- Ben Miller sing's Randall Munroe's "Every Major's Terrible" from the webcomic xkcd!
THE COMIC: xkcd.com/1052/
I did pretty good on my memorization, but there's a one word difference, who can spot it?
That was great! You should major in theatre....oh wait.
+Drew Ellisor
How 'bout liberal Arts xD
Now that you mention it, "music" wasn't on the list!
@@DieFlabbergast Thats because music is the best!
@@DieFlabbergastClearly, that’s because music is his real major.
After all this years I still can't get over "as Pratchett said 'geography's just physics slowed with trees ontop'" XD
The thing is, I can't actually find a source crediting that line to him that predates the comic... so I'm not actually sure he said such a thing, at least not in so many words.
@@andrew_ray it's paraphrased from the book "feet of clay". On page 6 (in my version) it says "But geography is only physics slowed down and with a few trees stuck on it"
@@saschaberg8406 legend, nice
Though physics seems to promise you a Richard Feynman-like career...
...the wiki page for "physics major" redirects to "engineer"!
Someday I'll be the first to get a Ph. D in 'Undeclared'.
Yes people, this is a reference.
5 years. So hows the masters in Undeclared going?
The Alt Text is my favourite part of xkcd
So uhh... Ever get that Ph. D?
As a Philosophy major - "Philosophy is just math sans rigor, sense and practicality' is pretty spot on.
As a math major, the lack of reality with math is also pretty spot on.
And thus, Gilbert & Sullivan's legacy continues, their original parody once again further parodied with surprising originality.
Their legacy lives on.
Forever, or so it would seem. ^___^
Can't escape it if you try. 😉
Just kidding. I actually don't even *want* to escape. ^___^
Totally willing captive audience here. ^____^
wait what did they parody? i thought they're the source!
Are you serious? The xkcd comic was a parody of the "Major-General's Song", from the Gilbert and Sullivan musical "The Pirates of Penzance".
@@Nyerguds thats what i know. but i dont know what the major-general is a parody of. or did is misunderstand your "further"?
@@p0gr Ohh. They were parodying the general state of affairs, of military leaders who were well-educated but knew nothing of actual battle and tactics, of course.
I love that you can tell it is recorded in a practice room.
I can’t believe this is just a cover-this dude might as well have written the song with how genuinely he performs it!
Such kind words! This tune has had many parody words over the years
I have three cousins who are all graduating from high school this year. I am memorizing this song now to sing at their graduation party. I will, of course, sing it much more slowly than this for two reasons:
1. The attendees will not have a transcript to read as I sing, and I want them to be able to understand all of the words.
2. I want to avoid slip-ups, and slower is easier.
How’d it go?
@@javasiege It went well! People enjoyed it.
@@agiar2000 Good to know!
The word you switched was in the line "Though physics seems to promise you a Richard Feynman-like career," you changed "promise" to "offers."
-dead from laughing-
the aggressive eye contact is the best part
This reminds me uncannily of Tom Lehrer... and not just because of his elements song, the sense of humor is similar as well.
Silavite It wasn't written by him
TomasPabon It just makes him think of him because of a song he wrote on based on the same music called “The elements song by tom lehrer” back in the 1980s
The humor here is definitely reminiscent of his. When I saw the video title here I instantly thought of his song "Don't Major in Physics"!
@@graphgiraffe It's safe to say that Randall Munroe is familiar with Tom Lehrer's works (besides obviously the elements song).
@@TomasPabon and they never said it was.
For some reason, and I'm not sure if it's the way he looks or what, but he reminds me of MatPat from GameTheory.
MatPat actually majored in drama, if I recall correctly
@@TheEnderLeader1 If you scroll down far enough on his channel you can see his video auditions. I'm telling you, I didn't understand what it meant to laugh and swoon at the same time before I watched those
This deserves a round of applause.
...I may have just clapped a few times before I realised I was alone in my apartment.
