    My absolute favorite Greek dishes are
    - Greek green beans in tomato sauce
    - Shrimp saganaki with feta
    - Stuffed Eggplant papoutsakia with beef
    - Lemoned fried cod with patato-garlic purée
    - Cabbage rolls with rice, minced lamp and egg-lemon sauce
    Out of street food it's the one and only Spanakopita with feta cheese

    In Athens they only make custard bougatsa but in Northern Greece we also make it with cheese or ground beef, believe it or not. Athenians can't have this and they tend to make fun of us with jokes like: What do Thessalonikians call a birthday cake? -Bougatsa with candle (because we supposedly put everything in the bougatsa)

    Moussaka has actually no cheese, potatoes and eggplants are mostly used but versions including zucchini are also seen, it is like a very very rich casserole with a bechamel layer on top. Spices on the mainland like Athens vary to the Greek islands (cumin, cinnamon may be also used).

    Moussaka is usually made with beef. I've personally never eaten lamb moussaka. Souvlaki is also either pork or chicken. We don't really eat that much lamb in Greece 😅 It's a traditional Easter thing not much of a street food. Nice presentation overall 👍

      Lamb isn't a street food as such but there's grilled lamb chops and lamb on a spit year round in Vari, south of Athens. Was a popular place to go when I was younger but I haven't been there in ages. Not sure it's still as popular as it used to be. As for moussaka, whatever tradition may dictate, I make mine with lamb, which in my humble opinion takes moussaka "to another level." :)

    I am not Greek but I love visiting Athens. My favourite Greek food is spanakopita which is usually eaten at breakfast but it can be enjoyed at any other time of the day as well. I like moussaka too, but I prefer it with beef than lamb. Some places do a vegetarian version too which is good because I try and avoid red meat if I can. I don't particularly like sweets but I do like loukoumades. I went to the place you recommended but the only issue is that you have to order one serving which has too many pieces. Unless you are in a group, 10 pieces is too many to finish even if you like eating it. I managed to find another place called Tzatzos in Koukaki where I usually order two pieces at a time.

    • @aWanderlustForLife

      It really was so many pieces! Even when we went to Kalamata, it was 10 pieces. But we split between 3 people, so it was okay. And if you're wondering, I was the one who took the 4th one 😈

    I love souvlaki!! Especially the pork ones. 😍 I think gyros are the ones that are shaved off of a vertical rotating spit - similar to shawarma or doner kebap. The words gyro, shawarma and doner actually all come from “to turn/rotate”. I just realized I didn’t have any gyros on this trip, I was really focused in on souvlaki! 😂

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  Год назад +1

      I thought that, as well! The restaurant we went to in Athens called these gyros, too. It was Souvlaki when not in pita and then gyro when they were. Since we went to Kalamata after, I only saw these as Souvlaki. Maybe it's different in different parts? Now, I'm curious!

    • @panoC97
      @panoC97 Год назад +3

      @@aWanderlustForLife Gyros is indeed the shaved meat. But in Athens (and southern Greece in general) the skewer with the meat is called 'kalamaki' and the whole pita wrap we call it 'souvlaki'. So, in Athens, you might hear for example ''a souvlaki with pork gyro'', which might confuse some people but it just means a pita with gyro in it.

    • @antimimoniakos
      @antimimoniakos Год назад

      @@aWanderlustForLife In Athens they call souvlaki the wrapped pita and kalamaki the souvlaki. So they eat souvlaki with gyros or kalamaki etc. Though they are half of Greece's population they are totally wrong.

    The Culinary Letdown: A Californian Quest for Gourmet in Greece:
    When our food-obsessed group, proudly wearing our Californian foodie badges, decided to embark on a culinary journey to Athens, our spirits were as high as the ancient Acropolis. The land that gifted the world democracy surely had a plethora of flavors awaiting us. Instead, we were met with a flavor plateau that left us yearning for more.
    The perpetual offering of souvlakis with unapologetically stale bread became a predictable fixture of our Athenian dining experience. The red and green bell peppers dolmas, while vibrant on the plate, echoed a monotonous tone on our palates. We couldn't help but wonder: Where was the fresh baked bread warm from the hearth? Or the comforting embrace of a hot soup or the gentle warmth of a well-brewed tea? Aspects that should have been staples in such a storied land.
    Ironically, back in the Golden State, our local Whole Foods flaunts an olive bar that is reminiscent of a mini Mediterranean festival. Yet, in Athens, supermarkets seemed to treat olives with casual indifference, limiting their variety and essence.
    Having explored more than 80 establishments across mainland Greece and its islands, our enthusiasm began to wane. We found ourselves booking a hasty weekend retreat to the gastronomic haven of Antalya, Turkey. And what a relief that was! Turkey, with its rich culinary canvas, proved to be a stark contrast. The food was not just food - it was art, it was a story, it was, dare we say, seductive

