The paneling in the Grand Salon is beautiful. To clean the paneling in a chateau I have been working on, I did a three-step process. First, I vacuumed the walls with a shop vac to remove as much dust as possible and cobwebs. That was followed by cleaning the wood with murphy's oil soap and water. After completely drying (at least two days), I used an un-tinted liquid wax that dries to a flat finish then buffed it. As an architect and historic preservationist I was very happy with the result. Cheers-

Thanks for the tips! I wasn't sure if we should use oil or wax, but the wax seems like a better choice. I usually use Liberon, do you have a brand you like?

I cleaned the wood paneling in my villa using Murphy's Oil soap and water. Then I applied a tinted Brie paste wax with a buffer attachment on a power drill. It looks glorious. Do NOT use oil. Dust will stick to it and it will quickly become a disaster to clean and remove.
Also, I would like to suggest you try using a paint sprayer to apply your primer and paint,,, ESPECIALLY on your shutters. You should sand down the areas and fill in any holes or uneven surfaces. I use the Kilz brand of primer.
The PREPARATION of the area is the key part of any project. It takes a little practice but you will get the hang of it.
Do your shutter project first,,, then you will have enough experience to do the interior ceilings, walls, and woodwork. Just tape off the woodwork walls, or floors with plastic sheeting and you will see how fantastic the end result is.
TRUST ME,,, You have so much restoration to do,,, a sprayer will save you hours and hours of backbreaking labor.
My tip is to buy GOOD QUALITY paint to cover the surfaces to last for a long time.
I look forward to seeing the progress on your chateau. I have a 22 room 18th century villa on the Isle of Capri that has taken over 6 years to restore.
You are fortunate to have access to all the antiques and brocantes. I have to import almost everything from France, Spain, or England.
Try attending estate auctions when you can. Before you go be sure to make a list of rug, chandelier, and furniture sizes so you can make wise decisions.
You both seem like lovely people and I hope to meet you some day. God bless you all!

Recognize that this video is a year old but for my cedar trees, I got a long “drip” hose that was permanently placed along the fence where the trees were. It was easy just to turn it on and off and not have to move heavy hose. As well, there is expandable hose. When it fills up, it stretches out and when you turn off the water and when you close the nozzle, the hose shrinks down to nothing and is extremely light weight. How lucky to have peaches growing up a wall! Magic!

It’s great to see a pair of Americans bringing this old home back to life again. A few years ago my husband and I sold everything we owned, and moved into a derelict stone schoolhouse in rural northwestern ireland. From a lifetime in NYC to a soggy field in the middle of nowhere - in one smooth step. (We were both in our 60’s - and bought the schoolhouse online without ever having seen it “in person”)
I think you guys are great and have a wonderful attitude to the work, and to the changes that come with moving to another country.
You were wondering about what the pattern on your salon ceiling is called.
Ribbon and Stave - as it is known in the picture frame industry. A form of ornament which has adorned carved and gilded frames since the mid 1700’s.

I would relocate all Hydrangea's across the gravel, where the lawn starts, or at least 6 metres from the house. This enables you to look at them from the inside but also when you sit outside with your back to the chateau. They are easy to multiply so make the whole front a stunning blue hydrangea border

You are my soul sister watering with heavy hoses. We're on a well fed by a wonderful aquifer system supported by lakes and a 30 mile Creek that meanders the countryside. We're on part savannah and woodland, zone 5 USA) and have no irrigation system so I have to lug 150-200 feet of hose around the property to water veggie & berry gardens and newly planted trees. I finally got rid of the heavy plastic hoses and went to the fabric ones. They are so much easier to use! I can't believe I spent 3 years breaking my back with the heavy ones. I haven't been especially gentle as they get pulled & dragged over rocks, stumps and around bushes. Good luck. With climate change we will all be doing more watering. For new trees and plants I'm looking for drought tolerant everything at this point.

The Grand Salon is so light considering the wood all over the walls. Normally I don't like heavily paneled walls in wood, but I could see why that room really caught your eye. The light really makes the difference. Under any other circumstances, I would paint it all white, but I can see that it will look absolutely stunning oiled up! We have long hot summers down here in Australia and often long periods during both the summer and the year without rain. The most popular way to water our gardens here is to set up some kind of drip system. Where you bury the pipes under the surface of the dirt and allow the water to leach into the ground right at the roots of the plants, where they need it. If you also have wood chips etc on top, this also helps the drip system. This way you might only need one or two connection points to connect your hose to your tap, as the hose is going to snake its way all over the garden.

In the US we have what we call drip hoses. They have small pin prick size holes all over the hose. The hose is very light weight and inexpensive. I lay them along the roots of all the plants through the the garden. I have a smaller garden about half the size of yours then I hook up the end to the water source and run it for a couple of hours each day when it is dry. You could set up multiple locations with multiple hoses from the well if that works better for you but you would not have to install water sources through the garden by digging trenches. The light weight drip hoses work well with the well pump as a water source.