RUclips is like that. 😉
It does weird things to you sometimes. 😉😜😘😉
*Slow Clap*
*Stands*
*Faster Clap*
Encore! Encore!
+Shruk father no!!!
Jeremy Seinfeld it's ogre now
Do it one more time and this time can you do it really fast
When clicking this video I wondered "When might he mention philos--never mind." Worlds first and objectively fastest answer to a philosophical question.
"TV's behind the rush into forensic criminology" DUN DA DUN DUN -Dragnet reference!
Just the comment I scrolled down here hoping to find!
That hair. That talent.
I like how the title of the video has the right amount of syllables to be a line in the song
That's because it *is* a line in the song.
@@julistarling8382...No it isn't? He does not say 'Every major's terrible memorized and self-accompanied' at any point.
Now: I was like, wrong. It'd be a real stretch to make it actually fit the meter. But it's definitely not already in there.
@@flame_warpAnd the title of the song is in the song, but isn't long enough to be a line, making it even more nonsensical to say
it rhymes with the description too
"Every Major's Terrible" memorized and self-accompanied!
Ben Miller sings a song from the webcomic xkcd!
Terry Pratchett reference = insta-like.
Pro tip: dont try to sing along while eating nachos
+Bartolome Gutierritos I should have known better...
I was soooo hopeful someone would do this as soon as I saw the comic on XKCD. I applaud you good sir :D
You know it's awesome when at the end you clap even though they can't hear you.
Considering that I had seven majors in college (some were duplicate) and now I work in VFX, it's soooo true! Well done!!!
Fantastic performance. Great variation in the accompaniment. I'm impressed.
Notice that he never says anything against engineering. Instead, he promotes it!
"The wiki page for physics major redirects to engineer."
My major is chemical engineering. :)
+Flameheart Kindle it's pretty much saying engineering is not as cool as physics but physicists have to settle for engineering jobs.
+George Cain Notice that he is probably a music major. Because it is best major.
Errr... "engineer" in this context means "computer engineer"
Civil engineering major here! :)
it's always good to laugh at your own major once in a while!
WHY IS THIS MAN SO AMAZING
OH GOD THIS IS FLAWLESS
i need to decide what university i will go to and this..... this speaks to me man
After 11 years, congrats on 1k subs!! You deserve it and I frequently find myself returning to this banger.
I'm undecided, and I have no idea what to pick. Trying to balance what's useful, what I like, and where my strengths are.
what did you end up doing? 11 years later
My education: enrolled - Physics; dropped to - General Studies; switched to - Business; refined to - Accounting; added - Management Information Systems;
My career: graduated - bingo hall floor attendant (fired for incompetence); hired - associate economist (laid off due economic downturn); temp work while unemployed - waiter, hazardous waste handler, envelope stuffer; hired - tech support (fired for incompetence); current - software developer (performance review: satisfactory! :D )
Knowing there its people out there doing this kind of things makes my day
Excellent!
First.
1:02 "The wiki page for 'physics major' redirects to 'engineer.'" Lol that is exactly what my Dad is.
Impressive... Chaotic to a point, but balanced just enough to be great. More impressive: doing that with minimal glancing at they keys while singing...
Well done.
I’m subbing because of two reasons:
1. The talent.
2. Being the 1000th.
I found the same by having this and the original comic open in tabs, then pausing and switching every other line to check lyrics. Well done!
It's sad that this would be the gold standard for "every major's terrible" IF ONLY the piano wasn't drowning out the voice =(
Who needs majors? Just make enough awesome RUclips videos. :)
And by the by, I absolutely love the Richard Feynman accompaniment.
That was beautiful. You definitely did the comic justice here.
Deserves a much better recording
Jared Wirth I agree. Ben Miller performed it very well, but the sound of his voice should have been amplified while the sound of the piano should have been reduced.
Excellent delivery. Had no idea this song was on the "Tube" until now. Oddly enough I uploaded my version (completely different theme) the other day. Submitted it for your approval as a video response. Keep it going!
