated and people don't realise how bloody amazing this car is. Perfect mixture of modernity with some old school naturally aspirated heaven thrown into the mix.