Stunning. Thank you so much for sharing the before/work-in-progress shots. You really have made a good choice. I have been shopping for chateau (from Australia) for about a year now and the desirable elements you have all in one property are: considerable zoned-off outbuildings, walled potage (with handy gardener's grotto) tree-lined alley, well-lit rooms, wood panelling, internal shutters, French doors (as well as the windows), the quad openings in the petite salon ( reduces diagonal traffic and problems with furniture placement). You get some of these things in some chateau, but not all. The video was well edited. The skit getting the shutters off in the hydrangea was a LOL moment -nicely done (the "Goodies" inspired?). Please keep going with the videos ... I think you are about to crack it and find a considerable audience. I wouldn't mind betting you do a great job with your chef skills with those veggies too. Hydrangeas can be severely pruned, but most macrophylla bloom on the previous year's growth. So you need to consider that when determining how much to take off. If you take them way down, you won't have blooms next year.
I've had good luck transplanting Hydrangeas, so if the location isn't ideal, just move them. Fall is best for transplanting and pruning. They'll spring back to life next season... sans flower blossoms.
I've grown many different varieties in my Minneapolis yards. Yours are a pretty blue, perhaps Nikko. Your soil is must likely acidic. Rhododendrons love acid soil and they seem to grow wild everywhere in France.
The Endless Summer series of Hydrangea has several macrophylla that do bloom on new wood and are more diminutive in nature making annual pruning less necessary. They also have a longer blooming season. Check them out.
My home in TX was built in 1965 and doesn't seem to have ever had irrigation. I loathe dragging hoses all around the yard. Wouldn't it be lovely to set it and go?
I think those are acanthus leaves depicted in the ceiling plaster.
Internal shutters are wonderful. The wood paneled room will be lovely with a little work.
I'm sure many of your viewers have made reference to Stephanie from Chateau Diary and her work in progress (15+ yrs.). She would be great to network with. She just celebrated 200K subscribers. It's been a scorcher this year. Be sure to periodically check the replenish rate on your well to ensure you don't drain it. Depending on the construction, materials, and condition of the well, taking the water level too low could cause damage or collapse the well.
The walled garden is a thing of beauty. A seriously gorgeous garden meant to feed an army. Indeed the installation of pipes, spigots, shakers hoses and such is ideal and would save a lot of time and effort. Particularly when you set up automatic watering with the soaker hoses. All in good time.. For now enjoy the water. It's therapeutic by forcing you to slow down for the hour or so required to water.
As usual my comments and suggestions are meant for all readers based on the subject matter of the video; not necessarily directed at Amanda and Lincoln.
    Cheers!

Thanks so much for sharing! I can see that it takes a lot of work just doing the filming. I love the walled garden. I finally insisted that we add chicken wire at the lower portion of the goat wire around our garden to keep out rabbits, turtles, and small pests. Until then I would go out to find practically all my green beans, tomatoes, just about anything would be eaten. Then I keep anything else like squirrels, etc taken care of with my rifle. Sounds horrible but when you work so hard and put money into making a garden you certainly don't want it destroyed. Your donkeys, dogs, and cats are adorable. Janice from Arkansas USA

The internal decorative features of your Chateau are absolutely gorgeous. You really have a gem. Your chard is looking good, love the square of sunflowers and I am so jealous of your peaches ! They look amazing. I have two young peach trees but I think they just have peach tree leaf curl ! No fruit. We are in a red zone and we have no grass left ( except in the veg beds !) just dry dusty earth. We water the veg garden by hand with cans. It takes about 20 cans of water ( being frugal) we have a lot of rainwater tanks that will soon run out again. Our well water is 15 m down and a long way from the veg garden but I think we will have to work something out. As you say, everythings a work in progress. Even with all your bits and bobs in the grand salon the room just looks so beautiful.

Thanks Jenni :) Gosh, this drought is so awful! My trees had leaf curl too. I sprayed with an anti fungal in the fall and seemed to do the trick. Best of luck with the watering!

I LOVE IT! Oh wait, I need to see the shutter's new color before exclaiming that, but certain to as we seem to share a similar aesthetic. I have to say for a moment I thought the hydrangeas might win the battle and swallow you whole! Le Petit Salon - cannot wait to see this transformation, it has so many beautiful features. Glad to see the green of the guest room has gone (yes, I know some people liked it) and know that your new palette will be serene and elegant. As you say, all is a process and your irrigation system will come - in the meantime wheeling that gynormous hose about will entertain Waffles and Enzo (it was wonderful to see 3 of the furries). A bientot!

The bats probably aren't flying in your open windows. They usually enter the house at the highest point (the roof) and then follow wind streams when they get confused. It's usually the young bats wandering around this way.