    It's great that you love Greek food! but you also do what many vloggers do, eat exactly the very same things. Which is an utter shame. To me atleast. Not for your viewers. Your viewers will love it. But what your viewers don't know is that Greek cuisine consists of many thousands of dishes. WHAAAT??? many thousands? But, but how come am I eating Tzaziki, and Pita gyros, and Moussaka? Because you fall into extreme stereotypes and love to not spend a small second of just investigating endless other dishes.
    Yes. Tzaziki is amazing. Yes Pita Gyros is amazing. And definitely you should try all of that. But Greek cuisine is truly incredible if you just understand HOW much there is. Greek cuisine is literally over 20 regional cuisines. And just the Politiki Kouzina alone consists of thousands of dishes. Let alone adding all of the other ones on top of that. The sky is the limit.
    You could for example try any of these dishes:
    Pastitio, Giouvetsi ( Yiouvetsi), Stifado, Shrimp Saganaki, Fava or Fava Santorini's, Gemista, Kalamaria tiganita, Domatokeftedes, Makaronia me Kima, Kolokithoketfedes, Pita gyros, Moussaka, Bougatsa, Keftedakia, Soutsoukakia, Tiropita,
    Spanakopita, Kotopita, Hortopita, Dakos, Fakes, Pantzarosalata, Taramasalata, Melizanosalata, tsoureki, Milfey, Ekmek Kataifi, Feta Saganaki, tirokafteri, Shrimp Saganaki (Garides Saganaki), Galaktoboureko, Paidakia, Arni sto fourno, Kokkinisto,
    Bamies, Biftekia, Apaki, Fasolakia, Spanakorizo, Kleftiko, Portokalopita, Kokoretsi, Briam, Skordalia, Milopita, Youvarlakia, Loukoumades, Koulourakia, Ravani, Tzaziki, Kalitsounia, endless salads, Souvlaki, Diples, Galatopita, Staka me avga,
    Loukaniko, Koulouri Thessalonikis, Kreatopita, Fasolada, Chtapodi sti Schara, Ladenia, Revithia, Risogalo, Karydopita, Baklava, Strapatsada, Alevropita, kolokithakia tigania, Astakamakaronada, Garidomakaronada, Pasteli, Fanouropita, Lagana,
    Kotosoupa, Hungiar Beyendi, Tzaziki, Fylla, Amygdalota, Prasoriso, Dolmadakia me kreas, Dolmadakia Yialanzi, Yiaourti me meli, Kolokythoanthoi (filled courgette flowers), Gigantes plaki, Pilafi, Sardelles and Marides tiganites, Kakavia,
    Moustokouroura, avgolemono soup, Trahana soup, Bouyiourdi, Lahanodolmades, revithokeftedes, melizano keftedes, Eggplant Papoutsakia, Halva, Florines, Prasopita, Peinirli, Revithosoupa, Horta, Kouneli stifado, Karkaletso, Tsiladia, Akanes,
    Melomakarona, Kourabiedes, Kariokes, Kaimaki ice, Galatopita, Bakaliaros, Savoro, Kolokithokeftedes, Boureki, Imam baildi, Lahanosalata, Kazandibi, Tash Kebab, Kebab Yiaourtlou
    And so on and so on and so on. What you do with it is up to you. You can eat 10x more pita's before you go back from holyday and you experience will be truly wonderful. But if you truly get to it you will be mind blown by the endless other dishes.

      I whole-heartedly agree! And I mentioned it at the end of the video 😉. The problem is limited time, money, and understanding. Videos like this are only supposed to be a taste. I wasn't in Greece nearly long enough to really get into the regional foods. Though, I'm kind of obsessed with the country, now! We went to the Peloponesse region after this and had even more food! It won't all make it on RUclips because we were doing other amazing things. But I do want to start having locals on to explain things better and to find the good stuff!