Every major's terrible... expect music. Music majors are just awesome. :D
I quite seriously, quite honestly think right now that this is the most expressive example of [self-accompanied] enunciation ever. Well done, sir!
Your talent is amazing on so many levels. This is clever and hilarious. I want to adopt you!
Nice work, Mr. Miller. I really liked the little extra changes you threw into the tune. Well done.
I caught myself clapping when you finished! Great job.
Soooo....foreign language majors are clearly safe and we are very well-prepared for life. Right?
....Right. :'D
Out of all of the covers of this song I have listened to, this is my favorite!!
This was awesome! Excellent! I loved it.
It's been four years since I first saw this, and I still can't even.
Best interpretation from the comic I have seen so far...
So clever and so well played and sung!!! Amazing!!
Aha! Engineering prevails
Unfortunately, I did not record it. However, I recall one of my aunts holding a smartphone up throughout my performance as though she were recording it. Now, if I can just remember or otherwise determine which aunt that was and get the recording from her, then I could certainly do that! I'm going to start trying to find the recording. It might take a while. Feel free to subscribe if you want to see it when I get it. I won't likely post anything else. :)
The automatic captions taught me the word "magnanimous"
This is one of the best things I've seen on RUclips in a long time- you are incredible!
Initialy it wasn't but xkcd readers kept setting it to redirect so it had to be protected for some time (it was referenced in protection notice).
Ben, this is Chris Rogers. Chief, this is EPIC.
I wish words could describe my love for this idea
I want to like this twice.
This. This ranks amongst the best content available on RUclips, no contest!
at last. proof that my underwater basket weaving degree means something!
You are really quite the pianist! I'm very impressed :-)
I'm fairly certain that if Algernon from The Importance of Being Earnest was a real person, he would be this guy.
I'm a simple man. I hear someone quoting Terry Pratchett, I press thumbs up.
You can guess most of them if you pay attention to the phrases that accompany them... the puns and jokes help explain what the more complicated ones are.
Oh my god............this song is even better then I originally thought! It was funny in print but this is awesome!
Best rendition I've seen so far.
I got chills.
Absolutely fantastic.
Oh my gosh! Ben! This is fantastic!
BRILLIANT performance! I'm putting my music comp degree to good use being unemployed :)
And what are you going to *do* with that degree?
Oh, nothing much, why? 😉
Absolutely brilliant
Ooh! You're good at this! I love the emotion you inserted. The original was quite lacking of stress.
You remind me of Hugh Laurie.
So glad RUclips is recommending this to me now as opposed to when I was 18. Guess the masters degree
That's the best thing I've ever seen on RUclips.
Misspelled 'business', but other than that, sheer perfection.
*Time: Last Year
Career/English Teacher: The hell are you doing?
Me: Obviously, I'm singing about college.
This is the best version i've heard. Congrats sir!
Definitely the best so far. Great job! :D
This needs to have more views.
and this is why music majors rock.
that's encouraging for a high school senior...
Fantastic performance, Ben!
Turns out virology will guarantee that *none* of us will ever get a hug again
I've thought back on that line a few times this year, yes.
I start college in fifteen days. I'm a biology and psychology double major. This video both depresses and greatly amuses me.
this is amazing and you deserve all the love
dawww, thanks
I love this!!! Great job!
Oh. My. Holy. Moly. You are amazing.
I love this, good work dude
Beautiful.
I found the word you mentioned in the description! You say, “though physics seems to **offer** you a Richard Feynman-like career”, when the original is, “though physics seems to **promise** you a Richard Feynman-like career”
Dude, you are kind of my hero. Fantastic job!
Auto caps: High taxes any government mandated programming needs unified fatalism you
Woah, youtube's a Libertarian
Bravo!!!
I feel much better about my major now.
that's because it was written to the tune of that song which was written to the tune of the modern major general song from pirates of penzance
What remarkably sleek hair...
It helps to set the playback to 0.75, to better understand the words, which are very clever.
